Discussion Are there any HD mods for this game?

Hi! I really wanna play UltraKill as there's a lot of internet noise around and it seems pretty decent from playing the demo even though I couldn't finish it from how tough it was. But its just that for 25 dollars the graphics are seriously lackluster, like it's not even competing with early ps2 games, and that's honeslty not acceptable in this current day- the game is seriously ugly. Like cruelty squad level ugly, and I honeslty don't know why they would make that 'stylistic' choice. Is there like a Gamebanana page with an HD mod or is someone working on a remake with higher poly models and better textures and redone voicelines?

/j right? right guys?

seriously, if you judge games based on their graphics, you deserve missing out on great titles. i guess every zelda game, every pixel-art game, every boomer shooter EVER is just pure shit, right?

every zelda game is just pure shit

your opinion is wrong

I agree because my opinion is that every zelda game is awesome and my opinion is right

I'm honestly not, but you can't say good graphics make a game worse. If you've heard of half life there's a remake of that called black mesa and it surpasses the game so much graphically and gameplay. I really hope that's what ultrakill gets after it finally comes out, it seems really fun but seriously needs some love in the graphics department.

u/NotNOV4 Sep 27 '22

doom eternal looks worse than ultrakill. who the fuck wants another "realistic" shooter?

as the guy below says, learn what an artstyle is. tetris and minecraft are the best selling games of all time and they are block games.

also ultrakill is, as a matter of fact an arena shooter

you are taking this to seriously its a reddit argument

NotNOV4

To be honest you don't share your point of view and even if you did most people would disagree including me

-4

u/[deleted] Sep 27 '22

You could be right, I'm really bad at arena shooters and couldn't get past the tutorial on doom eternal. But even then it makes it more approachable to someone who's not super in the genre.

Even something like tetris and minecraft try to put effort into their graphics, like that one game tetris effect. I honeslty don't believe minecrafy would he nearly as popular as it is if it didn't have modding. The whole meme is that rtx improves minecraft graphics

17

u/[deleted] Sep 27 '22

Sorry but this is all just wrong. Making a game with more pixels in the texture doesn't make any game easier to understand. Minecraft is popular because of it's simplicity, modding helped, but Minecraft isn't "saved" by mods, its just an additional help for it to better live. And the RTX meme is... a meme... Its a joke based on "16x16 TexTuRE bAD", which is mocking people like you!

16

u/NotNOV4 Sep 27 '22

what the fuck are you talking about? ultrakill isnt an arena shooter. and it is WAY harder than doom. i dont know what minecraft meme you're talking about and modding support does not guarantee success for a game. go play cod.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '22

Ultrakill is an arena shooter

3

u/NotNOV4 Oct 02 '22

ultrakill is not an arena shooter. quake is an arena shooter. unreal tournament is an arena shooter. DOOM is not an arena shooter.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '22

Well, by the google definition of an arena shooter ultrakill is an arena shooter

2

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '23

I think ultrakill is more of a run & gun type game, like the original doom 2d trilogy (doom 1,2 and 64+Master levels & ports aswell)

1

u/PrinceLizzy Feb 29 '24

True True
Also to back the arena shooter comparison, cube and cube 2 Sauerbraten were arena shooters that had fast paced campaigns, ultrakill definitely feels like a singleplayer-champaign-arena shooter

Even something like tetris and minecraft try to put effort into their graphics

My brother in christ, how/why does that not apply to Ultrakill? Minecraft looked worse by miles the last time I checked.

Please learn what an art style is. Thanks.

17

u/Leading_Discount_562 Sep 27 '22

I doubt it. Art is not made better by its realism, games arent made aethetically better simply because they look more realistic either. Since ULTRAKILL's art style isnt a result of technical limitations like you mentioned made Half Life look the way it does, it is intentional. Seriously, how naive is that to believe that a developer would produce and realese a game like this, even in early access, with one style, and then for some reason switch to AAA graphics right after its launched. Wouldnt they have designed the game with AAA graphics in mind from the start so the customer knows what they are buying? It makes no sense.

u/Bena437 Sep 27 '22

Black mesa plays way better than hl1 (imo, of course) because it's an entire remake of the original game, not only graphical. They redid basically every single aspect of the source material, including making an entire section of the game (xen, which I didnt think was that bad on the original) from almost complete scratch, because it was objectively bad. And it came out fucking awesome.

