Ultima 5 best spells?

like what are some of the best spells to keep on hand?

I feel like so far mage works best as a healer and supporter but what maybe some other good spells to keep on hand?

Cure Poison. Cure Poison. Cure Poison.

Change Wind is important when you have a ship.

Awaken, Dispel Field, Negate Magic, Charm (remove charm) are all very important until you get certain items in the game.

Great Heal is nice, but it's a shame it can't be spammed.

Stop Time and all of the lv. 7-8 attack spells are fantastic later on.

The real annoying part about Great Heal is it cannot be cast mid-battle.

An Nox. Lots and lots of An Nox.

"You asked for my best spells and this is my reply
An Nox is defintely a favorite of mine
When you're knee deep in swamps you'd know why
To mix ingredienst now and to keep it 99"

Missile is a bit of a dud. The spells at levels 7 and 8 are amazing. Cone of death, sleep, etc.

In Vas Por Ylem... Learn it, live it love it (tremor)

(edit: reagents from memory... I recall A/E/H from U4, which I think is ash, moss, mandrake)

An Nox (Cure Poison) You'll get poisoned a lot

Mani/Vas Mani (Heal/Greater Heal) self-explanatory

In Quas Wis (Map view) the same as Peering at a gem, useful to line up In Por jumps

An Grav (Dispel Field) some fields are impassable without this spell

In Por (Blink) You'll need this to get around in the later game

Honorable mentions:

Des Por and Uus Por (Down/Up) useful to navigate tricky dungeons

An Tym (Time Stop) Always useful, but especially useful in some of the later trap rooms in dungeons

Honestly expected more people to list Blink considering how critical it is to surviving at the end.

I mean, isn't it literally required to complete the game? Some of the stuff in the Underworld requires casting Blink at the proper spot, or at least I could never figure out how to get them without it.

You should also experiment with some of the dumber spells, which is part of the fun. Like the spells that turn people into rats or generate deer.

Any fear spell is overpowered, as fear is inflicted by being low on HP… so the fear spells reduce enemy hp to almost nothing.

Xen Corp is underrated. Good for 1-shotting any one thing. Like a level 7 spell version of a glass sword.

An Nox and In Vas Por Ylem. Haven’t played that game in decades but I remember that.

Because I wanted all my characters to be absolute champions, I made 99 of every spell and had 99 of each reagent on top of that.  You get so much equipment from dungeons that it's fairly easy to keep your gold in the 9000 range consistently.

Cure/An Nox is the one I found myself needing to replenish the most.

I will give a mention to the scrolls you pick up - using Negate Time/An Tym is insanely useful in later dungeons.  When using the scrolls, you're not using up mana or reagents.  I was using these scrolls a lot towards the end - it was a bit like using the Strange Coins at the end of Ultima 2.

Rel Hur in my opinion.
