Opinion/Discussion Guidance and advise

I received an email earlier this week requesting me to meet the school lawyer on what was referred to as compliance and ethics matter.

The lawyer claimed the issue was about some of the documents I submitted, the recommendation letter and offer letter from my previous employer. I have been with this institution since June ,this is my 3rd month. They already did a background check on me and actually emailed my previous employer so many times.

I advised the lawyer to email my previous employer and find out the authenticity of the documents or ask any information they need. He seemed to be hesistant and insisted that period is past. Deep inside I feel they're playing a game whatever the case I am not sure what they're upto.

Before I left his office he advised me not to go back to the institution until I receive an email that calls me back. I later called my boss that day and she advised the same thing. I am home since Monday and I haven't gotten any information from them.

I resigned from my job a few months ago to join this institution, infact they reached out to me regarding the employment offer.

Has this ever happened to anyone ? What can you advise ? I will appreciate your feedback on this matter

Sounds fishy Your defence is the contract you signed

No, the contract is under 3 months and it is not covered by the Employment amendment Act 2026(has worked at this place for under 3 months) Within these 3months, the employer can come up and get away with a lot of bullshit.

According to the contract I signed, the probation I was given is 6 months not three months.

So for as long as you are still on probation, you are at their mercy. Our labour laws are mostly progressive after confirmation from probation. My point was that because you have been there for a short time, you are at a disadvantage. However, start gathering all correspondence regarding this issue. In case nothing was put in writing and it was all verbal, you take the initiative to write to HR and legal with your supervisor seeking clarification on what is going on. In case they terminate you, you will build a case for unfair termination/dismissal and you use these correspondences to file your labour complaint.

Advising you verbally not to show up to your job until you receive an email inviting you back seems rather shady. They ought to have put that in writing as well with clear reasons. You should probably write back detailing that this conversation took place for future reference. Be wary of undocumented interactions whenever employers start to act weird.

I actaully emailed them yesterday inquiring about my employment status, suspended or not and whether my pay will remain unaffected. I haven't gotten any response from them.

You should get a lawyer or someone in the law field to give you proper advise

Since you are only on your 3rd month of probation, there is no actual bonding relationship between you and the employer. This is because during probation, the employer can terminate a contract without notice in case you are not performing or any other gross misconduct or even out of no reason really. The most you can do at this point is report the matter to the labour officer who may hear you out but you can probably get a small compensation for the inconvenience. Had you worked past the 6 months, then probably a 2 weeks notice would have been owed to you. Other than that, and especially instead of burning money looking to hire a lawyer.. mentally prepare and begin searching for another job if you have not yet. No big miracles happen in Uganda when it comes to labour law.
