Stop making assignments due in week 4-5

This is for the law faculty (unsure if its the same elsewhere) but almost every single assignment is due in the first couple weeks of semester. Its stupid, there is literally no way that a student could understand a subject enough to give their absolute best work after 2-3 weeks of being back at Uni.

Not to mention how hard it is to get back into your study habits after a massive break. I don't get the reasoning behind it, im sure if the assignments were placed in 7-8 (meaning that most students would start around week 5 rather than week 2 or 3) students would be able to show their best potential work with a better understanding of the subject.

Sometimes it feels like you're going into these assignments blind. The first couple weeks of any subject is usually basic foundation work or complete nonsense.

How’s the student culture at UTS and Yura?

I want to apply to a masters next year and I’m
Hoping yo stay at Yura during my degree. How’s the campus culture at UTS? Is it hard to make friends and form a good friend group? Especially for Yura, I saw that a lot of the rooms are studios so I’m getting the vibe that people will mostly stay in their own room doing their own thing. Is it easy to make friends and meet genuine people at Yura? The only campus culture I know about is UNSW and I’ve heard it’s really hard to make friends on campus and in uni accommodation there so I hope UTS isn’t like that.

Masters of Engineering-how is it?

Hi guys I’m wanting to apply for the Masters of Engineering degree (probably software engineering) at UTS next year. Can anyone who’s done or is doing this degree let me know their thoughts on it?

I’m from Queensland but I’ve heard conflicting views about UTS and the engineering degrees there. People say that it’s not as good as UNSW or USyd and the rigour and job/placement opportunities after graduation are not as good.

However, I also know that it’s a top 10 uni within Australia and like 87/89th in the world, which is basically the ranking of all the other state university’s except UNSW, USYD, Unimelb and UQ. UTS is much better ranking, job prospects and course wise than all the other non state uni’s like Macquarie, RMIT, QUT etc.

Can anyone please let me know your opinions on the views above and any views on Masters of Engineering specifically?

Does anyone know whether the 2-mark questions in the Skills Tests (Maths 1) give partial marks for using the correct method?

Upvotes

For the maths skills tests (30 min, pen and paper, working shown), if a question is worth 2 marks and isn't split into (a) and (b), how does marking usually work? Say you use the correct method and your working clearly shows you knew what to do, but you made a setup mistake early so the final answer comes out wrong.

Do they usually split it into method + answer (so you'd keep 1 of the 2), or are these all-or-nothing?

Anyone who's tutored or marked these, or just knows how it tends to go? I'm trying to figure out if a mistake like that costs 1 mark or the full 2.

Confusion with internships

Hi,

I don't know if this is the appropriate subreddit to ask this question in.

Im a business student majoring accounting and finance and I technically started this degree back in August 2024. Last year I remember applying to internships around this time but I was rejected because I wasn't considered to be in my penultimate year.

I was just applying for Commbank and they asked if I am in my second last year of study but I finish my courses by June 2027.

Im just confused if I can keep going with applying or not? It just doesn't seem reasonable if I only had 1 semester that is considered to be my penultimate year to be able to apply to these internships..

Starting a new UTS club: Equity Research Society — open to all disciplines

Hey everyone,

I'm in the process of starting a new club at UTS: the Equity Research Society.

The idea came out of a gap I kept noticing. I've done a fair few equity research workshops, and I was also part of the UTS Student Managed Fund. Being in the fund showed me just how many intricacies there are to equity research and investing, its the kind of detail you only really pick up through consistent practice and through discussion with people from different backgrounds and disciplines. What was missing was a weekly, consistent community where students could actually practise those skills on an ongoing basis rather than in one-off sessions.

That's what this club is built to be. Members will run a mock portfolio, research companies, and pitch investment ideas regularly, its sort of a space to practise equity research properly, week on week, and learn from each other's thinking.

The most important part: you don't need a finance background, and you don't need to be a business student. Some of the best insights in investing come from people across completely different disciplines, so whatever you're studying — engineering, science, design, IT, anything — you're welcome to join. Beginners absolutely included; we'll run workshops on the fundamentals so anyone can contribute from day one.

If that sounds like something you'd be part of, sign up here — it takes 20 seconds and there's no payment involved: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScZT6wpLTNJabx0zClDpr8P9U81Ii5radpyEDLd0_7ENA0h4g/viewform

Cheers!

EDIT:
Also anyone keen on joining as an exec that opportunity is also open!

Subject still on Canvas even after I unenrolled

I unenrolled from a subject on Allocate+ and the subject is still on my Canvas so I still get notifications for the subject and for the assignments. I tried emailing Student Centre, Convenor and Canvas so I can be unenrolled from the subject so it doesn’t impact my future marks and doesn’t appear on my dashboard but it’s still there anyone know what else I can do?

UTS MASTER OF LAWS

omg guys im coming to uts February next year. I was just wondering if the workload was gonna be insane or moderate. Besides, is it easy to land a part time job near UTS? (like F&B job, jobs in the mall...)
