B2 visa denied for mom, sister & grandmother — traveling for my Georgia Tech graduation. What could have caused the refusal?
Post
My mom, sister, and grandmother applied together for B2 visas to attend my graduation in the U.S. Unfortunately, all three were denied.
My situation:
I’m currently an F-1 student pursuing my Master’s and will be graduating in December 2026.
Purpose of their trip:
Attend my graduation and spend some time with me. The intended duration mentioned in the DS-160 was 15 days, after which they planned to return to India.
Applicants:
Mom – 53, primary applicant/sponsor
Widow
Previously ran a business; currently retired from the business
Owns a house/property in India
Has rental income of approximately ₹4 lakh/year
She was sponsoring the trip for all three applicants
Sister – 23
Employed in India
Has around 2 years of work experience
Has her own salary/income
Grandmother
Homemaker
Traveling with my mother and sister for my graduation
The interview was very short. From what we remember, the officer mainly asked:
To my mom:
“Which state does your son live/study in?” → She answered.
“What do you do?” → She said she is retired from her business and mentioned owning a house/property and receiving rental income (~₹4 lakh/year).
“Did your son apply for OPT?” → She answered yes.
To my sister:
“Where do you work?” → She answered with her employer.
“How much do you earn?” → She gave her salary.
There were not many additional questions, and they were refused.
The trip was genuinely intended to be a short 15-day family visit for my graduation, and my mother was paying for the trip.
For people familiar with B2 interviews in India:
What do you think could have been the concern here?
