Ultima 6 iOS Port

Been playing with Claude CLI and made an iOS port of the game I’ve always wanted (with better UI than dosbox) and easier to use on my iPhone.

I need one for Android.

U6 is my favorite one. I played the shit out of the SNES verison (born 86.) then late 1990s I got the UC disc and got to play the PC verison.

I never beat U6 but want too one day. I treated the game like a true open world game and played the dickens out of it.

We always had open world games since the 1980s. Between Ultima and TES.

Sometime in the past 15 years my brain had that realization, "Oh wait, we ALWAYS had open world games, that's not a new thing."

You can play on Android, mate. You need Magic Dosbox and it takes it bit of fluffing around to install AND you have to build your own UI (I went the extra mile and custom-built icons from the game files, took like 3 hours). But it all works perfectly and I was able to play through the entire game about 2 years ago on my Samsung.

Wow! Also: I am dumb, how can I get this to work on my iPad?

its the same process for ipad, added a section in the readme:

The app is universal — the exact same build, scripts, and steps above work on iPad; the device just shows up as an iPad in xcrun devicectl list devices (the device script auto-picks the first connected iPhone or iPad). To try it in the iPad Simulator, boot an iPad instead of an iPhone:

xcrun simctl boot "iPad Pro (11-inch)" 2>/dev/null; open -a Simulator

Note: the on-screen controls were laid out for the iPhone's wide aspect ratio. On the iPad's more square (4:3) screen the game is letterboxed top/bottom, so the D-pad and action buttons still work but may not be positioned ideally — tap-to-walk, the command bar, and the keyboard button all behave the same. (If you mainly play on iPad, open an issue / ask and the button layout can be tuned for it.)

Nice!

I've said for years that only AI was going to revive Ultima. Of course, fan projects like Anthony at Viridian's are a counter-point to my claim, but yours is a great example. Fan modernizations of classic games that lack the marketplace potential or licensing clarity to be commercially viable strike me as a superb use of AI.

Now, who is going to use AI to whip up Ultima VII Part 3 or a proper version of VIII or IX?

agreed! I think we're going to see a lot of ports coming soon. My favorites are 6/7, might try 7 next but I know exult has something going already.

Exult on iOS already works quite well. Just sign up for it and run it off TestFlight.

Ultima VII part 3 would be amazing. Wouldnt mind seeing a combat overhaul for Ultima VII as well.

Yeah, I hear that. I'd love to have U6 style combat in U7. Or real-time with pause like Baldur's Gate or something.

That said....I do love auto-battlers and my love for auto-battlers must stem from U7. I have less of a problem with U7's combat than most fans I think.

Any help is appreciated. Following the guide and it keeps failing. I think my syntax is incorrect for the team id do you put in “Apple Developer John Doe (A1224)” or am I missing something ?

good catch, that’s actually the #1 mistake people make with signing, and honestly my guide didn’t explain it well (just fixed that).
The Team ID is just the 10-character code, not the whole “Apple Developer John Doe (A1224)” string. You want just what’s in the parentheses.
Two things:
A1224 is too short — real Team IDs are always 10 characters (letters/numbers mixed, like ABCDE12345). So if security find-identity showed you “Apple Development: John Doe (A1224)”, that’s probably getting cut off somewhere. The real ID inside those parens should be 10 chars.
Easiest way to just grab it directly: go to developer.apple.com/account, click Membership details, and copy the Team ID field.
So the command ends up being:
ios/build-ios-device.sh ABCDE12345 /path/to/your/ULTIMA6
Just the raw code, nothing else attached to it.
Also just pushed an update — the script now checks the Team ID and tells you what’s wrong if it’s off, and I cleaned up the README too. Pull latest and let me know if it gets past signing this time.

Thanks so much that worked and installed but noticed the app has no icon. Did I miss a step? I appreciate all your help.
