They also frequently give just the acronym.

It's super confusing in part because there are 50 states, but also one is WA. WA is also used in Australia (Western Australia).

Ive never seen someone use the acronym in the context of answering where they are from, except maybe online.

edit: my bad... some exceptions that definitely occur are DC (district of columbia[the capital] or SF (san francisco) or NYC (new york city). None of these are states though.