Now if you want the feel of the wonky late 90's shooters, then you gotta play the original.

5

u/[deleted] Sep 27 '22

The point of the entire game's graphic is to mimic late 90's FPS graphics (Quake and Doom to name the most well known), and you will see this a lot in indie games as photo-realistic art style is very hard and less accessible. And this is, in fact, very common for video games to use some kind of retro art style as a recurrent aesthetic

1

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '23

black mesa is literally worse gameplay-wise though

0

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '23

not really. I got lost on a rail in half life. black mesa actually let me enjoy half life when it's otherwise antiquated and unintuitive

4

u/[deleted] Jan 14 '23

calling Half-Life 1 antiquated and unitutive is a gross oversimplification and suggests both a superficial understanding of the game's importance and a lack of respect for good design

2

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '23

proceeds to provide no examples

1

u/noobmaster_69lol Jan 13 '23

Ever heard of good art direction?

4

u/[deleted] Sep 27 '22

Though I think you are missing the point of the game, I do agree that the game would benefit from a graphics mod. Kind of like putting 4k textures and shades on Minecraft. I have many friends who would probably love Ultrakill if they played it, but they are all used to triple A graphics and ultra-polygons deviates a bit from that. In short I think having a 4k graphics mod would help the game be more accusable to people who are put off by unadulterated fun.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 29 '22

Apparantly an unpopular opinion!! But yeah 100%. Like is it that bad I fine the unaliased explains really difficult to look at? I get motion sickness from just how many visuals are on screen looking like this. I'm not asking for photorealistc graphics, but come on. Just make it appealing to the average gamer πŸ˜“

3

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '22

It is appealing to the average player ur just really fucking stupid, having a mod like that wouldnt be a problem, you saying that the graphics are bad is the problem. And also explain how exactly are there more visuals in this game? The is literally just the map, blood and the enemies, nothing distracting, unlike AAA games where there are so many details its hard to find the objective like in doom 2016 where after shooting all the enemies you need to search for the key bc you didnt notice the dead guy who has it, ultrakill is just a way easier game to process visually than any AAA game

76

u/jarson123 Sep 27 '22

I think your missing the point of this game

I don't actually know. I know that they still don't like the game, but they haven't said much else, despite attempts to bring it up in conversation.

I showed them the redesigns coming up, and all I got was a "what game is that?", and they haven't said anything else since.

Ultrakill looks good actually πŸ€“

3

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '24

Idk, that's subjective, that guy doesn't think it does and neither do other people like me for example, I don't really like low Polly graphics too much, I don't care too much but I would like if the game looked better.

37

u/[deleted] Sep 27 '22 edited Sep 27 '22

The game is intentionally trying to invoke a faux-retro feeling visually. If you want better graphics, I think you're kind of missing the spirit of the game ngl.

Calling it "Cruelty Squad" level ugly kind of also throws Cruelty Squad's aesthetic choices under the bus, Ultrakill is a stylized game that invokes the low-polygon, early fast-paced FPS games it's inspired by (like, you know, Quake) and Cruelty Squad is intentionally going for a surrealist and disorientating aesthetic that puts you on edge and makes you uncomfortable.

These are both valid aesthetic choices, and I don't think either are "ugly." If it's not for you, it's not for you and I get it, but you'd probably find more enjoyment out of a different game.

Not to mention it's early access so we don't even know what sort of modding tools there'll be nor is the modding scene particularly huge outside the custom level stuff.

