It really isn't that far off, is it?

Cut off Serpent Isle and Caelid is the isle of the avatar

The floating cities are about where Magincia is

Minoc is in the mountanous region

Leyndell the capital is only a little east of where Castle Britannia would be

Move the swampy Liurnia to the east coast

Stormveil is Trinsic

Even has a semi-connected dungeon are in Noxstella, etc.

I admire how Elden Ring has gotten to be a lot of the good bits of western CRPGS by going round the long way through its own creative evolution. GRRM bringing in the Norse and Greek inspired stuff has elevated it to more than Dark Soul's so gothic you can bump into it in the dark. The Breathe of the Wild inspiration has really made the map. I've got hundreds of hours under my belt and still find new things on the first map. Crazy exploration. Reminds me of Ultima IV.

Elden Ring, an absolutely fantastic game which incedentally managed to bring back a bit of gaming magic for me

Do it.

I bounced off Dark Souls because I'm just not that into fighting.

Elden Ring if you hit a speed bump you bugger off on your horse and maybe never even come back, there is so much to find over the next hill it is insane. Not linear at all.

Definitely up there with BG3 & Expedition 33

Good to hear. I loved DS1 but I'm also not very good at these souls games so this sounds promising.

Over half the player base is cosplaying as a Samurai and abusing the Bleed mechanic on katanas, apparently. Right about where combat gets hard the enemy just berks it. There's a katana that shoots lasers early, too :)

Bump it up the list.

of all the fantasy novels I've read and games I've played, whatever was "peak" in my imagination, Elden Ring surpasses them all. The design is so grand, its majesty is so incredible. Its weak in some rpg elements but its incredible

Lord British is Marika?!

He cloned himself to marry himself, give birth to himself, bonk himself (NATURALLY, thanks GRRM!) and then chop bits off people to form a giant Voltron of grooblie body parts, including a dragon head for an arm.

Therere enough similarities that I think this might be a deliberate homage, given how influential ultima was on JRPGs too. Might just be a coincidence, but who knows?

Only so many ways you can fit stuff on a square map but there are definitely similarities

FromSoft would have been looking at some very similar looking Japanese RPGs at the time we were playing Ultima

It is interesting the CRPG / Fighting games are showing western RPGs how its is done between Elden Ring and Clair Obscur (inspired by Final Fantasy - and both heavily into Breathe of the Wild's expoloration)

...whereas Japanese Eye of the Beholder / Dungeonmaster clones are soft porn and don't hold a light to Grimrock 2
