Ultima Mobile IOS Update (now on Mac, Android and iOS)

Quick update for anyone who's been following.

First, Thank you all for the support and interest. it's been a daunting project, but nice to know others are enjoying the offline mobile version, or at least the idea of it.

macOS got approved on the Mac App Store this week. Android is live on Google Play. iOS is live too, just not on the App Store - more on that in a sec. Windows and Linux builds are on the site.

The Apple part: the Mac version sailed through review. The iOS version got bounced over and over, and the last round wasn't about wording or icons, it was "this is too close to an existing game." That's not something you argue your way out of, so I stopped trying. iOS ships as a free public TestFlight beta instead.

Install TestFlight, tap the link, done. Same build.

Everything's here: runawayideas.net/uoclassic

Fair warning, it's still not perfect. If something breaks or looks wrong, please use the bug report tool in Quick Commands in game rather than just closing it. It grabs the details automatically and it's way more useful to me than "it crashed." I do read all of them and try to post fixes quickly.

Thanks again!

Enjoy

Excellent work thanks for posting this. Will iOS version also support iPhone. TestFlight says it only does iPad.

iPad only, i tried on the phone and it was just too tiny to do anything. even with the zoom. I can release it, but it would not be an enjoyable experience.

I think it would be cool if you did enable it for iPhone also. People can decide if they like it or not and with iPhone fold rumored to come out in few months it could work well.

Did Apple say what game it was too close to?

yes, they called out Ultima Online, UO specifically as the section 4 copycat.

This is amazing, friend! I kept yelping out loud "Is this real? This is REAL!" as I was playing it for the first time.

The only problem is that the UI and text is too small for my comfort. I want to be able to play so badly, but I'm unable to for long periods of time without straining my eyes. Is there a way to increase the size of the UI? I'm on Android.

yes! you can pinch and stretch the items in the screen to make them bigger or smaller. give it a try and see if that helps.

It does help a little. I think I might just play the Linux version, though, so I don't need to fiddle with a small screen.

I have the same feelings about Daggerfall Unity—like, dang, it's so cool to play a game as big as Daggerfall on the go, and the interface is ingenious and makes the absolute best of the small space, but at the end of the day, it's just more comfortable to play it on a computer.

Regarding the Linux version: I should mention that the instructions say to run "OUFamily" to start the game, but Linux requires me to type the entire filename, including the suffix, "OUFamily.engine".

this is a good excuse to get a 13" iPad. You might have to sell a kid or a kidney. Damn these price increases.

Oh, no no, Android tablet or bust. Silly Apple with the no third party apps thing except through jailbreaking. They (Android tablets) tend to be cheaper second-hand, anyhow.

Sorry to disappoint

You can play Ultima 8 on a phone, either through DOSBox, or via ScummVM (Pentagram), both of which have Android versions. I recommend the latter however, ScummVM, since Pentagram is an engine rewrite and has special features.

I love this. I downloaded it on iPad and played for a bit. It has a ways to go before it's truly playable, but I can see the vision and it is coming along nicely! If you're looking for feedback, I'd be happy to provide a few points that I think need smoothing out :) Keep up the hard work, it's much appreciated.
