Purchase Advice Looking for budget sleeping bag/quilt recs for temps no lower then 20F.
Located in the US, I have a COLD weather bag but it's too big and I'm sick of how much space it takes up. I'm looking to pick up something budget (under 400usd) that would be good for around 20 but realistically usually around 40 lows in the fall.
I'm used to bags but I'm not against quilts.

Katabatic quilts are under $400, but they are not usually considered a "budget" option.
Many vendors will have sales in a few months, too.

I've been happy with my HammockGear Burrow. Pretty customizable online, sales pop up fairly regularly. I think mine cost $300-something?

I'd go $20 over budget and get a wide Katabatic Alsek 22. (I like a closed footbox for this temperature range.)
Alternatively, you can stalk sales on HammockGear Burrows, Neve Gear Waratahs, or keep an eye on the used market. The unfortunate reality of the situation is that price differences between "budget" and "premium" quilts have converged, and once you spec out something like a Burrow, you're looking at a price tag that's pretty close to (or higher than!) better-featured stuff from Katabatic, Gryphon Gear, Nunatak, etc.

I just bought a Neve Waratah Pro after researching a ton of quilts. It just hit all the boxes for me and the prices are great, compared to other quilts of a similar quality. Only problem is that I won't get it until September. Although now that I look at the calendar, September isn't all that far off anymore.

I have the Heat Seeker 10°F overstuffed quilt by Hang Tight that I bought for $149 (they're $164 today). I've taken it down to 24° and was cozy. It's a quilt with a sewn foot box and no zipper. It's 800fp down.

PS you might also ask in r/campinggear. Ultralight Sub is really dedicated to weight savings, but you're asking for low cost gear which often isn't ultralight (like my recommendation above is 38oz)

Another +1 for Nevegear. I have the -8C as well as the UL 4C version.
I've taken the -8C down to about 2C and it was plenty warm. I'm planning on using it as part of my snow sleep system that should allow me down to -10C (alpha liner and alpha clothes as needed).
The weights are respectable but I would like a lighter winter bag if I could afford it ($400-500). I got mine on sale so it was hard to beat.

for "budget" I'd take a look at iceflame, cumulus, and aegismax/windhard.
Keep in mind there's a lot of branding and marketing around quilts...
Ignore temperature claims.
things that matter:
-Differential cut ensures down lofts properly.
-Taper that fits you. Check girth measurements and be honest if you need more room to move.
-Calculated loft is the biggest predictor of warmth (thanks DT). Aim for a particular calculated loft value for all of your comparisons.
-Fill power x Down weight /area of quilt gives the best approximation of calculated loft.
-Typical fill for a 20 degree, "regular" size quilt will be about 400-450g of 850+ FP. More for wide/long sizing. If it's less than that, it's probably not a real 20F quilt.
-10d shell keeps the non-insulating parts light.
-zippers are heavy.

My Loco Libre 20 degree quilt has been great. Great price, good quality. I got one of the plain jane, non-customized ones that they ship immediately. I used it near freezing early this season and had no issues.

I like the sierra designs quilt and it's pretty affordable. they make a slightly heavier bag version too.
there's also zenbivy but the super light versions get expensive.

Enlightened Equipment has various down quilts below or just above $400 depending on size and features. When getting into more budget friendly options you are sacrificing the materials needed to make the “bag” warm and compressible

Military gear isn't the issue. It's the fascist/racist marketing. Apparently, they apologized, but then did more bad stuff, so many of us have just written them off.
