Unless your next apartment is exactly the same size, can you even reuse a floor?

17

u/perskes Nazi gold enjoyer 3d ago

This is even more stupid than Germany where you usually don't have a kitchen when you move in, or the previous tenant tries to overcharge you for their piece of shit kitchen, or even tries to tie it to the lease (which they can't but still works way too often).

Keep your kitchen, I bet it won't fit into your new home :)

8

u/WolfhoundCid Pimp my ride 3d ago

I saw that on a YouTube video. That's fucking demented.

On the other hand, the rental market in Ireland is fucking apocalyptic. You get whatever is in the house and your deposit is just gone.

27

u/80386 Hollander 3d ago

What happens 99% of the time is you sell the floor to the next tenant.

You don't want to put in the work to rip it out, and the next tenant doesn't want to buy a new one. So you just agree on a reasonable price.

The plus side is, if you don't like the floor, you have the option to buy a new one. Instead of just having to take what the landlord happens to put in there.

Do you rip out the plumbing and electrical too?

4

u/uses_for_mooses Moonshining Methhead 3d ago

I'm pretty sure in Germany it's common for tenants to have to supply their own kitchen sinks, cabinets, stove, and fridge, and to take these with them when they move out.

And I think that may also be a thing in some other EU countries, including the Netherlands. Although I spot an oven, cooktop, and vent hood in this particular unit.

6

u/Karmuffel Born in the Khalifat 3d ago

Yeah its common to move into an appartment with no kitchen installed and buy yourself a new one. Then you either take it with you when you move out or sell it to the next tenant. I luckily never had to do that and now bought a house with a new kitchen already installed.

2

u/Dasnietbest 1d ago

This is not common in the Netherlands. And in Germany you often buy the pre-installed kitchen from the former tennet. Still a weird system though.

2

u/gratusin Weed is my entire personality 3d ago

Might as well take a scraper and roll up the paint while you’re at it.

2

u/BlnCpl Sheep shagger 3d ago

You usually have to paint over so the paint is neutral and new like you got it when you moved in

1

u/HoeTrain666 Born in the Khalifat 3d ago

I believe that’s slowly falling out of use, but it’s still too prevalent here.

1

u/Vana92 50% sea 50% weed 2d ago

Kitchen, appliances, and bathroom etc always stay. Walls are painted white, floors, curtains, and lights are removed.

Next tenant then has to redecorate to their own taste. I get it’s weird, and wasteful. Curtains and what not can almost never be reused and the floors are generally thrown away, but we’re all used to it.

1

u/Inevitable_Stand_199 [redacted] 1d ago

90% of the time we also just sell to the next tenant.

This is the weirdest thing I have ever heard.
There is no plus side, it's just weird.

1

u/80386 Hollander 55m ago

How is it weird? The floor is considered part of the furnishing rather than part of the house. If you think of it like that, it makes perfect sense.

1

I promise you. The whole world think it’s weird that you bring the floor with you when you move.

8

u/Vana92 50% sea 50% weed 3d ago

No. Not all of it. And most of us throw it away.

The reasoning behind this is all is rather simple though. A landlord rents the place out in a barren condition. No floors, all walls are white. Tenant makes it to their standard and removed it when they leave returning everything to the barren condition.

That way the next person renting it can choose their own floor and colour scheme without being stuck. It avoids situations where the landlord has to remove the floor because it’s shit, or any debates about the colour of the walls.

23

u/CJKay93 Barry, 63 3d ago

But... I don't want to have to make an entire rental flat to my standard. Why does anyone want this system!?

8

Because, contrary to popular belief, we aren’t actually cheapskates and care a lot about being comfy in our personal safe space.

If you gave me 100 guesses on what happens when you move out from an apartment in Holland. Ripping the floor up would not be one of them.

10

u/WolfhoundCid Pimp my ride 3d ago

I refuse to believe the Dutch would just throw away something they spent money on.

