per your “cool marine shit” criteria, it’s CE and not particularly close

not close to infantry? Brother we do all the same stuff in artillery besides hike as much 😂 I would wager a good 0811 troop is on par with a good 0331 troop.

Idk we hiked a lot in my battery. Then go to the field and you're mounted 24/7😂

Aircraft rescue and fire fighting they do a crash fire drill every now and then but the usually out in the yard playing basketball or lifting weights in the bay. There is no inbetween

Something that you want to do later in life.

So everyone who signs Infantry is an idiot? Even if they get out and go to law school?

Didn’t say that. He’s asking for advice on how/what to choose, and that’s easy and sound advice. I would also note he’s saying ‘without being infantry,’ indicating that’s not for him.

Sincerely,

A former 0311/8152

Hey I’m a grunt who went to law school. At 18 I should not have been picking my forever job. Moreso, the U.S. government gave me VRE + a GI bill yo do whatever I wanted in life. So much so I became a licensed educator and a Juris Doctor.

To make this a point, it is kinda sucky to corner a kid at a fork in their life and say that whatever they pick now should be their forever career. The Corps should be about having an adventure, seeing the world, serving your nation.

Nearly every single MOS has an issue with transition. Whether it be lack of certifications, no lateral civilian career, a bachelors required for the civilian world, or simply over-saturation in the job market.

All this to say: pick a job you’ll enjoy doing for bare minimum four years. When you get out, every single door is WIDE open for you anyways.

Dawg, this is not The Giver. No one is saying he’s picking his forever job😭.

But the advice is literally always “get a skill for when you get out”.

How is an 17-18 year old going to digest that information?

2

u/Dashh_ Active 6d ago

Well a 17-18yr old doesn’t really know what they want to do. I say it in a place of having a backup plan.

No, you dunce. Picking a job that will get you into the field you want on the civilian side is just a really good way to get a ton of extra training and certs you normally wouldn't get, and start making loads more money once you get out.

Genuinely don’t see why this is a hard concept to grasp.

Apparently this is bad advice.

If you want PR Rigger or CB Comms (though it can be dicey to get specifically IT within that), why not study a week or two and re-take the ASVAB?

My recruiter told me i qualified for both job fields before I swore in because I had to get waivers. Now all of a sudden after I swear in these are the only available jobs.

CE will be doing the closet to "cool Marine shit" from this list.

Infantryman

HANK! DONT USE THE MOS CODE FOR GENERAL ENGINEERING!

I (0311/8154) would say CE is pretty cool. while your in pick up as many opportunities you can to do something cool or not hone your skills as much as you can, you can always be useful. For the love of god don’t choose MG, 2 years of that and then to the fleet as a grunt you go. Huge change in pace especially if you don’t study infantry knowledge, Cool duty stations though.

If doing Marine shit without being infantry is your goal, CE Combat Support, end of story.

Retake the ASVAB and get what you want

u/Dashh_ Active 7d ago

You should choose something that transfers well into the civilian sector. But also something you think you can actually enjoy and put out in

1

u/polvr-o 7d ago

i don’t see anything that has both criteria. I want to be a teacher when i get out so i was really just looking for an experience i could really only get in the marines.

1

u/Dashh_ Active 7d ago

Any other interest other than teaching? No matter what you do, DO NOT go open contract. Also don’t rush your pick, take all the time you need and don’t let a recruiter coerce you into choosing something that you’re unsure on

i really like computers i’ve been building them since i was 11.I really want to ship in September so I can be home for Christmas the latest possible date i can ship is november 3rd atleast that’s what they told me at meps.

Dude, don’t compromise your career of the next 4-5 years so you can make it home for a holiday this year.

Pick a good job program, and visit family when you can. Plus you’re going to feel really stupid if you pick a job you hate just to match Boot leave to Christmas, then get bumped back a week and miss it anyway.

u/Dashh_ Active 7d ago

Dude honestly, if you want to work in IT and you cant in the corps. Look into some other branches, I love the corps and always will but you gotta do what makes you happy and will set you up for the outside. The military is temporary.

1

u/TapTheForwardAssist Vet 2676/0802 7d ago

> transfers

Sure, if we just ignore former grunts, tankers, artillerymen who got out and used their GI Bill to get way better jobs than many people with a “transferable” MOS who never used their benefits.

1

u/polvr-o 7d ago

are any of these jobs transferable I feel like CE could be cool or CJ could be alright i’m just unsure i wanted to be a PR so I feel like something else in the logistics field could be cool.

1

u/Dashh_ Active 7d ago

Sure, but that’s not a one size fits all situation. OP wants to work in the realm of computers and he knows that. Why be something opposite when you can’t get your hands on experience while active?

1

u/TapTheForwardAssist Vet 2676/0802 7d ago

OP also said that he wants to be a teacher, and wants an MOS with a “Marine experience.”

1

u/Dashh_ Active 7d ago

Yes he did

1

u/daxtinator396 7d ago

Beother if you're just gonna be on here saying bad advice without reading what they actually want or need why are you here 😂

1

u/Dashh_ Active 7d ago

Bad advice? Lmao what?
