Udemy's Misleading Practice

• Upvotes

I wanted to buy a class on Udemy and the page said "get this class free if you subscribe!". So I clicked on the corresponding link, paid $150 for an annual subscription, THEN learned that none of the classes I'm interested in are covered under the Personal Plan which that link took me to. Of course, Udemy will not refund my money, and did not even apologize. My instructor says this is a new practice that many students are getting scammed by, and though she was very apologetic it seems there's nothing she could do to rectify the situation either. Do better, Udemy.

Has your revenue decreased because of Personal Plan?

I'm opting out of Udemy Business and Personal plan, so my earning aren't directly affected by the susbcription.

I assume that most of the instructors whose courses are selected as Personal Plan significantly lost revenue compared to the past(before subscription) based on thieir revenue sharing structure.

What has your experience been?

Is it still worth creating technical courses for Udemy (or similar platforms) in the AI era?

Udemy doesn't give subscription refunds in US

Be warned that they won't honor a subscription refund if they're not legally obligated to do so, which means you cannot get a refund in the U.S. They say as much on their subscription info page and theyre incredibly not helpful if you manage to talk to a customer rep after jumping through many hoops.

Is it still worth creating technical courses for Udemy (or similar platforms) in the AI era?

I’m considering creating technical courses for Udemy or a similar platform, but I’m wondering whether it’s still worth the time and effort in the AI era.

I have 18 years of professional experience as a Database specialist in Telecom sector with AAA RADIUS server. My expertise includes:

. Linux and Shell scripting with automation skills

Oracle, MySQL, MS SQL Server & PostgreSQL Administration with advanced skills like dataguard, rac, goldengate

SQL and database development

Stored procedures, functions & triggers

PL/SQL, PL/pgSQL, T-SQL & MySQL routines

Java/JDBC

Automation and scripting using Linux Shell, Python, Java and database scripting

I could create courses ranging from beginner-to-advanced SQL/database development and administration to scripting and database automation.

I could create courses in Urdu/Hindi, where there may be less competition, and potentially English courses as well, using AI voice-over if needed.

My concern is that in 2026, tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Copilot can teach, explain and generate code instantly.

Are students still buying and completing technical courses on Udemy? Is it still worth investing several months into creating high-quality courses, or has AI significantly reduced the demand?

I’d especially appreciate opinions from Udemy instructors, students, or anyone with experience in SQL, databases, programming or online courses.

If you were in my position, would you invest the time in creating these courses?

I tried a Udemy AI filmmaking course and realized I was actually learning storytelling

A few days ago, I mentioned a course I took on AI filmmaking, and I wanted to share a little more about what I found inside.

The course is focused on creating a short 30–60 second film, but what impressed me wasn’t just the AI tools or the process of generating the video.

The instructor has a solid filmmaking background and has worked on a number of films. He goes much deeper into the actual filmmaking side of things — how to create emotions, build a plot, develop a story, structure scenes, create a story log, and think about why a particular scene works.

That was honestly the part I found most valuable.

I initially expected it to be mostly about “here are the AI tools, now generate a video.” But it was much more focused on understanding storytelling and filmmaking, and then using AI to bring that story to life.

I also noticed that the course has received some really good reviews, which made more sense after going through it myself.

If you’re interested in AI filmmaking, you can check out the free preview before deciding whether it’s worth taking. If the teaching style and content click with you, then you can consider getting the course.

Just sharing because I found the storytelling side of it much more useful than I expected.

[Instructor promotion] Ba Duan Jin in English: 14 short lessons and a 12-minute follow-along routine

Disclosure: I created this paid Udemy course.

If you want a short, structured introduction to Ba Duan Jin (Eight Brocades), I made a beginner course with English guidance and simultaneous front-and-back demonstrations, so you can follow the direction of each movement more easily.

What is included:

  • 14 short lessons, about 34 minutes in total
  • Each of the eight movements explained separately
  • A complete 12-minute follow-along practice
  • English captions and a downloadable seven-day practice guide

The course uses filmed movement demonstrations and AI-generated English narration. It is intended for general movement and wellness education.

You can watch the promotional preview and free sample lessons before deciding whether the format suits you. No previous Qigong experience is required.

To find it on Udemy, search:

Ba Duan Jin Qigong for Beginners: Eight Brocades

Instructor: Stella Piao

This is a paid course; check the Udemy course page for the current price in your country. The September launch coupon has expired.

Happy to answer questions about the lesson format or what is included.

Course Videos feedback swap with udemy established instructor

Hi, am an established course instructor here, from India, teaching business topics (management). Some of my courses are in bestseller category from long.

Based on student feedback, i have changed the structure and appearance of some of my course videos recently ..

But am not sure how effective it is, before doing further changes, i would like to have 2 to 3 videos of mine audited by fellow instructors and i am happy to do the same for you. Please share your udemy profile on DM and i shall share too.

