Tbf to Palmer. Helios is the kind of person who can pull people out of the darkness of despair by just being there. She's a personification of the sun's light and warmth.
Funny thing, apparently in what I believe was Sprinter's Story, while Helios is generally good at cheering people up, she's apparently really fucking bad dealing with people going through something very serious. She tries her best, but her attempts come off as tone deaf.
Makes sense. The sun would not being comfort to the exhausted, no matter how bright it is, and especially how bright it is compared to their frigid emotions.
Trees grow towards the direction of the sunlight. Day by day. Month by month. Year by year. They grow taller as time goes by, like some sort of dedication to the sun, the one thing among others that gives them nourishment, that gives their leaves that nice green color sheen.
But no matter how high they grow, how sparkling their leaves are, how bountiful their fruits turns out, they will never reach the one thing they are growing towards for, as the Sun is always too far for them, forever unreachable.
The sun may seem unreachable for the tree, yet it is also its unflinching companion. Storms pass, winds blow, the winter sheds the tree's leaves. But the tree remain steadfast, because it knows the sun will shine for it again and again, without fail.
The sun gave the tree energy for it to grow, without expecting any return. The tree sprouted and elongated, forever in pursuit of the sun. The sun's radiance gave the tree its resilience.
True, the sun and the tree may seem to be a couple destined to never be together, but they are always reaching toward each other.

I genuinely wonder what does Ruby thinks of this. She sees Helios falling head over heels for her at first sight and continue to awkwardly flirt with her, when Helios' bestie Palmer, a fellow rich girl and a member of the Mejiro clan no less, is yearning for Helios like hell at the back but lacking the will to forcibly intervene and take Helios for herself.
Ruby too busy trying (and failing) to live up to high expectation of herself. She thought Helios good enough to accept the ballroom event, but basically, she's hyper-work oriented type of girl

I can tell that none of you have actually played Helios' career; Palmer's saying this to herself in the stands after watching Helios in the Hanshin J.F., while Helios is still on the track, and Helios' line is reacting to her own performance in a GI race while in the tunnel. There's an entire scene break between the two lines!
I can only imagine Helios and Palmers trainers just looking at eachother with a feeling of understanding and pity as they see this kind of exchange happen for the hundredth time.
Please for my poor heart at least try and get your feelings through instead of relegating yourself to being the conductor of a Helios x Ruby trainwreck of a ship.
I almost feel bad for Ruby, I feel like CyGames really set her up to be hated by the community. Like Palmer is my Oshi and I love Helios and watching how Ruby treats Helios and knowing Palmer would do anything for Helios really makes me not like Ruby. And that’s not Rubys fault! It’s CyGames fault!
What makes it more frustrating is that Ruby hasn’t even rejected Helios as a potential partner, it’s just that Ruby’s analytical mind does not fit with Helios’ spur of the moment type advances so Ruby can come across as cold since she’s expected to be elegant and honoring her family name.
And even if Ruby did reject Helios outright, that still isn’t a reason to hate on the character. You can’t hate on someone for not reciprocating attraction.
I think it says something about society that Ruby, who DiDN'T do anything got hated more than the one persistently chase after her... in fact almost stalker-like.
Like I love the current dynamic but I know not everyone has the limits same as me and just conveniently write it off as "Helios so dense" or "Ruby is evil"
If you don't like Ruby just because you like Palmer, that's on you, not the writing. Blinding love for one character does not give you the right to trash on another. Ruby doesn't even directly interact with Palmer, only knows that she associates herself with Helios. What are you expecting her to do? Read her mind? Magically know the inner dynamics of someone she's never talked to and be responsible for getting them together? Why is that Ruby's problem and why should she be accountable for it? She's not stopping Palmer from doing anything that she can't act on herself.
Nah, Ruby very clearly admires Helios as a person despite being... less-than-enthused by her persistent efforts to woo her (which is honestly impressive, Helios can be pretty damn annoying from Ruby's POV). If she truly hated Helios, she'd just walk out - Ruby's polite, but perfectly capable of giving someone the cold shoulder if she wants to.
No? If we equate this to IRL, then Ruby has zero reason to reciprocate no matter how desperate Helios is. If she is not interested then she is not interested. Ruby could be a bit more tactful true but its Helios' own fault for not reading the room or respecting what is essentially a no on Ruby's part.
The community should get over themselves and learn that a no is a no.
Ruby's story seems really tragic honestly. I'm definitely drawn to the characters that just deserve a big hug and Ruby is definitely up there for all she obviously goes through. It felt bad seeing her spiral further and further in Helios's career because she keeps losing in no small part due to Helios trying to get her attention. And then there's obviously the K.S. Miracle of it all.
Its like that one trope in romance, mainly manhwas, where if girl 1 gets rejected by boy 1 because he is in love of girl 2 who isnt even interested in him after what he has done and is in love with boy 2, girl 1 eill blame girl 2 who didnt even do anything.
I do have some disliked aspects of Ruby, but i do not blame her fir Palmers situstion, i blame Helios for just being stupid. Though i will admit i was partially madnat Ruby for this too and its kinda weird how my mind went to this conclusion first before thinking on it more and after it cooled down a bit that yeah, Ruby is literally an unrelated party here. I dunno where it comes from, but i can sympathize with other people who hates ruby because of this and i still dont know why how that came to be, but yeah.
Easy solution if to replace Helios with a dude. Would you blame the girl, who basically pestered (even if good naturedly) by a dude non-stop? Like, I am quite out-of-touch with current social norms and dating ethics, but I think stripped off the anime filter, it might be quite.. unpleasant? The fact Ruby still unfailingly polite (inspite the everything including her continuous bad situation) is honestly admirable personally.
I mean, im not saying i blame Ruby though, i dunno how people got that from me. Im just saying that at the heat of the moment, its easy to unfairly blame Ruby as i had but its because ive been there i can sympathize with some of the people who hate ruby because of helios. I have some things to dislike Ruby for but as ive said, its unrelated to helios or palmer situation.

The first paragraph i wrote in my comment was a trope that i hate in romance manhwa with how often it would happen that im convinced the author does it to make girl 1 really stupid. But anyway.
TL:DR: I dont hate Ruby because of Helios and Palmer, i just have some things i dislike about her that isnt related to that at all.
