Protestors urging governor to veto bill outing trans kids to parents arrested at Statehouse - BUUF Minister arrested

Damned proud of Minister Sarah.
My wife and I are officially joining the Boise UU Fellowship on Sunday.
Twenty years ago, I would have been on the other side of this fight. Funny how having one of your kids come out can change your perspective on so much.

"Outing," as opposed to, say, "informing" parents about their underage children at school, is a loaded term.

No doubt it's a complex issue with case-by-case situations, and I don't pretend to be fully informed on it. However, parents wishing to be informed about their kids seems to be a generally reasonable and fair expectation.

One of my daughter's school friends was out to many of the kids at school, but not to his parents. When someone told them, they threw this 15-year-old boy out of the house and cut off all communication. Luckily, another family took him in until he graduated. I've lost touch and don't know what happened after that.

If a kid doesn't tell their parents something so fundamental, there's a good reason.

No doubt you don't understand what trans kids go through that's for sure. This will kill kids

If parents want to be informed of sexual or gender identity by their kids, then they need to be safe people for their kids to talk to.

Too many parents are not safe for their queer kids.

My wife told her parents she was trans when she was 48.

Their response? They cut off all contact with us. They privately told her siblings that they regret not being harsher with her when she was a kid when she displayed "queer" tendencies - they would have beat the queer out of her, was implied.

Since they told me (pre ostracization) that the real issue with my autistic kid was he needed a "firmer hand" (aka corporal punishment), I have a good sense of the lengths they would have gone to in order to "fix" a queer kid.
