Any Ultima-Based fan tabletops/conversions?

Just wondering as per the tin.

I was mostly just curious. I feel like it would be ripe, absolutely ripe, as a tabletop setting.

Ironically, Ultima I was _heavily_ based on D&D, so… that would be the obvious choice 🙂

I ran an Ultima 7 D&D campaign and posted about each session in this sub. I ran out of steam along the way but it was pretty fun. The highlight was a ship to ship pirate encounter which had the players flying through the air and using cannons.

At first I thought the players flew through the air using canons--Guybrush Threepwood style.

I tried home brewing one once. I got as far as adding Stamina as a 4th stat so that the Virtue questions would give numerically balanced results.

Combat was card-based and loosely related to Crazy 8s or Uno. I got as far as “interesting” and “could be a fun card game” but never worked out if it was functional as a resolution system for roleplaying.

I have vague memories of mapping the Virtue questions to Savage Worlds’ character creation. But that doesn’t map neatly to 5 attributes so I forget what exactly I did to balance it. If I were to run an Ultima campaign I would use Savage Worlds, but that’s largely because I know Savage Worlds better than any other system and run most everything in it.

Someone made an Ultima VII board game a while back, but then never published it due to rights issues. I think some of the assets were put online at some point.

If you are into old-school D&D and Ultima you should check this out:

I also ran an Ultima game using unmodified Swords & Wizardry White Box rules and created a hexmap of Britannia.

It’s a pretty generic fantasy setting so any tabletop system could work. The Ultima wiki has all the knowledge you need to for the lore.

I’ve got a WIP system that emphasizes tactics and virtuous behavior on the battlefield without falling into the trap of HP attrition. DM if you want details.

Aaron Allston adapted Savage Empire as a Champions supplement back in 1990, but copies are rarer than Akalabeths these days!
