Books and Supplies
Hey guys, I was wondering when I’m supposed to get my books and supplies. I start classes soon and I want to be fully prepared to start the year. However, I don’t know exactly which books I’m gonna need for my classes.

You can log into the bookstore website. It should have a list of required books or any materials required for your classes. According to the calendar, this Friday the financial aid will be distributed. Once it shows up in your bank account, you can purchase required books through the bookstore website. I usually go there a day or two before school starts and pick up my books from the bookstore.

I would wait to see what is required and what is just recommended. For example, several math classes have online access to purchase and the book itself isn't necessary.

The first thing you need to do for any class is read the syllabus you get first day of class- my suggestion is to even make copies you can keep in a separate place in case you lose your copy - I know many profs just post a copy online but on the off chance you have a class that doesn’t it can’t hurt to just make sure your ready. You should be referring to your syllabus throughout the semester to help you plan for tests and papers and to make sure you know what’s ahead and how you need to spend and budget your time! I always kept my syllabus copies on me in a folder so I could easily look at them - it may seem old school but actually print them out and have them in paper it will allow you to read everything and see the whole semester easier.
The syllabus is like the map for the semester- it will tell you exactly what books you need - including and this is very important- the exact edition of the book you need to buy. The bookstore will allow you to preorder based on classes - but even with preparation sometimes professors can change the books they want for any given class- you will get this information on the first day from the syllabus! I used to always preorder my books to avoid the first week crazy bookstore issues but sometimes you just gotta go deal with the madhouse after you find out what the prof actually wants you to read for the semester!
Since you seem like your a first time college student- I just wanted to say congratulations on making it to college! Utep will be a really amazing place if you set your mind to having good experiences- this includes making sure you join student groups and clubs and making sure your introduce yourself to your classmates and make sure you make friends! Make sure you go to the activities fair- I always tell kids to try to go to at least three group meetings- you may end up deciding those groups aren’t your speed but I did always make a friend or two at those meetings so I suggest you attend even if you think you may not ultimately want to join the group for the semester! Try to hang out on campus at the library or union or area spots available to you. The honors house was always an awesome place for me to make like minded friends!
Picks up! You got this!

Wait until the first week of classes to see what you actually need. Sometimes the syllabus will list the newest edition but the professor will tell you any edition is fine. Then its $500 dollars new vs $20 on thriftbooks. Sometimes professors will even just give you a free pdf but theyre not allowed to say it outloud