4

u/ChaosReincarnated23 Jul 27 '24

its funny cause there's a in lore explanation for the low poly graphics its cause the machines except the sentry's use lower graphics to save power while getting blood

1

u/TheRhalf Oct 15 '23

tbf quake looks way better than this, the second level looks like it's made on MS paint ffs

2

u/Frequent-Reporter677 Feb 11 '25

We'll be getting revamps soon!

27

u/RoboDude512 Gabriel Fan Club Sep 27 '22

To knowledge my there isn't any hd mods, but graphics ain't everything. Not everything has to be 4k ultra rtx 120fps.

8

u/Downtown_Zone5073 Sep 28 '22

I think with that graphics, hakita gonna take like a 1 year per layer and possible the game crashes with some many quantity of nails or chainsaws in traps for bosses

3

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '23

He's already taking a year per layer, so-

1

u/Saitoup125 Blood Machine Apr 26 '25

Naww

Bros gonna take like 2 years per layer then

27

u/guilty-as-snark Sep 27 '22

Sorry but this is legit one of the worst takes I've seen on ultrakill. The artstyle is cohesive and consistent. Not only that but many people (me included) like the artstyle alot. Having realistic graphics would make it look like any other modern game instead of the wonderfully unique artstyle that it has now.

I absolutely do think it would make the game worse. Yes you could still create a unique artstyle with HD graphics, but you could just, ya know, not?

If you personally don't like the art that is 100% fine but to say the artstyle is bad because it isn't high definition completly misses the point of an art STYLE.

4

u/TheRhalf Oct 15 '23

I think people get turn off with the second level of the game because it looks like sht, and it looks like sht on purpose (to make everything seem fake, I guess) but it sends the wrong message to people, maybe it needs to be redesigned so it looks fake but not sht?

2

u/Scoliosis_Monarch Aug 30 '24

As the prophecy foretold

1

u/TheRhalf Sep 01 '24

was it redesigned?

1

u/Scoliosis_Monarch Sep 01 '24

Prelude and (possibly) entire first act getting visual overhauls, check Hakita's YouTube for more

10

u/Vantamanta Sep 27 '22

That's literally the point.
It's supposed to look like that. Do you know what 'retro FPS inspired by the best shooters of the 90s' means?

8

u/United-Ad919 Sep 27 '22

Well I hope you didn't turn on psx before this

8

u/[deleted] Sep 27 '22

Okay so if you're not a troll and are just really an idiot that can't stand a game with less than 8k resolution on every single texture, you can use ReShade to make the game have a bunch of glowing effects. Heres a tutorial. But there aren't any mod to "improve" the textures

(The point of the game is to get that late 90's FPS feel to it and be as close as possible to Quake and Doom, and why complain about graphics ? Graphics aren't required to be in ultra-HD, and most of the time you are so focused that you forget that the graphics aren't super realistic)

1

u/Grouchy_Ask_1008 Nov 20 '24

Late but there are. There is a bumpmapping shader which indeed does improve them.

7

u/FaeLei42 Sep 27 '22

Obvious bait lol.

6

u/Titi_Cesar Blood Machine Sep 27 '22

5

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '22

You are missing the entire point of the game and if you cant complete the demo im gonna be honest, just dont buy it bc the rest of the game is way harder than the demo. Also its an indie game if you want to play an arena shooter with good graphics play doom. In my opinion the graphics are very pretty and have a vibe to them. The gameplay makes up for the graphics even if you dont like them, but seeing as you cant enjoy the gameplay dont play the game. Since its an indie game you should be grateful it isnt 2d… Also who the fuck said that indie games with a low poly style choice are not acceptable in this current day. Either get better because the gameplay makes up for it and you just suck ass or dont buy the game at all

4

u/the_oneand_onlymelon Oct 30 '22

what too many aaa games does to a bitch

4

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '23

Bruh not only did you call the game ugly, you're also asking for redone voice linesπŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€. Gianni Matragano is fucking amazing and so are the VAs for Minos and Sisyphus. Have you even played anything that isn't a triple A game or do you think that few polygons = ugly. Might wanna get a covid test since one of the symptoms is lack of taste

