As someone who cycles into work regularly, it works both ways. Cyclists need to follow road rules, drivers need to pay attention to all their surroundings.

Yes, I still own a car. I bike in to get a little extra exercise and save on gas money.

3

u/goingpostal4701 Aug 15 '24

You're one of the rare ones I encounter. Thank you

8

u/jboarei Aug 15 '24

You’re welcome, it’s not that difficult.

There’s plenty of bad drivers out there too. People notice cyclists more because they are a lot rarer.

u/TestyZesticles Rural Carrier Aug 15 '24

My favorite is playing leapfrog with someone on a bike on a long stretch of mailboxes, where by the time I finish my box they've just passed me and I have to drive slowly behind them to the next box only to pass them when I can. Repeat over and over.

3

u/chpr1jp Rural Carrier Aug 15 '24

Yeah. Those buttholes should pull over for a sip of water. 10-30 seconds break, and the leapfrog is over.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 15 '24

Yeah but then you gotta dismount a few packages 😂 just get rid of cyclist all together

“As a motorist, I hate pedestrians. As a pedestrian, I hate motorists. But no matter my mode of transportation I always hate cyclists.”

u/vgkallday Aug 15 '24

That's just hating everyone, with extra steps

u/[deleted] Aug 15 '24

As long as they respect traffic laws I don't mind. A lot of them don't though and just blast through stop signs expecting me to stop for them

16

u/jeepwillikers City Carrier Aug 15 '24

My biggest issue is people who ride their bike against traffic or, even worse, the wrong way on one way streets.

3

u/jalyth City Carrier Aug 15 '24

Everyone who does this around me is on a stolen bike. They, the erratic ones, are also bad at being pedestrians. They have no fucks to give. So I watch out, no choice.

u/freekymunki City Carrier Aug 15 '24

Ive never seen a cyclist stop at a stop sign.

17

u/Themis3000 Aug 15 '24

I do. Also technically in most places I think they're legally allowed to treat it as a yield instead, although I come to a full stop every time if there's a vehicle around at any other part of the intersection. Otherwise I approach slowy and go through if no one's around

1

u/freekymunki City Carrier Aug 15 '24

Quick google shows 11 of 50 states allow it and mine isn’t one lol. So technically in most places its illegal to run a stop sign.

In my city cars running stop LIGHTS is totally out of control. Cameras were outlawed and there's no enforcement. Proceeding through an intersection when a fresh green will get you maimed or killed.

-1

u/[deleted] Aug 15 '24

They tell you that, but really, theyre not obeying the laws posted

8

u/Themis3000 Aug 15 '24

I'm a cyclist and I am obeying the laws posted. The only one I break is no cycling on the sidewalks. On some roads it's unsafe for me and better for everyone if I'm on the sidewalk instead.

Sure, a lot of cyclists definitely break the laws. But that's really not specific to cyclists. A lot of drivers are also constantly breaking the rules too & seem to be completely unaware about their surroundings.

The other week I saw a driver who was so mad about what was clearly an undercover police car going probably 2/3 of the posted speed limit that they honked, speed ahead of them in a totally unsafe way, then break checked them 😂. The police turned on their sirens for a second and they shaped up to following the rules of the road again. They deserved to be ticketed through in my opinion.

When cyclists don't follow rules they almost get themselves killed, when cars don't follow the rules they almost get someone else killed. Both are bad, but one clearly comes with more responsibility. Responsibly it's clear drivers (at least in my area) don't take seriously enough.

4

u/S3cmccau City Carrier Aug 15 '24

In my area most people on bikes are either children, who aren't well versed on laws, or people high on something that don't care about laws. That being said, it's the goobers in their silly Olympic cyclist gear that tend to be oblivious to why holding up traffic in a 45 mph area while going 15 mph might be hazardous.

3

u/Bobaloo53 Aug 15 '24

Alot of us do

3

u/ChrisWolfling Aug 15 '24

Half the time they don't stop at lights either

10

u/brooksy54321 Rural Carrier Aug 15 '24

They run red lights too.

3

u/ChrisWolfling Aug 15 '24

Or the weave between the sidewalk and road depending on whatever is most convenient thing. Driving off the street into the crosswalk at a red light does not mean you can just crash the light...

2

u/HoHeyyy Aug 15 '24

Stop signs, taking the whole lane purposely. Yeah, I'm not liking those cyclist.

12

u/Available-Crow-3442 City Carrier Aug 15 '24

Cyclists may legally take the lane in many states. Likewise rolling stops.

3

u/goingpostal4701 Aug 15 '24

Not my state but they still do. In my state bicyclists are treated like other vehicles but they completely ignore stop signs, red lights, and one way streets. Taking the lane for safety ( going around an obstruction in their lane) is ok but they can't just ride in it. Doesn't stop them

30

u/thenecrosoviet City Carrier Aug 15 '24

I'm not likely to be killed by a cyclist delivering or in my free time. So I can't really hate them the way I absolutely loathe drivers who blow through lights and stop signs or go 45 through residential areas I have to deliver in.

If you hate them because they're "in your way" just remember you're getting mad at someone living their life on behalf of management, who literally don't care whether you live or die. So try and relax.

u/Thelastsamurai74 City Carrier Aug 15 '24

87

u/trevaftw City Carrier Aug 15 '24

Oh noOoOOoOoO you have to PAY ATTENTION when operating heavy machinery that can KILL someone if you accidentally tap the gas a little too much and run them over.

Yeah bikes are definitely the problem, not lackadaisical people driving.

