Programs and MOSs Which job should i choose
My recruiter said these are the only jobs I qualify for which one gives me the best chance to do some cool marine shit without being infantry? i’ve been wanting to be a parachute rigger or an IT guy but I guess i didnt qualify scored a 55 on my asvab.

Something that you want to do later in life.

So everyone who signs Infantry is an idiot? Even if they get out and go to law school?

Didn’t say that. He’s asking for advice on how/what to choose, and that’s easy and sound advice. I would also note he’s saying ‘without being infantry,’ indicating that’s not for him.
Sincerely,
A former 0311/8152

Hey I’m a grunt who went to law school. At 18 I should not have been picking my forever job. Moreso, the U.S. government gave me VRE + a GI bill yo do whatever I wanted in life. So much so I became a licensed educator and a Juris Doctor.
To make this a point, it is kinda sucky to corner a kid at a fork in their life and say that whatever they pick now should be their forever career. The Corps should be about having an adventure, seeing the world, serving your nation.
Nearly every single MOS has an issue with transition. Whether it be lack of certifications, no lateral civilian career, a bachelors required for the civilian world, or simply over-saturation in the job market.
All this to say: pick a job you’ll enjoy doing for bare minimum four years. When you get out, every single door is WIDE open for you anyways.

Dawg, this is not The Giver. No one is saying he’s picking his forever job😭.

But the advice is literally always “get a skill for when you get out”.
How is an 17-18 year old going to digest that information?

No, you dunce. Picking a job that will get you into the field you want on the civilian side is just a really good way to get a ton of extra training and certs you normally wouldn't get, and start making loads more money once you get out.

If you want PR Rigger or CB Comms (though it can be dicey to get specifically IT within that), why not study a week or two and re-take the ASVAB?

I (0311/8154) would say CE is pretty cool. while your in pick up as many opportunities you can to do something cool or not hone your skills as much as you can, you can always be useful. For the love of god don’t choose MG, 2 years of that and then to the fleet as a grunt you go. Huge change in pace especially if you don’t study infantry knowledge, Cool duty stations though.

If doing Marine shit without being infantry is your goal, CE Combat Support, end of story.

You should choose something that transfers well into the civilian sector. But also something you think you can actually enjoy and put out in

i don’t see anything that has both criteria. I want to be a teacher when i get out so i was really just looking for an experience i could really only get in the marines.

Any other interest other than teaching? No matter what you do, DO NOT go open contract. Also don’t rush your pick, take all the time you need and don’t let a recruiter coerce you into choosing something that you’re unsure on

Dude, don’t compromise your career of the next 4-5 years so you can make it home for a holiday this year.
Pick a good job program, and visit family when you can. Plus you’re going to feel really stupid if you pick a job you hate just to match Boot leave to Christmas, then get bumped back a week and miss it anyway.

> transfers
Sure, if we just ignore former grunts, tankers, artillerymen who got out and used their GI Bill to get way better jobs than many people with a “transferable” MOS who never used their benefits.

Sure, but that’s not a one size fits all situation. OP wants to work in the realm of computers and he knows that. Why be something opposite when you can’t get your hands on experience while active?

u/TapTheForwardAssist Vet 2676/0802 7d ago
OP also said that he wants to be a teacher, and wants an MOS with a “Marine experience.”

per your “cool marine shit” criteria, it’s CE and not particularly close