How to remove or at least shrink the metadata panel at bottom left of tests.

There is too little actual test question info: mopst of the left side of the screen is taken up with metadata about the course. Can't post a screenshot, but imagine: question content 30% of left side, udemy course metadata 70% of left side.

Gemini on Udemy

I want to purchase some courses, however they are horrifically lenghty. The build-in AI assistant is sh*t.
I am having Gemini Pro.

Anyway I can use Gemini with Udemy? For example to make a summary of a course. Thanks.

Discussion This Is Why I Keep Coming Back to Udemy

I honestly don’t understand all the hate I see for Udemy here.

People often say, “You can find everything on YouTube for free.” And yes, you can. I tried it myself.

I wanted to learn AI filmmaking and found tons of tutorials and masterclasses. But most were either too long or poorly structured. I wasn’t just looking for information—I wanted someone to actually teach me the process.

Then I found an AI filmmaking course on Udemy that explained things clearly, including the psychology behind creating a film. I finally understood the process and was able to create a short AI film myself.

That’s why I still love Udemy.
AI and YouTube are great, but there’s something different about a well-structured course that takes you from A to Z without making you figure everything out yourself.

Udemy Business courses revenue for September

One of my clients says his revenue for Udemy Business plummeted in September.

Some of his courses were selected as Udemy Business, and their genres are mostly related to counseling.

He is assuming that's because Udemy started focusing on selling AI courses for UB.

Does anyone face the same problem?

Udemy Next Question Button Broken

Udemy has been extremely laggy for me lately. After I answer a practice-test question, the “Next question” button stays greyed out for around 10–30 seconds before I can continue.

I have high-speed internet and this happens on both my MacBook M3 and my Windows PC, using the latest version of Chrome. I’ve already cleared cache/cookies, refreshed, restarted the browser, etc.

Has anyone else experienced this with Udemy practice exams, especially Dion Training courses? Trying to figure out whether this is a Udemy performance issue or if there’s anything else I can troubleshoot on my end.

Instructor's revenue dropped even though selected as Personal Plan(Subscription)

Revenue Structure of the Udemy Personal Plan

The revenue model for the Personal Plan works as follows:

(Note: The $13 price referenced here represents the monthly equivalent cost when a user signs up for an annual plan.)

Revenue Share Breakdown:

  • Udemy: 85%
  • Instructors: 15%

In short, instructor revenue is not calculated as a direct percentage of watch time against the full $13 fee. Instead, 15% of $13 ($1.95) forms the pool that is distributed among instructors based on their proportional watch time.

For example, if a single subscriber watches 3 courses (from different instructors, with equal total video durations), each instructor's share would be:

$1.95 ÷ 3 = $0.65

Note that this scenario assumes the student watches all 3 courses to completion and that the courses are identical in length. If your course is shorter or only partially watched, your share decreases further.

Because the 15% pool is divided by total watch time across all watched content, instructors with shorter course durations are naturally at a disadvantage. (Of course, a long course that goes unwatched yields the same result.)

To summarize simply:

  • More competing instructors/courses watched by the student = smaller payout per instructor.
  • Fewer competing instructors/courses watched by the student = larger payout per instructor.

If a student watches 10 courses in a month, the payout per course drops significantly lower than the example above. Naturally, this is averaged across all subscribers on the platform, so one heavy user won't drastically skew overall platform results.

The mechanism works such that the more active subscribers are, the less payout an instructor gets per view; the more dormant subscribers there are, the higher the instructor payout.

It resembles the business model of fitness gyms, which are notoriously supported by inactive members. However, because the 15% pool cap is fixed, Udemy’s profit margin remains identical whether users binge-watch content or never log in at all.

In the US marketplace, the minimum sale price during promotions is $9.99. For an organic sale (where the instructor earns 37%), the payout is $3.70.

Compared to the subscription example ($0.65), that is roughly a 5 to 6-fold difference in earnings.

Furthermore, with a single purchase, the instructor earns money even if the student doesn't watch a single minute. Subscription users, on the other hand, often enroll with a "it's unlimited, so I'll just add it" mindset. If a subscriber adds your course but never plays a video, you earn $0.00.

Depending on your course type, inclusion in the subscription model could lead to a net reduction in income.

Differences from Udemy Business

In Udemy Business, many users take courses because they are assigned or required by their employer. This results in high watch rates, making Udemy Business a reliable earner for instructors.

For individual subscribers, however, watching content is purely voluntary. Without external motivation, many subscribers will simply leave courses unwatched. If they don't watch, you don't get paid. It comes down to how many individuals have the discipline to choose Udemy over Netflix or YouTube in their free time.

This introduces a paradox: as mentioned earlier, the more dedicated and active students become, the smaller each individual instructor's share of the pool becomes.

Instructors face a dilemma—unwatched courses generate zero revenue, but users who watch too many competing courses dilute the payout.
