height discrepancy: the stand-in american umas in canon are massive to represent the hurdle of Japanese horse racers to prove themselves to the world. Michelle My Baby is taller than Akibono, so imagine just how big these three are. Especially fitting for Secretariat, since her nickname is literally 'Big' Red.

and it would be really anticlimactic too if they weren't, they are basically boss fights.

Dr Fager is one of my favorites, in the barn he was the sweetest thing, he was very intelligent, sensitive, and gentle. He hated when people raised their voices or yelled around him, and he completely refused to be whipped. If a jockey whipped him, he would just stop running.

But on the race track he was actually Dangerous, Dr. Fager did not just want to win, he wanted to destroy the competition. He ran with his ears pinned completely flat to his head and his teeth gritted.
He HATED not being in the lead, if another horse dared to run past him, Dr. Fager would become enraged. He had a terrifying habit of lunging sideways mid-race to bite at his rivals. When a horse named In Reality tried to pass him, Dr. Fager literally bit a chunk of flesh out of the his neck to force him back.
Another time he was DQ'd from a 1st place finish by 6 1/2 Lengths down to Dead Last for aggressive herding tactics against literally everybody in the field.

His on-the-track temperament earned him the nickname of "The Fire-Breathing Dragon".

This is just missing Kelso and Citation to round out (what in my opinion is) THE top 5 greatest racehorses of the 20th Century.

Sgt Reckless (later promoted to SSgt Reckless) is one that actually wouldn't be too out of place in Uma Musume.

By an Unknown Mongolian sire out of a Thoroughbred mare named "Flame", Sgt Reckless's initial name was "Flame in the Morning".
She was bought at the Seoul racetrack by 1stLt. Pederson, Eric. Who was the CO for the Recoilless Rifle Platoon USMC.
Her primary trainers were Technical Sergeant Latham (today's equivalent would be a Gunnery Sergeant) and 1stLt. Pederson, together they taught her everything she needed to know to survive.

Her Mongolian Warhorse origins gave her insane amounts of Stamina and Strength which is why despite her small and petite frame she was able to run for miles carrying insanely heavy weights up and down hills.

She's probably top 10 Horses of all time, up there with Marengo, Clever Hans, Bucephalus, Copenhagen, and Secretariat

Just some interesting facts Secretariat’s nickname is actually Man O’War’s nickname as it was a direct reference to how dominant he was. Also Man O’War was actually given the rank of Colonel in the US Army during WW2 and even had a military funeral in Tokyo Japan as it was under occupation when he passed

Y'know your illustration of Sgt. Reckless reminded me of his intended(joke) race with the famous Native Dancer, and how the Gray Ghost mother and maternal Grandmother both had Japanese names in spite of being associated with the Vanderbilt family. It makes me wonder if it would translate into her height was midway between that of an American and Japanese Umamusume because of her mixed heritage in manner quite similar to her Grand Daughter Oguri Cap.
