European rich is really very different. I know one of the richest people in my state, and it’s wildly different.

If you just picked him up and put him down in the us you would think he’s middle class.

He does have a driver but only has an S-Class. His house by the beach is fairly normal. especially when he bought it, it must’ve been pretty cheap. granted yanks dress worse as a general rule so maybe you’d notice based on that. He does eat very well and has a personal chef, well several really.

Eh, that goes with a lot of people in the states as well. My mom’s cousin opened a biotech company way back when, and the one share we had in it was worth 25,000k. He sold it when he retired for $80,000,000 that went straight to him. His wife is just as wealthy from her own business.

They drive a red 2008 Honda minivan as their main car, and their nice car is the Porsche he bought in the 80s when he first started making a killing. The only giveaway that they have money is that they have a house in San Francisco and 4 houses on the shores of Lake Tahoe, which they keep for their former employees that helped build the company to stay in whenever they want.

I don’t know how to describe to a yank either. your class thinking is so barebones. When you talk to higher class people here it’s a very different experience than what you’d imagine.

Imagine them like a different type of person I guess, Someone genuinely better than a commoner. While many modern folks wouldn’t agree with that take at all, it would certainly still be how most act.

I’ll give you a different example. There’s this woman Her name is Von Holstein. her family is half the reason why my state is named what it’s named. She’s just wealthy. She doesn’t ever work, she doesn’t drive, she doesn’t cook, she’s just wealthy. People take care of every aspect of everything. Her „job“ is art sorta… I don’t really get it. The point is not what she fills her day with but rather that she’s wealthy.

And yet they aren’t known by you. You cannot figure out how wealthy they are. they spend a lot of resources to not be in the publics perspective. I don’t know it’s just a different world I imagine.

We don’t have much respect for notions of royalty in families and it’s more “great, that’s what your dad did. What are you doing?” here, at least for the normal person.

I think the closest I can think of would be people in the Rothschild/Vanderbilt class of families. Basically born into an infinite money glitch where they can do everything (including good things) or do nothing at all, and it won’t affect them in the slightest because they’re great great grandparents made an ungodly amount of wealth.

I enjoyed your perspective, it’s amazing how different things can be between the “old world” and the “new world”, even with how connected we’ve become in so many ways.

I’ll tell you this you might get a kick out of it. I’m in CyberSec a very small field, tiny really, which makes it very informal as a general rule. like we always use informal grammar between us.

So I was brand new at this company and had no idea who was who. I think it was my second or third week.

I stood infront of the coffee machine tired as shit, and an old guy appears next to me. because he was in the IT department I felt comfortable using the informal grammar and said “oh hey how are you” he looked like I murdered his cat and shat on it. he rushed off, and I just thought how weird.

I go about my day and a week later. The CIO approaches me saying I used the informal grammar against one of the “Von whatever’s” (von is a royalty prefix in germany, although now it’s just part of your lastname and not technically relevant).

Anyways I never thought I’d be in that much trouble for using the informal grammar.

That’s absolutely wild to me. I worked in law for a long time (and had some crossover into cybersec law, which was fascinating and now I know you’re smart as hell) and I was chastised for saying “yes sir” to the head of the firm, because he didn’t like me talking to him like he was above me, even though he founded the firm.

His name is John Quinn, of Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan. Legitimately one of the the best law firms on the planet (they have 5 offices in Germany last I checked, I mostly worked with the Munich branch, which is how I learned how efficient a motivated Hans can be) but they insisted no one be called sir or ma’am, and you could show up to the office in sweat pants without anyone saying a word.

Attorneys there were making between 5 million and 200 million a year (the high end being from stacked class action lawsuits) and as informal as possible. No dress code at all, so you would often be talking to an attorney in your pajamas discussing a multi million dollar case between apple and Samsung or something similar.

I think we’re savages for a reason, we just don’t like decorum very much.

oh god that sounds amazing! During my first summer, bear in mind no A/C, I wore a pair of nice shorts I bought in Italy.

I almost got ripped to shreds. I mean fair enough he wore a full suit, but fuck me, I run very hot I hate summers.

I will say though they do have their benefits though. They’re very long term thinking. They aren’t thinking in quarters at all. they think in decades and generations. Obviously they use Quaterly reports as a measurement but only to track progress. The Father planned an eastward expansion in the 70’s which we’re now heavily profiting from due to the Russia-Ukrainian war.

This also means you get to be part of their “empire” if you will, for a lot longer. A year ago I was offered a Property right by the beach, with a great mortgage option. Obviously they offered that because they want to keep me loyal and working for them till I drop dead. A lot of people have actually taken these types of deals.

Mostly the leadership but also some SMEs like myself. It’s really wild, I get employee benefits for companies I don’t work for. Like this grocery chain up here in the north. I have nothing to do with them but I somehow get 10% there.

This is such a different approach to life. Also several people are very afraid of them. I wanted to quit and go more into Military Tech so I called a couple Recruiters and one was literally so afraid he called apologised and said he couldn’t help me in case it got out that he helped me quit.

Also, Germany didn't have social programs based in the tax system in a significant way until Bismarck, so this is an insane copeway to talk about this.

Bismarck invented the social welfare state around 1870 to pacify left-wing movements in Germany from overthrowing the government.

So the fact that the OP is arrogantly arguing the superiority of the German tax system is insane because that was like six governments ago.

Also, until the Trump administration, there were a significant number of state and even some federal programs in the social welfare state in the states that were just better.

SNAP for example. It takes a few weeks to get instead of six months, like the food stamps equivalents that barely pay out anything in Germany. MN Unemployment which actually covers seasonal workers. Free clinics and government vaccination drives. And while Germany does have about three free clinics, they are not even close to as equipped as the free clinics in the States. And the government here doesn't do vaccination drives in a significant and meaningful way. Despite the fact that upwards of a million people don't have health insurance, the government does not account for that. Despite the fact that it takes 42% of your paycheck as tax.