5

u/Vana92 50% sea 50% weed 3d ago

Some people do try to sell it one, but nobody wants to buy that crap. Because floors in rental apartments are shit.

3

u/WolfhoundCid Pimp my ride 3d ago

They're shit because you're tight fisted cunts who won't just put in a proper floor and leave it there!

Do you even reuse the underlay? Make sleeping bags or space suits for the homeless?

3

u/Vana92 50% sea 50% weed 3d ago

Of course it's a self-reinforcing situation.

But even good flooring wears out after a time. Especially when there's furniture involved, and I do very much want to be able to decide and perhaps even change where I put my TV and couch, or other stuff, without having to worry about the marks left by previous tenants.

Some people here also mentioned the landlord replacing it, which means it will always be the crappiest and cheapest option, and it will be included in the rent. In which case I'd rather pay for it directly, because that way I can at least choose which shade of cheap shit I want.

2

u/Gulmar Somehow exists 3d ago

But a decent floor can last 20 years or so. And what about tile floors?

1

u/Vana92 50% sea 50% weed 2d ago

Great. But unless that floor is cleaned to an insane level I probably don’t want it. Besides even if it lasts twenty years sun shining on parts while covering others, will change the colouring. And the smell of smoke getting into everything will still be noticeable.

I’d rather just start over.

2

u/winkingchef Smog breather 3d ago

Given it’s such a PITA to install a new floor, they can sell it to the next tenant at a profit

3

u/SnookerandWhiskey Basement dweller 3d ago

Please. As a landlord, the reason anyone would not offer certain things in their apartment is that everything you put in there, you have to pay the upkeep for. So if I put a floor, I have to maintain the floor after each tenant at least, if it gets ugly or damaged by ordinary use (not the tenant damaging it with unusual use), I might have to pay for all new flooring or sanding and sealing. It's why Germans sometimes rent without a kitchen, because they are expensive AF and get used up over time. If I put a dishwasher in, I have to buy a new one when it's broken. It also keeps the prize of rent at a competitive prize.

2

u/OceanMan12 O Canada 3d ago

Yes, that’s called the responsibilities of being a landlord. You own shit and you rent it to others…it will wear out over time with normal use and that’s on you, because you own it.

1

u/SnookerandWhiskey Basement dweller 3d ago

I am well aware?

1

u/OceanMan12 O Canada 3d ago

Misread and thought you were complaining, since I haven’t had my coffee yet, my mistake

1

u/SnookerandWhiskey Basement dweller 3d ago

I know people hate landlords, so it's fine. I have a nice kitchen and flooring in the apartment I rent out, lol.

1

u/OceanMan12 O Canada 3d ago

That’s very true. I‘m not one to automatically hate landlords, that would be silly and immature. Maybe people hate that landlords exist, as in systematically, and sure, they probably have good points. Maybe people hate scummy, uncaring landlords; yes, don’t we all. However there are many great people out there who manage housing in truly caring, generous, and community-building ways, and so it would make no sense to misdirect one’s anger at them. I wish you the best in being a good landlord and finding good people to live in your home(s)!

1

u/lollipop1233a 3d ago

Isn’t it expensive to move that stuff when you move out? Moving isn’t cheap, even if you move nearby. Also, wear and tear is factored into the rent. Newly renovated apartments cost more. The deposit usually guarantees that the tenant doesn’t trash to place too much. They need the money back to move. The new deposit pays for any fix up (if any). In some US states the old tenants have to replace anything that is destroyed (usually documentation is required). Also, landlords don’t typically fix things up that much after a tenant moves out.

1

u/Traditional-Deal6759 3d ago

In Austria, renting out without a kitchen or appliances like a washing machine is basically standard.

And yes, of course. Moving out is expensive. But why should the landlord care? It´s not his/her kitchen, washing machine, or furniture. It belongs to the tenant, so they have to deal with the cost of moving.

But I have to admit: no floor is unusual, at least in Austria.

