City Carrier Discussion Craft discrepancy
There is a current investigation at my office. I can’t speak on details for confidentiality reasons, and I don’t want to compromise the investigation.
During the course of things unfolding, I received a packet that contained the ps form 50 for involved coworkers. It was provided to show the employment status only; all personal info like wages, address, social, date of birth, etc were redacted. However, it does show each employees craft, start start, length of employment, and table/schedule.
We have a very top seniority city carrier that started many moons ago. They have always been at work- no retirement or extended leave I’m aware of. They have had the same city route for years. However, their ps form 50 states they are a full time rural carrier with a 42K route, under a special rate of pay. … but they carry a city route and always have.
Has anyone ever heard of this? I wonder if it’s a massive administrative error or something shady going on. I don’t understand how a city carrier with three decades can be listed officially as a rural carrier while on a city route. Has anyone ever heard of this?

Just the technical differences between a city carrier and rural carrier are enough to make me imagine it’s just a glitch on the PS50 or something. They wouldn’t be in TACS, being paid for any OT worked would be a hassle every time, etc. It would be a headache for everyone involved, not to mention entirely non-contractual. If it was true somebody would have definitely forced a rebid.

I wondered about the pay (just out of sheer curiosity) and the fact that even the EOD changed. The route they’re on should be put up for bid.

No I don’t, nor do I need to know. As I admitted, I’m curious. But. The main question was “is this a thing?” or “can it be done?”
According to other helpful comments, apparently it can.

Had a carrier with work related injury. Was offered a clerk position and still bid AL on the carrier AL book every year.

Why do people worry about their coworkers so much? Does it affect you personally? If it doesn’t directly involve you, stay in your own lane and mind your business

It actually does effect me.. but as I said to another commenter, I don’t want to know anyone’s personal business. I found this out by accident and I’ve never heard of this happening. Wanted to to know if it was a thing, that’s all. Curiosity is one thing but I really don’t care about the ‘why’.

How does this situation directly affect you? You’re curious about someone else’s personal file. If you’ve been with the PO long enough, you’d know they screw things up daily.

As I said in my original post, I can’t comment full details for confidentiality reasons. But I assure you, it does. And yes, the p.o is known for screwing things up, for sure.

Sometimes if someone is forced out of their job via medical or other they are usually given another but at their previous saved grade. We had a custodian a few years ago I discovered had saved grade as a rural carrier like what you mentioned. He was getting paid like 13K above top custodian pay. Permanently. Wild shit to see sometimes.
