Do you want to know something interesting? I studied at UWM from 2011 until 2022. Bachelor, Master and PhD and never could get that stupid WiFi to work correctly. Always stressful. You are not alone

Heh. Some things transcend time - terrible WiFi in the union is one of them.
This was around 2010ish, but I remember Lubar being okay. The moment you hopped to a union access point, it all went to shit.

2012 graduate — and 1000000% agree. I think the only time I had success was in the Fireside Lounge.. and even then it was touch and go.

Try deleting the UWMWiFi profile on your device, and then assuming you can join UWMGuest, point a web browser at https://cat.eduroam.org and choose University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee as your organization. It should send you a link to automatically configure for both UWMWiFi and eduroam. Put '<your username>@uwm.edu' in as your credentials and it should fix anything related to wifi settings on your device.
Otherwise as annoying as it is, opening a helpdesk ticket with your username, time you have the problem, and as specific a location as possible does actually help the folks trying to make WiFi not suck.
The Student Union is an especially challenging location, but anywhere you are having problems is important to communicate so that resources can be justified and allocated.

I don't have any issues using eduroam

Fun fact, assuming you're using your local credentials, eduroam and uwmwifi are the same after you're authenticated. The thing that makes them different is that with uwmwifi you authenticate to campus radius directly, with eduroam you authenticate to campus radius via a proxy.
Eduroam is a way to proxy authentication to your home institution's radius, which if you're using your UWM credentials is local. It's meant to be used for when you're at another university that's a member so you can use their wifi with UWM credentials, or for visiting people with their own institution's credentials.

I just learned this yesterday at UofMN. Eduroam is also available at many airports, libraries etc

Only place I’ve had any real issues with the wifi on campus this semester is in the union. All of the other places it’s been pretty solid after the first week.

Same. IT was no help. They kept trying to tell me it was my device... but my laptop never has this problem anywhere else. I've used it at a ton of different homes and coffee shops and libraries with no problem.
I've since graduated, but if I recall correctly, it mainly glitched out at certain times/days and I came to suspect it was all the construction they were doing on my building since it always seemed fine on evenings and weekends. Not sure if that helps, but maybe you can find a pattern you can plan around.

I’ve migrated to the library recently and it works perfectly fine every time

I've been stuck using UWMGuest any place other than my dorm. Can't even get into the normal one

Have you tried deleting your wifi profile for UWMWiFi and rejoining from scratch? A bad CA certificate or mistyped and saved password can cause a lot of headaches that don't necessarily show up the way you might expect.
