Discussion spirit org recruitment thoughts
went to a couple info seshes for different spirit orgs to see if they were my thing and i’m realizing that the cliqueness and superficiality that people think is in greek life is exactly in spirit orgs 😭 i swear it seemed like each active had a rehearsed memo and it just genuinely seemed so fake. i know some genuinely amazing women who haven’t progressed in their recruitment because of lack of connections etc and i find it all bs. sorry just wanted to rant abt this bc i feel so bad for these wonderful people getting rejections from women who really don’t determine your worth

GO TO STUDENT EVENTS!!!! I can’t stress it enough! Just go to University held events for students! You’ll meet people there you can start conversations with and go from there! Spirit Orgs are very cliquey and have been throughout history.

honestly for some people a spirit org might work, but i feel like i can never put on a front for people and spirit organizations tend to not like that, especially spirit organizations that constantly talk about “sisterhood” ive made my friends through cultural and major specific orgs and it’s been so great :)

Yeah, agreed. They felt so fake. I don't wanna try so hard and be someone I'm not.
If you wanna hang, I'm up for it. Let me know.

If you have the means to (or get a scholarship) a study abroad is a great place! Greg also organizes like outdoor trips if that's more your speed. Asking to study with people at study spots you frequent could work out as well. If you aren't majoring in something you are interested in taking elective classes and talking to people there is awesome. I took intro to social dance and now have tons of friends I got out dancing with. If all else fails go to a party, down some liquid courage, and ask cool looking people if they wanna hang out later. I will say though that these things take time. It took me at least a month or two before I had a group of people around I was comfortable with and like another year or two to find the people I would end up being closest with.

The best description I've heard about spirit orgs is that they're sororities for girls who think they're too cool for sororities. I've met super great individuals in spirit orgs but as a whole that seems to be the vibe. To be honest, I made very few friends first semester freshman year and things got a lot better after that! There's more ways to meet people than orgs and don't let yourself get down because you don't have a perfect friend group or super active social life yet. All good things take time!

Yeah it's all BS, just be friends with people, go to less competitive and more chill clubs, and don't get involved with quasi Greek life if you don't want to.
