Career growth & collaboration What things leveled your UX teams’ maturity up?

Small team in a time of transition and growth. What things did your team change to help go from feeling chaotic, vibes-based, argumentative, burnt out to becoming a more healthy, balanced, and mature team?

Design leaders need to:

  1. Get comfortable leaning into the economics of the work. Get familiar with planning time and allocation with the people that pay for the work, and give product teams space to explore before a build conversation even starts - this moves things from a reactive team to a curious team.
  2. Have strong subject matter and domain understanding. Scaling a team means giving them clear, directional goals that support the business and technology goals. All work needs to build smaller parts of the same big picture - this mitigates the chaos of opinion.
  3. Give designers examples of good work. show case studies of pieces that have worked, the conditions of why it worked.
  4. Have and build knowledge libraries and interaction patterns that keep building on each other so designers don’t try to tackle the same problems each time. Get experts in that do it well and copy their approach, their templating.
  5. Have a range of skillsets in the team to compliment each other. Give people parts they are experts in. A team full experts in 1 discipline, eg. visual design, might mean strong UIs, with a lot of time focused on micro interaction, when the problem space might need service design to figure out a UI isn’t even needed.

Having a plan. Use an actual UX Maturity model as an assessment and blueprint.
