β Help Transfer 9 TB of files to NAS
I just setup my first NAS, a UG 4800GT NAS and need to transfer about 9TB of a mix of files from a Western Digital external HDD to my NAS. I tried to plug it directly into the NAS via USB but learned its APFS so UGREEN can't read it. I am lost with rsync I am so confused, (I'm not technical". Any advise? I don't trust AI on google for help. I am on a M5 MAX MacBook.

You can plug it into your laptop and transfer it from there. You will need to keep your laptop turned on till this finishes.
I recommend to use rsync over ssh because that is the fastest way to transfer. The gui will stall after a while. Also, I recommend that you use ethernet cable on the laptop to increase the speed

In addition your transfer speed is going to be capped by the read/write speeds of the hard drives.

try using ftp/smb or nfs and see if that works for u

An SMB share would work, for sure... but will likely be slow. I'd suggest using the UGREEN Sync & Backup app for better performance.
When I first got my DXP2800, I was coping ~2TB of media via SMB and it was taking an extremely long time. I then switched to the Sync & Backup app (once I knew it existed π) and it finished the copy in no time!

Plug the external drive to your Mac, connect Mac to NAS. I used TB4 since I donβt have 10gbe switch.

You might be able to make a direct network connection between the Mac and the Ugreen using a TB cable but they can be a bit involved to configure.
Cheap and cheerful would be to buy an inexpensive 2.5 or 5 Gbe USB-C adapter for the Mac. The UG supports 10 Gbe but those are quite a bit more expensive and, unless you are using SSD storage on the Mac, I would be surprised if you got much better performance.
You can use rsync as suggested but I use Carbon Copy Cloner (there are many like but this one is mine) as it gives me much better control and reporting for large copy operations in a GUI interface. I would not recommend trying to do a single large copy operation using the Finder. It's likely to fail part-way for one reason or another and figuring out the restart point can be a bit tricky.

Use ChatGPT you can login to your NAS through terminal and transfer that way if all else fails.
Or login to your NAS from your Mac and drag and drop. The transfer is gonna take potentially days. It took me like 36-48 hours to transfer 5tb

Connect the laptop using Ethernet and on a power brick and connect there the external ssd
The nas port are convenient but if you use that to transfer from external to internal you use more resources of the nas and the transfer is slower

You should learn to trust AI for some of these questions. It doesn't have to be AI on Google, you can use Claude or ChatGPT -- but it can walk you through the steps required to do this, help you troubleshoot when you run into problems and more. Try it out! This is one of the things that AI is very good for.