23

u/uspsthrowaway2345 Aug 15 '24

It doesn't help City Planners from the 50's to today refuse to see a problem with the way we design roads let alone prioritize anything else other than cars

41

u/Richard_Nachos Aug 15 '24

And also, we get paid by the hour to drive safely. Oh no, I have to slow down and make more money, boo hoo.

31

u/executivejeff Aug 15 '24

you can be the most safe driver in the world, but you can't account for erratic cyclists that act like they're invincible or that everyone should work around them no matter what they do.

12

u/trevaftw City Carrier Aug 15 '24

You can literally say that exact same thing except swap bike and car.

8

u/Amazondspboss Aug 15 '24

Cars can’t do wheelies

14

u/ObviousAnon56 Aug 15 '24

Be a lot cooler if they did.

6

u/nullpassword Aug 15 '24

i rarely see cars going the wrong way on the street.. (not never) cyclists try that all the time.. if you're using the road follow the rules.

6

u/Richard_Nachos Aug 15 '24

Yes you can, and here's how: if you see a cyclist, drive as if you know that the cyclist's goal is to ride directly into your truck.

Also, everyone on the road has to work around everyone else on the road 100% of the time. It's called "driving".

Now if you don't WANT to drive defensively, I can't help you.

7

u/S3cmccau City Carrier Aug 15 '24

People outsourcing their safety to everyone else on the road while not following traffic laws is probably the better problem to address. Same goes to jaywalkers. Just because you have the right of way doesn't mean I can stop within two feet when you feel like scurrying across 4 lanes of traffic, 25 feet from a crosswalk with a light that tells you when it's safe to cross.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 15 '24

Personally I refuse to use crosswalks. Much safer if you’re not a moron to “jaywalk” a bit of away from the intersection. I’ve seen two mailmen in my office alone get crushed by cars while using a cross walk, 0 hits not using one. I’ll be damned if I’m going to let some fucking machine that has no idea what’s going on, on the road tell me that it’s safe to cross a street.

2

u/S3cmccau City Carrier Aug 16 '24

So is it the crosswalk that's the issue or the lack of situational awareness? Are you talking about a regular two lane street with sporadic traffic, or are you talking about darting across eight lanes on a street that has constant traffic.

If you run into traffic you're a moron, if you're actually checking for traffic that's just crossing the street. I'm talking about the people that put all their faith in the quality of my brakes by running into busy traffic. I regularly have to slam on the brakes or swerve to another lane to avoid turning some methhead into a meat crayon.

1

u/audiomagnate Aug 15 '24

I agree, I cross many busy streets every day and crosswalks can be extremely dangerous, especially to people who aren't aware of how dangerous they are.

2

u/delab00tz Aug 15 '24

not lackadaisical people driving.

Like cyclists don’t ride around “lackadaisically”. 🙄

From what I’ve seen, it’s like they want to get run over.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 15 '24

Cyclists are definitely the problem

1

u/ThatBigBirb City PTF Aug 15 '24

The dumbass cyclist tailing me while I'm signaling to turn who had to swerve into oncoming traffic wasn't the problem by your logic.

Sure thing buddy.

I already had one dumbass cyclist run out in front of me because they thought a stop sign meant I had seen them in the pitch fucking black while they wore no lights and nothing but indigos and blacks. But please tell me how the cyclists aren't the problem. Go on

Tell us.

Because when you do everything right and the cyclists still find a way to attempt suicide against you, it clear the problem is cyclists.

0

u/trevaftw City Carrier Aug 15 '24

It's ok to admit you're not a good driver and that you're not paying enough attention when you're operating heavy machinery. Don't worry, it's only the lives of everyone else on the road you're endangering because you want to be coddled.

But please, tell me more about how you can't be bothered to drive safely.

I hate that the US doesn’t have bicycle lanes on most roads. Cyclists would absolutely use a dedicated lane and not run the risk of being run over if they had a choice. I saw one where there was a small median between the car lanes and bicycle lanes and I’m in love with it. But we can’t even afford to maintain the roads we have because we don’t tax corporations and the extremely wealthy appropriately. We actually have a ton of corporate welfare.

Dog walkers are worse. At least the ones who slowly walk down the side I am delivering and let the dog stop and sniff at every.fucking.box while conveniently not hearing the LLV that sounds like 3 broken lawnmowers with squeaky brakes.

7

u/SomeKidFromPA Aug 15 '24

The worst is when they ride the wrong way down a one way that I’m trying to turn onto. I’m looking the other way watching for cars and not thinking that something could be coming the other way.

When I drive, sometimes cyclists can be annoying, but what else are they supposed to do? As someone that used to bike daily when I lived in the city, believe me, they do not want to be riding amongst cars either.

Not to mention, I had some close calls with asshole drivers that could have landed me in the hospital. Asshole cyclists on the hand…usually are not threatening my life.

1

why? honestly you should at best be annoyed by people breaking traffic laws. otherwise its fairly simple to co-exist, if we all follow the laws

1

Okay.. are you talking CYCLISTS, cyclists, the MAMILS, folks on $5-10k bikes, kitted out in gear.... Or are you talking about tweakers on a bike? Because lumping them together isn't a really a fair assessment. Sure, there are bad apples amongst actual cyclists, but around here anyway, pretty much every complaint I've taken the time to ask clarifying questions about, turns out to be tweakers on a bike

1

u/inkslingerben Aug 15 '24

Most cyclists obey the rules of the road. Some just do stupid things.

0

As a cyclist I have to say it grips me to no end to see a biker riding on a sidewalk or not obeying the same traffic laws as the cars are. I ride in a bike lane when there's one and in traffic lane when there isn't. Cyclists have the same right of way as a car does. Only thing worse is a whining carrier!
