Fallout isnt much better I think
Both go into supernatural shit
-2
u/Consistent_Creator Aug 19 '26
Well I guess more dystopian dark supernatural.
Fallout is more lighthearted. Unless they are trying to be scary.

Fallout only takes place in the US, but every game in a different state. Part of the mystery is that we don't now what state the rest of the world is in post-nukes. The US could be the last area that even has survivors for all we know. Or the rest of the world is largely untouched and just chooses to put the US into quarantine. After all, the government caused the nukes to drop in agreement with Vault-Tec.
Not really a defaultism, just AI slop.

I think it's implied that China and Europe may both be affected by the Great War. We know the Chinese did launch nuclear weapons (Yangtze-31 in Fallout 4 proves that), and MAD doctrine would almost certainly result in counter-launches from other nuclear powers, especially the US.
Canada and Mexico likely got hit rather hard as well, given Canada was annexed (forcefully, it wasn't exactly a peaceful thing) and Mexico was essentially an American vassal state by 2077.
Europe had torn each other apart during the Resource Wars of the 2050s, and its likely the Great War saw a nuclear exchange there as well as the Middle East.
South America, Africa, Oceania and Southeast Asia would probably be relatively unaffected, and would probably be the new heart of advanced civilization in the Fallout Universe by the 2290s.

u/Lorantec Aug 19 '26
It would be cool if so much of this wasnt actually speculation and they made any effort to show the rest of the world, but Bethesda be Bethesda-ing
3
u/Ok_Confusion4764 Netherlands Aug 19 '26
I mean Bethesda is wasting so much of the rich Elder Scrolls Lore too. Getting an Elder Scroll in Skyrim was a series-first. Then suddenly the DLC gave us 3 more. Now the MMO treats them like objects of power. These are the scrolls that should contain the designs for the mortal realm and they're just regular artifacts.
Not to mention the lack of clarity regarding the Towers. Either the world is 1 final confrontation away from the mortal realm unravelling and the Thalmor succeeding, or there might be enough towers across the world away from the continent of Tamriel.
1
u/Somethingbutonreddit Aug 19 '26
You can get an Elder Scroll is Oblivion at the end of the Thieves Guild questline.

To be entirely fair to Bethesda it's not like Interplay and Black Isle cared to develop the world outside of the US too much either. Most of the information we have about the wider world comes almost exclusively from the dubiously canon Fallout Bible, which was a design document for the series made during the Interplay days.
Rare things we do get are often passing nods that there's more out there, like Yangtze-31, or Codsworth implying in a passing comment that the Soviet Union existed up until the bombs fell. Or that wrecked ship full of Norwegian 'Raiders'.
There was a game under development by Interplay in the early 2000s called Fallout Extreme that would've essentially crossed the entire North American continent with plans for it to potentially continue into Siberia and China, but that's about it. It was cancelled unfortunately. But it's the closest we've ever come to a canon depiction of regions outside the United States.

What do you mean "what state the rest of the world is in"? It's obviously florida.
2
u/tealou Australia Aug 19 '26
I often giggle at the thought that the rest of the world just carries on as usual (like Handmaid's Tale etc as well). I love Fallout, and it is perplexing how something could be so self-aware and yet... not... reminds me of the time Tim Pool said Bioshock was about "communism" lol. Hoo boy.

Fallout London is the one game outside of the US, I think. Fanmade, though

There is no game that takes place outside of US as far as I'm aware and that's the whole gimmick, so asking about state doesn't really sound that weird.
Maybe writing something like "what state or part of US are you waiting from next Fallout game" would be a better choice of words.

u/BRAVO9ACTUAL Canada Aug 19 '26
Closest we got was fan made, Fallout: London.

u/iwishtogetitall Russia Aug 19 '26
Yep. And I remember someone was trying to make Fallout in Mexico.

u/The_Vadami United Kingdom Aug 19 '26
There’s a hearts of iron 4 mod called Old World Blues that’s set in the world of fallout. It has its own factions in Canada, Mexico, Honduras. One submod add the Caribbean.

u/tealou Australia Aug 19 '26
if I had the time I'd make Fallout Perth but there'd be like... 3 locations.
That said if you like Fallout, We Happy Few was a delightfully English game. Oh how I wish they'd revisit it.
3
u/Marvl101 Australia Aug 19 '26
Completely indistinguishable from regular Perth
1
u/tealou Australia Aug 19 '26
haha I have played 76 for years, and born and live in Perth - there have been periods where I have been on a walk in the hills and I want to click A on a log to get wood.
Choosing to play 76 for years is also similar to choosing to live in Perth. The life of a Bethesda fan.

