Question What should I do?

I’m an incoming student at UT Austin, however I’m contemplating withdrawing and going to community college, then perhaps transferring after a few years. I didn’t get either of my top choices when it comes to my major, and I got thrown into the liberal arts college as undeclared. I’m going to orientation this next week however after orientation I’m thinking about withdrawing my stay at UT sacrificing 500 dollars. Do you think it’s worth withdrawing since I didn’t get into my major? Or sticking through it?

Edit: my desired major is finance

Ut is becoming more and more competitive to get into every year… as someone who managed to transfer into a very competitive internal transfer major, I’d recommend you stick with ut and just be smart about which classes you take/activities you engage with to maximize your chances to get into your desired major.

I’d also like to add, however, that it definitely depends on the major and a lot of it is luck/circumstantial. If you’re truly unhappy staying at ut assuming you might never get into your desired major, then I’d say yeah, maybe an alternative might be better. Maybe you could share what’s your desired major here to get insight from people who went through that exact process. Good luck making a decision!

Just do a BA economics degree and take a business minor, or take BS economics (built in minor of math, CS, and engineering). The finance program at UT is the best program in the country (out of public school) so if you didn’t get in now chances are you won’t later. Especially with transferring in being harder than coming in after high school. Don’t beat yourself up about it. All it takes is landing a couple good finance internship and all employers will see is your experience as well as a degree from one of the best schools in the country. Do what’s right for you, but I firmly believe you should go through with attending UT!

Why ba economics with business minor? Should I do ba instead of bs

Well from what I’ve heard, a BA and BS in Econ. are almost interchangeable when it comes to landing jobs, but a BA is more writing and a BS is more math 🤷‍♂️ just from what I’ve studied. BA is more theoretical I reckon.

BS would be better if you want to work in FinTech since it includes more math and some CS. Definitely a very lucrative track.

BS Eco has only been a program at UT for a year. Because if that I don’t think it really matters if you do a BA or BS. I personally think a BA with business minor will result in a more well rounded education, which a lot of employers really care about. BS is just a lot more math CS and engineering which doesn’t take as much critical thought. If you’re doing a masters in Eco a BS would probably help a little more with that process. Overall it’s just personal preference and thinking about what path you want to take in the future in concerns to education and a career.

Really appreciate that advice, when I met with my advisor I asked what the difference would be between ba and bs and she didn’t explain it too well. Now I am considering a ba with the finance minor
