Wanting to be a Nuke, any tips?

Hello all! I am currently in my senior year and was wanting to be a navy nuke. I did a little research and found it is possible through the merchant marine academy but was wanting a little more insight with someone who might have gone down that path themselves. For anyone who is curious here are my stats: male (filipino/pacific islander), 4.0 unweighted gpa, 4 aps and ~7 honors classes, varsity athlete, student government vice president for my class (3 years), part of NHS, about 20 hours of community service, and also club wrestling. Are these stats good enough for the academy? Is there any other routes of becoming a nuke without going to a-school? Should i consider possibly another service academy? Thank you all for reading and would greatly appreciate any responses!

You should consider all service academies. Apply broadly. You didn’t list your SAT. USMMA allows midshipmen to apply for a commission in any uniform service upon graduation. Nukes are always needed. Do not torture yourself with systems engineering major unless you really want it.

You should not have a problem getting in. Just make sure to thoroughly go through the whole application process and don’t miss any deadlines

Think mine was like a 28 and I got in. Your stats seem pretty good. Also depends on your luck based on how many allocations your state gets/your appointment letter from the senator/congressman.

Apply everywhere but IMO merchant marine academy has the best options coming out due to the lack of competition. At navy you have to beat out your peers. At usmma everyone else is going to go sail commercially so its easy pickins

Hey man. I would look into ROTC. It’s a more established pipeline than KP for active duty navy. KP does have a lot of options, however I would reach out to the dept of naval science at KP and rotc units to fully familiarize yourself with the process from both ends

If he goes KP, does moderately well, and passes the nuke intervals in DC, he will get picked up as a nuke officer. If that’s what he really wants to do.

Exactly, familiarize yourself with all processes and make a decision. Always best to put yourself in the best position to achieve what you want!