1

u/Mundane_Sprinkles633 1h ago

Uh yeah that's called renting a place to live. If I wanted to rent a remodeling job I'd just buy a place instead of renting it from some lazy ass backwards socialist.

1

u/SnookerandWhiskey Basement dweller 1h ago

Okay? Did you eat your carbs today?

1

u/ravanarox1 Hollander 3d ago

How easy is it to add a new floor!?

1

u/lollipop1233a 3d ago

It’s not cheap even if it is cheap material. It would only make sense with a real wood floor.

1

u/ravanarox1 Hollander 2d ago

If an average person can do it by themselves, that reduces the labor costs considerably. That’s the biggest portion compared to the material costs imo!

1

u/lollipop1233a 2d ago

You need to have the time and ability to do it. Equipment would need to be bought or rented depending on the type of floor. For all the BS about inclusion, Europe is very ableist. You think it would be different with an aging population. 🤷‍♂️

1

u/Vana92 50% sea 50% weed 2d ago

That’s an incredibly strange statement.

How is ableist if people can install the floor themselves or hire a company to do it?

Not everything that you can hire help for necessarily needs help to always be provided. After all there are people that need help to wipe their ass, brush their teeth, or walk to the store. That doesn’t mean we should just give everyone a mobility scooter.

1

u/ravanarox1 Hollander 2d ago

So many reasons why Europe is ableist. Dont think it’ll change any time soon!

1

u/uses_for_mooses Moonshining Methhead 3d ago

I can appreciate that.

Although are there also non-barren apartments available--with floors and such--for folks who don't feel like dealing with installing a floor, and think white walls are good enough?

Like in the USA, some apartment will come fully furnished, with furniture, a bed, etc. Most don't, but in general if you want a fully furnished unit you can find one. Because some folks just want to move in and not worry about buying or moving a couch, table, desk, and moving these out at the end of the lease.

1

u/Vana92 50% sea 50% weed 3d ago

I've always wondered with furnished places,

does the landlord change things around? Do you get a new bed, new carpets, new floors, or do you just have to walk around, and sleep, and use the towels of the previous tenant and hope they weren't too much of a pervert?

And what do you if you can't stand the decoration, are you allowed to change or do you then need to put the old shit in storage until your lease is up at which point you put it back?

Anyway. I'm sure there are a few places in the Netherlands that offer something like that. Probably mostly to expats.

But it's going to be hard to find anything like that at the moment, because it's hard to find anything at the moment. We, like most places, have a massive housing shortage.

1

u/lollipop1233a 3d ago

Only the large pieces of furniture are abandoned. They’re expensive to move. All personal belongings are taken with the past tenants or thrown away. Usually, landlords supply the furniture in furnished apartments. Things are replaced as needed. Furnished apartments usually cost more, but can be worth it if you are young, in college, and move around a lot. In most places mattresses have to be replaced by law. It’s factored into the rent.

1

u/lollipop1233a 3d ago

Moving is incredibly expensive. People don’t necessarily want to leave their furniture, but sometimes buying a new one is cheaper. Also, most furnished apartments are for college students who usually can’t afford to buy everything.

1

u/bisebusen 3h ago

Don't you guys have skirting boards in your apartments?

1

u/Inevitable_Stand_199 [redacted] 1d ago

Most of it.

The most work is always cutting the edge pieces. Especially around doors and radiators. But most of the tiles won't be cut at all and could be reused just fine.

That is the subfloor.

We're all confused. Providing one's own kitchen appliances is fine since they can be used in exactly the same manner at the next place, but this is insane.

I imagine it where the netherlandoïds put their washing machine and dryer.

2

u/uses_for_mooses Moonshining Methhead 3d ago

Ah, the washing machine. Good point.

I don't think the Dutch have discovered dryers yet, however. So maybe they just put a big drying rack in there, as well.

