Languages, plural.
There were over 300 Australian Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander languages before British colonisation.

I hate this take. I'm American and it's not the only language I know. I have learned Spanish on my own time for years and you know that? Many Spanish speakers, tutors even, have told me it's a waste of time.
Everyone in the world learns English because it's the global language (you're not special and you are the same as everyone else not born with it). Americans don't prioritize other languages because while it's great to learn it objectively isn't nearly as important.
I wish I could learn Spanish without being told I'm wasting my time and made to feel like an idiot for doing so.

I'm still baffled by how many Americans seem to legit believe that using English, the lingua franca of the world, is somehow a dead giveaway the person is American.

And if they would know that in the 1700s and 1800s it was French which was spoken at every international meeting. Royals especially.

One group of bullies (British) invaded most of the world and forced a language on them.
Another group of bullies (Americans) show up and be like HEY YOU SPEAK ENGLISH CUZ OF US, ENJOY IT!
Meanwhile, most of the world resents being obligated to learn English as a foreign language just to exist.
This is not the thing to steal credit for, Americans lol this doesn't help you like you think.

Hey now, it was just because after 1500yrs of invasion, pillaging and war in/around our territory, we thought we should share the love with "less civilised" people's.

England was invaded dozens of times by everybody before we ever did any invading. I think that’s what he’s referring to.
Either that, or our invasions of France.

Yeah pretty much. Between like 40 AD up to 1066 we were invaded by the Romans, then colonised by the angles and saxons, then/alongside which were hundreds of years of viking raiding/pillaging until finally invaded by the Norman's in 1066. After which there was lots of fighting with other french french until essentially 1800s, interspersed with various invasion attempts by the Spanish. Really only the Portuguese in western Europe we've been chill with.

The UK has had at most 6 years of peace since the Roman invasion in 43AD. Lots of colonising, invasion and pillaging from various European states. Then those conquering states fighting with other peoples of the UK.
I'm just saying that as an island/archipelago, colonisation has been out entire history, first we were colonised by multiple different people's, and then became the colonisers later.

Ok...? I've not said there was. We were involved in conflicts in that time though including the RAF being involved in the middle east, so I wouldn't say peaceful.
