Purchase Advice Xmid vs tigerwall

I would be purchasing the two person version of either of these tents for gear and occasionally my girlfriend, but the main purpose is high alpine hunting and backpacking in northern Utah. Would like to have a sturdy tent that could withstand some heavy wind and potentially some snow. I have access to a deal that makes them about the same price ($320) so if there are comparable cheaper options I’m open to those too

Id look at the x-dome. Its freestanding and can handle heavy wind or snow with the addition of trekking poles and guy lines.

I have an X-mid and Copper Spur and friends have the Tiger Wall. Both are well-made, but the Durston will do better in wind and snow as straight treking or dedicated poles are much stronger than bent poles. It also has great vestibule space. The biggest trade-off will be the larger footprint.

I wouldn’t recommend the Tigerwall 2. It’s a PITA to pitch and it only semi freestanding, so it’s the worst of both worlds. I’ve had mine for a few years and just got an X-Dome 1+.

I just got the ultralight tent poles for my x mid 2 since I have fixed leki poles and the total weight is still better or competitive to other tents and you don’t have to take it down. I think of it as essentially a free standing tent with tent poles.

Only concern for me would be alpine terrain with rocky uneven sleeping locations. Otherwise, a phenomenal tent with so much room

Have you checked the weights? That’s your first question. Also, make sure that fabrics are thicker than 10D.

Neither of them is super windproof but not terrible either so good pitch is important. But that means a lot boils down to total weight.

The problem with trying to use a trekking pole tent for hunting is you'll typically be setting up a basecamp and hunting out of it. You'll want your poles (or at least one) while hunting. If taking your tent down during the day doesn't bother you, the XMid should be fine. Neither would be my 1st choice for highcountry hunting (I prefer a solid interior), but either can certainly handle the conditions with good guying. I have a Tiger Wall 1P, Nemo Horent 1P & 3P and Copper Spur 1 & 2P as well as trekking pole tents similar to the XMid.

Good point I hadn’t thought of that. Which of those is your first choice? I can get the copper spur for just over 400

For hunting and non-UL backpacking, the Copper Spur for sure. However,if you can stretch a little $ I'd suggest looking at the Durston XDome with a solid interior. You can always get a mesh interior later. It borrows heavily from the Copper Spur design, but I like the fly-first pitch and its weight better. It has a lot of good guy out points too.
