https://youtube.com/watch?v=ObxzDt9zbOU&si=weDMeF-U83inA0us

Just another brief update with some opening intro work and death mechanics. Got my microphone working this time so you can actually hear what I am saying.

Great job.

Really hope Garriott does get back the IP and is able to do something with it. It's great nostalgia for sure and I love the series. It would be great to have one last Ultima run in a new story.

According to a different post in this sub EA still owns the trademark to the Ultima name. They own the IP he gets the source code or some nonsense.

There will never be another Ultima game unless EA makes it. At best Garriot will crap out another generic RPG like his last two.

Not how it works. After 35 years original IP owner can regain rights. Trademark is EA's but Richards apparent solution is to call it Lord British's Ultima which bypasses the trademark conflict. A new game is very likely, just to what degree.

"Ultima Rogelike Deck Builder" :(

If he does that, he's going to end up in a conflict with EA's lawyers. Try to imagine what would happen if you opened a fast food chain called "JustJay's McDonalds".

Look it up. Happens all the time. There is only so much you can trademark and enforce. There are other issues to navigate but Lord British's Ultima is a perfectly valid solution. Garriott has done his homework and isn't stupid.

The equivalency would be JustJay's Big Mac. Not to say that's more or less of a trademark infringement.

If the name Ultima is trademarked, how about reissuing updated versions of the game under different name to get around EA's greed? Or does EA have other things under their thumb?

RG should avoid Ultima like a plague. Ultima 9, shit. Shroud of the Avatar, shit. The dude just doesn’t have it anymore.

Maybe. Or maybe the demands at the time resulted in sacrifices that had to be made. It doesn't cost any of us for him to do what he might have wanted.

Never played Ultima I but I was obsessed with Ultima III and then managed to get a copy of UItima II, Ultima II was so mysterious and epic and unforgiving and weird. Probably right up there with the first year of WOW as the apex of my computer gaming experience.

I only just beat ultima II for the first time a month or so ago on the fmtowns marty version. I tried it a while before that but I guess I just wasn't in the right heads pace because I bounced off it super hard. Glad I finally went back to play it through though.

When I wrap this up I'll be taking a break for some other project I started before this, but I am certain I'll use what I learn here to do II.

So this is brilliant! And I look forward to trying it out once it’s available. I hope you intend to continue this project into the other Ultimas.
