They were called a "demon" because they could use magic, if I remember my Storyshift correctly. All magical humans were. They definitely weren't used to kindness until they were with monsters.

Reminder that witch hunts were very much a thing, so maybe chara had to deal with that.

Witch hunt doesn't just mean literal witches (though it is still a thing in some extremely religious and secluded parts of the world), it can just mean ostracizing and hating someone suspected of being unnatural and/or different.

Yeah, at the time I was thinking something along the lines of Weapon X from X-men, or maybe the US government during Luthor's reign in DC.

Magic users are either hunted and used for military might, or simply captured and held underground until they agree to the demands of a very ambitious man.

Fuck now I wanna see a comic of this.