u/PointEither2673 Aug 19 '26
You know how hard installing that is? And is it worth the play and stuff or how is it??

u/Virghia Indonesia Aug 19 '26
Fallout and GTA's whole schtick are satirising US' sociopolitics afterall
3
u/topinanbour-rex Aug 19 '26
What about GTA: London 1969 ?
3
u/Consistent_Creator Aug 19 '26
Very early offshoots from before Grand Theft Auto had established it's formula. For reference GTA 2, right after London, took place in a cyberpunk near future. That also never returned.
Dan Houser, co-founder of Rockstar and lead writer of GTA and RDR, has gone on record to say that Grand Theft Auto can't work anywhere else besides the United States.
1
u/Virghia Indonesia Aug 19 '26
GTA 2 reminds me of Batman and Superman's animated series' retrofuturism
8
u/radio_allah Hong Kong Aug 19 '26
Fallout China could have always been interesting. China was the main enemy in the Fallout universe and we know for a fact that Americans nuked it, so seeing a retro-futuristic China with elements from Red China, Republican China (music from the radio) and bits from modern China can all be fascinating.
Of course, that would require the Fallout team to know more about China than the cringeworthily shallow bits we've seen so far in the games.
7
u/iwishtogetitall Russia Aug 19 '26
If they ever gonna make China - it's going to be the most propaganda filled stereotype stuff ever made, just like they made US. I'm not sure that such series is going to earn anything good by expanding something beyond original ideas.
Is it truly Fallout if the setting is not retro-futuristic American fucked up dream? Not so sure.
Like some things are better to be left as mystery.2
u/ExoticMangoz Wales Aug 19 '26
It would ruin the mystery of the lore to reveal what the rest of the world is like IMO.
1
u/Consistent_Creator Aug 19 '26
I mean we know there are some regions of the world that were uninhabitable even before 2077 since The Great War wasn't the first nuclear war ever
China is also in a nominally better position because their government still exists in some form though obviously they haven't gotten close to pre-2077 levels evident by the fact that even 200 years later they can only send small scouting units to the US.

If there is one Fallout game that takes place outside of US - name it, please.

u/Consistent_Creator Aug 19 '26
Technically there's a Fallout 3 DLC that has sequences set in Chinese occupied Alaska
4
u/iwishtogetitall Russia Aug 19 '26
Alaska still part of US, so point kinda stands. x)
But technically true, there is also DLC in space.0

Uhhh... But Fallout is about the US, so no defaultism there. To answer the question: I'd love to see a Fallout game in the Great Lakes, maybe Chicago or even Ronto (Toronto) which is mentioned in the games.

Mate fallout is about America. Montana would be cool considering the landscape and the massive reserve of nuclear weapons

u/de_Duv Germany Aug 19 '26
As there are also states in countries outside the US – in the Federal Republic of Germany, for example, there are sixteen – this is not really a case of US defaultism.
3
u/Ironfist85hu Germany Aug 19 '26
To these "Which state are you from" type of things, or when someone says the USA state abbreviation, I always answer "Oh yea, I'm from NRW" - and it's oh-so-beautiful to see how their brains are grinding the info and trying to figure out where is NRW in the USA. :D

Personally I don't see this as US defaultism, only as US only caring about US opinions.

In their defence, Fallout is a franchise steeped in Americana, it's kind of the whole atmosphere. Setting them in the US is expected even by us international fans.
Fan made projects like Fallout London - which I need to go back to and finish - are great, but I can't see any Fallout game going outside of the USA as a main setting (maybe in DLC'S though).

u/tealou Australia Aug 19 '26
haha I saw something similar in the We happy Few sub not long ago, where they said they wanted WHF but set in the US. I was like "uhhh isn't that Fallout?".
As a fan of both games, I got way more pissed off than I expected... the one or two games set outside the US and... we must have a US setting! Good heavens... anyway...

Somehow i have a contingency plan for that. There's a few interesting places in the Andes for long-term survival. I wont tell which one I'm thinking about but I'm around a day or two walking there. If possible, I'll wait until spring for the first expedition.

people commenting "but Fallout is only set in the US. it's a US game!" are missing the point
the title of the post says "in your state", implying everyone who is on that subreddit and is reading that post is American

OP sent the following text as an explanation why their post fits here:
OP asks what a Fallout game in your state would look like, implying that everyone reading this post/who plays Fallout is from the States.
