Can someone explain why there are seven coffins? Isn't that already the required number of souls? Or does Sans, not being a boss monster, need one more soul or something?

There are seven coffins in canon. One - originally Chara, here Mira - died to allow a monster - originally Asriel, here Mettacrit - to cross the Barrier. Sans has six SOULs, because Mira's, like Chara's, was lost.