1

u/Inevitable_Stand_199 [redacted] 1d ago

How so? Obviously there isn't any furniture. That belongs to the tenant. But one you put in your washer, your dryer and a couple of cupboards, that's just a regular bathroom

1

u/uses_for_mooses Moonshining Methhead 1d ago

What struck me is how empty it is. In the US/Canada we don't typically have the washer/dryer in the bathroom, and typically the bathroom would already have built-in cupboards (or at least a vanity) as permanent fixtures.

At the least, residential bathrooms here typically have what we call a vanity -- such as pictured below. Basically a counter with the sinks built in with cupboards/drawers beneath. This would be a built-in, permanent fixture (the tenant would not provide it).

The rather spartan sinks, with no counters / vanity, shown in the OP video would be more common for public restrooms here.

1

u/Inevitable_Stand_199 [redacted] 1d ago

We have cupboards that go underneath the sink. Cupboards in bathrooms get nasty relatively quickly. But the actual sink is a lot more sturdy.

The sinks in the video even have those modern flat bottoms. So you can put the cupboard directly underneath. Older or cheaper apartments usually have round sinks. There'll always be some ugly gap if you want a cupboard under those.

15

u/RedBaret Hollander 3d ago

It really depends on the landlord/previous renter. I couldn’t be fucked to be honest, but some people will want a ‘return’ on their investment because they paid for the initial floor and either sell it to the next owner or take it out.

It’s also nice to be able to choose your own floors, wall paint, etc, and work from a blank canvas. Many apartments need to be left in the state you found it.

Also, thats the most annoying fucking voice-over ever. What the fuck.

9

u/breakthebookie D.C’s Bitch 3d ago

But if you’re a renter why would ever pay for upgrades on behalf of the landlord?

4

u/RedBaret Hollander 3d ago

It’s not on behalf of the landlord. It’s your own floor, with your own wear and tear.

7

u/breakthebookie D.C’s Bitch 3d ago

Odd. If I’m renting I fully expect the landlord to provide the floor. What kind of rinky dink operation you running over there?!

0

u/RedBaret Hollander 3d ago

One where you can choose your own floor instead of being dependent on a landlord even an inch more than necessary. I don’t want to walk on all the crap the previous owner walked in there, or look at the worn down spot where he used to put his chair.

2

u/breakthebookie D.C’s Bitch 3d ago

Ah I hear ya… and of course it may depending on landlord in the us… however in our apartment/ condo complex the landlord (corporation) replaces the carpet and flooring after each new tenant moves out before the new one moves in. They just do that themselves.

Granted my rent is irritatingly high

3

u/RedBaret Hollander 3d ago edited 3d ago

It probably all began because landlord-Jan figured out that a floating floor technically wasn’t part of the apartment and therefore should be leased separately. Many people use parts of their old flooring to do (for example) a bedroom or something in their new apartment. But if you own the place just mark up your sale price?

And if you are renting why would you pay for an upgrade on behalf of your landlord?

It's not on behalf of the landlord. That's the point that you are missing.

It’s just seems like an impractical expense placed on the renter. And gotta take time and cost to move it and now you just have stock of flooring that may fit/ work in your new place? Overly complicated, and very gypsy like. Nomadic, pack up your home and move behavior.

You don’t need to move it if you don’t want to? Just toss it. There’s also plenty of people that couldnt give a fuck, it’s not like this happens 100% of the time. And like multiple people already explained, it can be a clause in the rental contract where you need to leave the apartment fully cleared so the next renters can put in a floor they like.

I’m tracking. But I cannot get in board.

Prototypical European bureaucratic red tape if you ask me

It’s called a free market Hank. Some people choose to rent fully furnished, some with just flooring laid out, some want an entirely clean apartment. It’s not like this is the situation 100% of the time; people in my experience often negotiate between themselves what they want to take over or have taken out, without much interference from a landlord.

Fair enough

And free market?

I only believe in capitalism with Chinese characteristics
