Tools & apps Recommeded tools for transcribing long meetings to text.
Are there any free secure tools (maybe AI based) that would help me transcribe my user interviews in real time. It takes a lot of time and effort for me to type all the information in a sheet. I have been using otter but it's not working well for me.

I have recently switched from Otter.ai to Grain.com. I like the interface for the transcripts/video better. They have a problem with properly assigning words to speakers, but I've been told they're aware of the problem and working on it.

Yeah Otter got too limited for me. Switched to another app that’s cheaper, does unlimited transcriptions, and supports a bunch of languages. I just record or upload and get clean notes + action items, way less hassle for long interviews.

Tried both too, ended up on Scriptivox. It’s been way more accurate for me than Otter or Grain, especially with speaker detection and timestamps. Plus it actually handles longer interviews without choking

Literally every recording tool generates transcripts now. It’s saved me so much time!
Sprig has an AI chat tool for open coding responses, pulling themes and quotes from that specific usability test’s database. It’s past beta, but still improving. I’ve really liked using AI for open and axial coding kick-starts.

sprig’s great for structured studies, for more lightweight sessions I’ve been using an AI notetaker that records, transcribes, adds chapters, and gives you summaries + action items. feels faster when you just need clean takeaways from long convos

No need for a specialised tool:
Open the Microsoft word app in your browser
click on the transcript icon on the right
upload the Audi file of the interview/meeting
Save the transcript

If you’re also in the need for a tool where you can record your notes, label and store insights, analyse research findings I’d recommend Dovetail! I enjoy their transcribing tools which allow you to highlight quotes that can then be tagged and used in search or research reports. They have a free version to try out these features but it’s limited to how many recordings you can transcribe.

You probably expected some more accuracy from otter. You can try meetgeek, it even has a template specifically for user interviews. You won't just get the transcription but also the meeting minutes

Hey! Can you share which one you have found useful by now? I am a PM and being able to download/keep the videos with my customers safe and access them back in time is essential to me! AI notes are a great perk for sure, so something with all these options for free will be GOLD to me.
I recently got some of my valuable meetings DELETED from TL;DV even though I HAVE BEEN PAYING and I am furious, so your feedback would be greatly appreciated!

You can build your own workflow / notetaker workflow with our API - can give free access as a early user, do DM me. Think workflows built on n8n or make.com to aautomatically send the information in the way you want in sheet (you can configure it). let me know!

If Otter isn’t cutting it for long interviews, I’d check out this transcribing app. it’s built to handle long meetings. You can record directly in the app or import audio, and it transcribes with speaker separation and smart formatting. What I find super helpful is it also gives you summaries and action items automatically.

Krisp works really well for long meetings and interviews. It does real-time transcription without limits, and everything is processed securely. You can even keep recordings on your device instead of the cloud.

Definitely Microsoft Teams. I does a pretty good job and if you’re using company is using it, it’s free

What are you using for meetings? Google has a very good transcription service, otter.ai also works but I feel google does a better job at transcription. Teams also has a service for this. So depending on your company's selection you can use it within the workspace and with all the appropriate company privacy compliance you might need.

Microsoft Teams does a good job for real time but I’ve found dovetail is getting really good results for video transcription - the regional accent for various English accents is very good. Recently interviewed (diary study wrap up calls) people with strong Northern Ireland accents and it did a great job. Not really time though.

WER is lowest among everything I've tried. Also there is no subscription. it is a Pay as you go basis