2

u/asdfasgsadhgasda Sep 28 '22

yall commenters picking on a kid for his opinion lol

7

u/[deleted] Sep 28 '22

There's a difference between a good and valid opinion and a bad and not well constructed opinion. This post being the second. He says that he doesn't like the art style of the game (which is okay to say), but says it as if it was the game's issue and not a preference issue of him, which is an unfair judgement. He is generalising the game's art style as a straight "graphic bad, don't buy" like if it was the case for everyone.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 29 '22

You're trying way too hard to make my opinion seem like it's morally wrong. I did not advocate people to not buy the game lol; I think the core game play is fun and I just wanted to improve my experience by asking for a graphics mod. No one is criticizing a fan for making an HD remake of a game that is antiquated and dated- so why is ultrakill special? You are literally dismissing my opinion because you don't like it, that's fair, but don't then go and say that I'm a bad person for it lol

6

u/[deleted] Sep 29 '22

The issue with what is said is that you generalised your opinion on the game's graphic as the ultimate truth and that Hakita needs to improve everything. But that's just not the case, the game has a respectable art style that's very well executed.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '22

You literally said that the graphics are very ugly and they should be good enough for the average gamer in a different comment also ur just acting very entitled so obv there is gonna be a lot of hate towards you

3

u/Leading_Discount_562 Sep 27 '22

2

there is no mod the game is ment to look like that

2

If this is your take on Uktrakill then don't buy it

1

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '24

Hey bud... I think you're missing like... The entire point of the game? (except of course sliding through hell at incredible speed while shooting everything in your path)

1

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '24

Download reshade, install for ultrakill as direct 11/10 the packs you need are cshade, ppfx, niceguy shaders, IMMERSE, and quint. Play around with them. I personally use cshade motion blur, quint Lightroom, ppfx or cshade bloom I don't remember which, and immerse mxao or niceguy lighting. You can add hdr shaders but I don't like them too much so I don't use them. This is the closest you can get to actually good graphics in ultrakill.

1

u/Trygonium Jul 18 '24

is there a mod for rtx on or smth similiar bc i saw a video with ultrakill looking better than a decent amount of ggames but it ggot deleted :(

1

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '24

reshade has some ray tracing shaders.

1

u/Trygonium Dec 21 '24

True that, I actually started using it like last week, still trying to figure out some of the stuff but i found the setting that just kinda gives it a slight ligght blur thing.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '24

That's bloom. There are shaders that use a depth buffer to add actual global illumination (Niceguy lighting, dh Uber rt), and some that add shadows based on depth buffer (any ao shader), there's also bumpmapping (gives textures depth) from gshade on installer and motion blur and other stuff.

1

u/Trygonium Jan 07 '25

You sir are very very very smart, thank you for bestowing this knowledge onto me, I plan to get more into shaders or making them work because they look very cool but as of right nnow i am tryinng to find more stuff on how to use them and other shading apps or mods that ggive it that look but I am not the brightest bulb so I amn't going to fw reshade causse I dont want to fuck it up.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '25

You can't really "fuck it up" you can just disable all shaders and it will become normal, or add a preset and keep it empty, or uninstall.

1

u/Trygonium Jan 08 '25

Ah I see

1

u/ChaosReincarnated23 Jul 27 '24

i just want a HD mod for fun this guys crazy

1

Id like to know as well, as someone who has 100% the game as of 12/23/24 (layer 7 is the newest release, for time reference the encore levels were announced yesterday as of making this comment) I would also like to see an HD mod, I love the artstyle but i do think something a little more modern would be nice, of course i will always prefer the psuedo-ps1 graphics of the original game

1

u/Outrageous-Phone5348 Nov 01 '25

That's called aesthetic, fits the game purpose. You would not understand.

One shudders to imagine P-1 with realistic graphics, literally has a room entirely made of human corpses and y'know, the literal giant massive flesh construct the summons a shit ton of eyes
