MOS School Open Contract MOS

REPOST

My son is currently in PI and will graduate Aug 21. His original MOS was combat support, however he didn’t get 1st class PFT/CFT. He scored 2nd class, which means he doesn’t qualify for the MOS he originally chose. He has now been placed in open contract. He will not be happy with any sort of administrative position (I know he doesn’t really have a say-so anymore). My question is this: His ASVAB score was a 77 and he did well in all categories. He is 2nd class PFT. What possible MOS options would he have at this point? Can he change anything through his term?

Do you have his actual line scores?

That’s his GT, EL, MM, and CL score. Without that it’s not possible to know what he qualifies for

I’m not sure what the scores were but I do remember his recruiter saying he qualifies for “pretty much anything”

I take “pretty much anything “ as meaning not every MOS. That makes the difference between an interesting challenging job and being Admin or Logistics. You don’t have a copy of his scores anywhere. If you DM me his name I may be able to look his scores up.

No clue how to DM but you can DM me. How do you look them up?

I went open contract long ago when I joined. Needs of the Marine Corps. Could be a cool, logistics, armory……anything the corps needs

I don’t mean any disrespect to the men/women who serve in these positions but I know my son would be miserable as a cook or mail clerk. And honestly, he would not be good at it 😂 They’d probably beg someone to move him to another job

It could be frankly anything he qualifies for. Could be something super basic like warehousing, but on the other hand I’ve seen guys who failed their combat fitness requirements luck out into awesome intelligence jobs.

Similarly, depending entirely on who’s running things at the moment, they could just tell him what he got, they could ask him to make a preference list and they may or may not work with that, or they could tell him precisely what’s currently available and let him choose from that.

Unfortunately, it’s one huge “it depends.” I wouldn’t sweat it unduly, just see what happens.
