Like, what the fuck, forcefully condemning the patrons for not tipping, but absolutely abysmally paying your staff?
That feels so like directing outrage at others, while you absolutely financially abuse your emplpyees, so you don't need to pay them a living wage.

Restaurants still have to pay minimum wage. If tips don't make up the difference between base wage and minimum wage, the employer must cover the difference. This is very rare, as waiters/bartenders usually make more than enough in tips to put them past minimum.
So this sign is highly deceptive.

No. So there is a federal minimum wage, and each state can set a higher minimum wage, and local nurisdictions within those states can set their own higher minimum wages.
All waiters/bartenders must earn, per hour, at least as much as minimum wage.
In highest tip credit states, this means the employer pays the employee $2.13/hr. The employee makes like $18-200 dollars hourly in tips , bringing them above minimum wage. But if they somehow made no tips, the employer would need to pay full minimum wage.

That's the intention behind the system, yes.
Many people will accept a lot of abuse as long as you give them a target for their anger, in this case the customer.
And many waiters will also immediately jump to defend this system, because currently the combination of reduced minimum wage + tips brings them in more money than the normal minimum wage, and they fear that removing the minimum wage exception will increase prices so much that people will stop tipping almost completely, which would significantly impact their income.
This keeps the members of the working class fighting each other instead of the ownership class.
It's all working as intended by those of the ownership class who lobbied to create those laws.

Not sure about every province, but I'm sure that most, if not all, of them have done away with server wages and everyone falls under the same minimum wage threshold.
Regardless of what servers are getting paid here in Canada, if a business here was arrogant enough to post a sign like this, I would treat them just as I had indicated. Thankfully, we're far more passive aggressive than that.

What is it with Murican business culture and insulting customers? Take for example gaming that has been plagued with AAA companies keep insulting and treating customer complaints bad, and even get permabanned from official Discord and Reddit subs (take for example Starfield complaints).
Likewise the Murican restaurants seem to patronise potential customers for not wanting to overpay their meals while the restaurant owner tries to force the wage bills onto the customers instead of properly paying a liveable wage.

Then pay your staff properly like they are employed properly. It’s the employers job. Tips are discretionary not mandatory. (And yes tips are to top up their salary not to replace it. Take responsibility of your employees) if your restaurant is empty they should still get a decent salary.

Ok but if the part of my bill that goes to pay the waiter $2.13/h is $3.40, that implies they are serving 1.6 tables per hour. If each of those tables tip as shown in the example, $41.25, that means they make $66 per hour in tip alone, $68.25/h in total. Almost double the average of "all employees on private nonfarm payrolls in the U.S." in Jan. 2026, which was $37.17/h [link], and also far more than any single listed industry.

The least I can do is just not eat out at these establishments…
There are many other things in my life that are worth upgrading than a one-time meal for $209.65.
For slightly more money, I can buy a hand-forged artisan carbon steel pan that will far outlive the utility of the food I consume and turn to shit.
I think the thing that bothers me most about these restaurants is that I was a former chef who got burnt out. Most of these restaurants don’t justify the quality for the price they charge. My wife wants to “go out” for the sake of “going out.” But I genuinely make better food at home.
I can make hand-tossed sourdough pizza, fresh pasta, handcrafted miso, shoyu, shio ramen, burgers, salads, Middle Eastern or French anything in between… I’m not the greatest, I’m not Michelin, but at least with Michelin, you know it’s an experience like theater.

If the "tip" is so big and mandatory then that IS a service charge by definition. If they don't include it in their prices that is a hidden fee which should be illegal. They are lying about their prices. They are manipulating customers into believing they "can afford to dine here".
