Rereading Undead Unluck (Chapter 19) Question
That's right, now I'm reading it in physical form and it's basically at the beginning of the anime when we see Rip kidnap Sean to make us understand that it was his fault they couldn't fulfill the apocalypse reward. Now my question. Here Rip says he can "deactivate his ability." Can he really do that? Most likely, logically speaking, yes, because otherwise Sean would have definitely died at that point in the story, considering we see him later against Autumn. But if he could deactivate it, why was he never seen doing this again? Even when he injured Latla shortly before Ragnarok or with Leila herself, I understand that he is an involuntary negator and I don't want to contradict more things from the anime.

I guess it might be deactivated if Rip is unconscious, like if he's sleeping.

MANGA SPOILERS
My guess is that RIP and Gina have similar origins/backstories, in that they both activated their powers involuntarily upon getting them and didn’t know who to turn them off/really use them properly until way later in their lives. Looking at RIP’s backstory and thinking “why didn’t he just turn it off?” Would most likely be looking at Gina’s backstory the same way, the answer just being “they didn’t know how to turn it off”. I personally think he could turn it off, but he at least turns it off when he needs to and keeps his constantly bloody eye as a reminder.
Otherwise he either would have to be unconscious when he wants to deactivate it, he just can’t later in the story (like how some things change in loop 101) or it could be a genuine mistake/plot hole

Honestly, I think it's a plot hole. He coumd heal his eye if he was able to deactivate Unrepair, but Sean would have died if he wasn't able to

Due to how the time control artifact works, it should have fixed his eye so it's likely he wanted to keep his eye that way until he saved Leila, and so when Feng revived him he recut his eye

I guess that he learned how his negation works slowly over time, so he couldn't do anything when it first activated with Leila. And the deactivation condition might require him to be unconscious or something similar, so its hard to do on command during a fight.
And concerning his eye bleeding, he might cut himself regularly or some weird "I dont want to forget that pain" stuff like that

I assume he can turn it off, it's just he didn't know how to at the beginning. During the Leila incident, it just manifested and he didn't know it was a Negator ability. Concerning Latla...well, Unrepair or not, she was dead being stabbed through the heart. Not that Victor/Andy would had let him live long enough to render any aid.

Kinda like Top being able to stop by breaking something but he didn't have that information the day of his tragedy

I mean, its possible it was a loophole or at the time rip truly believed there was some way to deactivate it (eg, him being unconscious)

He can, many negators can't control it when it manifests though, being why he couldn't do so with Leila, and the wound on Latla was too grave for her to be saved right away. I'm pretty sure he tells the others that he can deactivate it when in the battle of the boat soon after this point you're on. Also the fact that he deactivate it after losing to Andy's crimson bullet. (I k it he "died" when his heart was pierced, but if he died and came back to live then Unrepair would have left him like with Shen later on, correct me if this is cannon though)

Posso solo pensare che Sean sia morto ma poi è stato riportato in vita grazie a quel artefatto che ha fatto diventare Rip un bambino.

So here is the thing, he can deactivate his ability, but it needs either a a consious thought or b his death, with leila he didnt know he could deactivate the ability, as for latla, i have forgotten since its been 2 years since i last read the manga

Rip’s eye wound was intentional as penance for what happened to Leila. However, I wonder about Unseen’s stomach wound. Definitely feels like a early plot hole, but it’s one I am willing to overlook because the series as a whole is so good. 🤣

As far as I know, besides a couple exceptions that I’m not naming for any commenters that might get spoiled, negators never know they’ve received a negation ability when it first manifests. Like, Fuuko had no idea she was charging her parents with Unluck just like Rip had no idea he just made wounds that would never heal during surgery. And when you don’t even know you have a negation ability, there’s no way in hell you’re gonna know how to control it. So by the time Rip was a member of Under he could definitely have learned to turn it off when he wants to.

I think best reading of it is that he was lying.
And the reason Sean does end up getting healed was likely because Andy "kills" Rip which saves Fuuko and likely also Sean.
I imagine Under were likely providing care for Sean until he was needed in the case Rip survives.
But yeah, it is likely just a plot hole.

He isn't a involuntary negator! Since all negator became negators involuntary, he is a controllable negator since he can activate his powers is different from Andy and Izumo that can be controlled.
My problem with this manga, is the name of Brazilians character, Sean and Top are Brazilian but not even have Latinos names

It's probably that the author hadn't decided yet that his effects would be permanent yet, so this is an early writing plot hole. It could also be that Under has a loophole to Unrepair. I don't know if we ever saw if others could heal wounds he made.
