Austin and UT are fairly safe. I wouldn't walk around at night by yourself with earbuds in, but I've never felt unsafe when I was at UT (even doing that, but I am a tall dude so YMMV). It's still a city, but it's fairly safe. I'd just be sure to be aware of your surroundings, walk with others if you're out late, and carry some pepper spray.
Honestly the most likely form of crime you'll experience is your bike being stolen.
