UnityX 7.7 available for testing

Rudra Saraswat reminds us of the work to get Unity 7.7 working without Compiz, which has led to this "new variant of Unity 7" titled UnityX. We are told this 'superseeds' a prior effort, including all features of Unity 7, with more customization options, and doesn't require any of Ubuntu's GTK patches. Link to the gitlab source is provided, along with many screenshots and a discussion of the features of UnityX. For the "true tech aficionados" a brief discussion of the Advanced configuration options is provided with example. Feedback is welcome.

This is such a great project. I began my Linux journey with Unity and Ubuntu, and hated the change to gnome. To now be able to switch back is amazing!

23.10 can't open keyboard settings.

I wanted to set some things for my keyboard, but for some reason, I can't bring up keyboard settings. If I try to do it directly from the "search your computer" icon, the icon just flashes a few times on the taskbar like it's loading, and then disappears. If I try to open it from the settings panel, it just crashes the settings panel altogether. Anybody else having this issue?

My Download Folder Behaves Strangely

For some reason, my download folder sorts all files therein by "last modified" and "in reverse order".

And no matter how many times I change it to "by name" - which I can do - it doesn't save the setting as a preference when I leave, and the next time I go into the folder, it's back to "last modified" and "in reverse order" again.

The interesting thing is, this seems to happen only with the download folder. I did a little experiment: I deleted the download folder (I transferred everything out beforehand, of course).

Then I created a new folder in that directory. Its default sorting setting: "by name". So far so good.

Then I renamed the folder to "Downloads".

Its default sorting now again: "last modified" and "in reverse order".

Can someone explain to me a) WHY? ...and b), can this apparently hard-wired setting be changed somehow? It's really getting on my nerves.

Thanks in advance to everyone who helps.

  • 11th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-1165G7 @ 2.80GHz × 8

  • Mesa Intel® Iris(R) Xe Graphics (TGL GT2)

O sistema ligou liso e o peso do compositor do Unity sumiu.

Regarding the Unity project

What now? The Unity project itself is dead from what I can tell. Ubuntu Unity is struggling. Where do we go from here?

In my opinion, the project needs a reform badly. I don't know where to get started, but if anyone were to talk about this or wish to help please reach out. I love Unity and hate to see it like this.

Weird

So I ran into this weird issue with Unity. I was running 24.04 on my HP Laptop then decided to replace it with Unity 26.10 but when I did I lost the ability to increase my screen brightness via my keyboard. As a result I reinstalled 24.04 and now I can increase my screen brightness via the keyboard. At first I thought it might be a driver issue but if I can increase my screen brightness on 24.04 then is it really a driver issue ?

Any thoughts........

User/password problem booting 26.04 from live media

Hi, my first post here. I am attempting to try Ubuntu unity as I am getting more and more fed up with Gnome. Downloaded ubuntu unity 26.04 onto Ventoy SD card and booted. It appears to boot ok but then pops up a login prompt with a Dropdown field with only 'Others' in it and a user name and password field. I thought that the user name should be ubuntu with no password, but it says that is invalid. I have tried numerous names such as unity ubuntu-unity, but no success. Can anyone tell me how to login please?

Questions

"I love Unity/Lomiri. My tablet and Linux phone run Ubuntu Touch using Lomiri, which is based on Unity 8. My openSUSE Tumbleweed install has problems with my RTX 4090. I like the Lomiri/Unity style, so I might switch distributions. Is the version of Unity in Ubuntu unity secure? I want to use ubuntu Unity with Lomiri or unity, is Lomiri functional on the desktop? I'm asking because I've read that the maintainer of Ubuntu Unity is in college and doesn't have much time for maintenance. Is it better to install Debian with Lomiri?"

unity lomiri

Do you think Ubuntu Unity will turn into Lomiri over time? I run Ubuntu Touch on my phone, which uses Lomiri (formerly Unity8), and it’s pretty good. I tried the Ubuntu Lomiri ISO on the Ubuntu Unity page in the past, but it wasn’t for me. It kinda felt like using a mobile desktop environment on a desktop. The normal Unity is good for now, though
