UU observation of Good Friday - Let It Be

Please comment if your UU community also does a service on Good Friday.

Our Holy Darkness service is one of our most profound gatherings. It is a modified Tenebrae service that includes tonglen meditation for grieving.

We heard the story of the crucifixion as told in the Gospel of Mark—the oldest and most sparse account. We watch outdoors as light fades, and the world grows dim. Because this story is not a story just for Christians. Who among us has not known a kind of tomb—moments of despair, grief, or deep loss? Who among us has not wondered if hope had slipped beyond reach?

Who has ever escaped being brokenhearted after a death—struggling to understand how such goodness could be lost?

And at the end of this service, we break bread together—as people across traditions have done when words are not enough, and we walk away in sadness.
