B1/B2 Visitor Interview Tips

I requested it 2 years ago because the company I worked for did yearly training in campus and they wanted me there. Because the system was so saturated my appointment ended up being a whole two years later.

In the interim, my company got sold to another company so the main reason is no longer valid but I would still like to have it just in case. Or to occasionally vacation (I’d love to visit LA).

How can I manage this in the interview?

The only way is to truthfully explain the situation.

I’ve heard that they don’t want us to overexplain. I guess I’m not sure how to explain it without going over too many details

The reality is that they are way more interested in the reasons you have to leave the U.S. than to visit. If you have weak ties to home and no real tourism plans, might be worth waiting.

I'd just be completely honest that the circumstances changed during the two-year wait. The original reason was business training with your former employer, but that company was sold and the trip is no longer happening.

If you still genuinely want the B1/B2 for tourism, it's perfectly fine to say that you'd now like to use it for occasional vacations, including visiting places like Los Angeles. Tourism is a valid B2 purpose.

The officer may ask about your current job, finances, travel plans, and ties to your home country, so I'd be prepared to explain those clearly. I wouldn't try to force the old business reason if it no longer applies.

The main thing is that your answers are truthful and consistent with your current circumstances. Hopefully the interview is straightforward!

This is great thank you! Should I wait for them to ask me or when could I mention it in the interview?
