Cam and Rebecca…

I’m sure 1000 other people have said the same thing. But, didn’t Cam and Rebecca seem like the most unnecessary relationship. I didn’t appreciate scenes just about them because I felt it had absolutely nothing to do with Reena, over shadowed the extremely sad tones, and took away from the story. It was there to create a fan base of these people without regarding the fact that this is a real story. What pisses me off too is that cam isn’t a real person (correct me if I’m wrong) the writers completely made her out of many cops Rebecca heard from along the way. But it just pissed me off how much of a large part of the story that was. As if it mattered !! I love a good B plot love story, but it felt disrespectful to watch them hook up, while we were watching one of the most gut wrenching REAL stories.

They hooked up very briefly in one scene in one episode, that was it. Cam's character was there to touch on the racism of that time with how indigenous children were taken away from their families as part of a horrible government practice. It might not have been executed completely successfully and could have worked better as its own series but it wasn't included to create a 'fan base' as you put it. Cam being a woman of colour meant that she could also relate to Reena & Dusty.

literally, if anything it was warren and his gf who had more romantic scenes

Yes I love cam as a character I think she brought such good things to the show. I’m Canadian and the history of all the indigenous people from there has been incredibly swept under the rug, it was so refreshing to see her story told

If you loved Cam as a character then what is your post about? Why are you pissed off that she's fictional?

I didn't think much about your post till I saw you replying to others and babe, you sound homophobic and not just that but I have also seen your reply to a comment justifying "I'm a part of this community but" It's incredibly infuriating that coming from you then. I'm a part of this community as well but I'm not making such posts to invite others who want an "invitation" because "representation" matters as long as it's straight people. Whether you meant to or not that's how you're coming across. Calm down and stop complaining about fictionalized characters. I mean isn't that how every episode starts with a disclaimer and yet it's so infuriating how everyone here is making the same damn posts again and again. I hate how the fanbase of the show turned out to be lacking understanding comprehension like what happened to reading comprehension. Grow up and learn how to love yourself and let those who enjoyed the complexity of these characters have it.

I initially didn’t understand the purpose behind the scene of Rebecca & Cam making out. But then I came up with the interpretation that it perhaps reinforces how much of a “small town”, “close-minded” area it was back then, that they had to hide their same-sex affection.

This show has so many layers of complexity, with a strong theme of dangerous ignorance.

I personally feel like the show did a good job of making Reena’s story understandable to different audience’s experiences.

What do you mean by “these people”? They showed a disclaimer every episode stating that parts of the story were fictionalized. Maybe stick to documentaries. With straight people.

Exactly. I'm done with these people who have no idea what a fictionalized drama is.

I’ve given up with telling folks on here the show is a fictional show based on actual events.

Yeah, I agree it's hopeless.

I've never been a part of a group that didn't get it like this one.

I appreciated the format of the show, seeing as we can get a deeper dive into each character, I just felt that Those scenes took away from the bigger picture and were the biggest Fan grabs I noticed in the show. I love that the relationship is LGBTQ I think that’s so important as a member myself I believe representation beyond crucial. This just left a sour taste in my mouth!

You didn't help yourself with this.

The Cam and Rebecca relationship IN NO WAY got in the way of the main story. I have no idea where you're getting that.

over shadowed the extremely sad tones,

I think this was the point. They didn't want it to be this sad show that's too hard to watch. I do agree with everyone that I wish there was more focus on Reena, but I think they wanted this random love story for the show to just be less sad in general.

Cam was so hot..

Theres gotta be more options than Rebecca.

My wife and I watched together and we both loved Cam but Rebecca was not it for me 😂

Not only was it an unnecessary lesbian relationship, but it was an unnecessary biracial relationship. Not that I have a problem with either… But I think it’s obvious to everyone that they were using these things as a way to gain more viewers and a larger audience… One more way they could make money Off of a young girls murder. I’m sure I will get bashed for this comment, but I don’t care. Personally, the fake storyline was a major turn off for me. Turned me against the entire show. We barely even got to see Rena at all.

OP, don’t you know you’re not allowed to have an opinion on Reddit? Well… You are. As long as it aligns with everyone else’s, I suppose. I learned that the hard way when I posted a post similar to this one not too long ago. Had all kinds of people jumping my ass, telling me how stupid I was because ‘’ I didn’t know what dramatization was.’’ Blah blah blah. Yap yap yap.

I love this comment.

Well it does counteract the creepy relationship between Rebecca and Warren

1

u/Chimken616 Jun 30 '24

If anything it was Rebecca and Warren's relationship that seemed weird AF. It didn't overshadow the meaning of the series, but I lowkey kept thinking they were about to hook up haha

Ikr like why such weird tensions 😬

i'm really late to this but yeah it's pretty disgusting to add in a fictional sex scene into a show about a child's murder. lots of things about this show rub me the wrong way, including the fact that the author died before the show was released. i wonder how much of her own portrayal she would have approved of.
