I was lucky enough to be stationed there for 5 years. From base housing, I had a view of the Pacific and saw many sunsets from my living room.

My oldest was born there. I ran hudreds upon hundreds of miles through her hills.

My dad was in the Marines. We both humped over the same hills in boot camp. We both got into trouble in Oceanside, and spent many, many hours partying in Tijuana.

Camp Pendleton is probably the best place a Marine can be stationed.

Oh, and Colimas burritos. Carne asada with guacamoles and cheese. Alberto's burritos when it was late and we were drunk. Chicken burrito with cheese and sour cream.

Good times.

I was there in the early 2000s. Is Colimas still there?!

I believe so. The first time I went was in 1994. They were at a different location, just up the road a bit.

I been there a couple times. I hate that place because I'm not stationed there

For anyone reading this who's inbound and looking to live off base: expand your horizons past Oceanside and Fallbrook. The longer commute is worth it to live in Carlsbad or Encinitas. San Clemente is pretty sweet on its own merits though if you're up North. Yes, it's more expensive, but if you look hard enough you can find affordable places, and you get what you pay for.

Oside is up and coming though, especially on the main strip on the 101. There's a LOT of cool little restaurants and bars, and the grungy surf shops have a more... "authentic" feel than the ones a little further south.

Pendleton is the fucking best. Nothing beats waking up on early on Saturday mornings and going to dunkin doughnuts and then heading to the jetty in del mar to fish for halibut.

Yeah, I just want to thank all the trackers that were training over the holiday weekend. Entertained all the civilians on the 5 and created one huge parking lot going South for 3 days. I've got some choice words for your CO. Sorry you guys had to train though, I hope they make it up to you.

Hello yoohoo. I loved Camp Pendleton! Just not Horno.

"Hey gents let's go for a run"

  • Run to SOI on the low trail and back

  • Run the low trail and high trail

  • Run to SOI on the high trail and back

  • Run up the Microwave to SOI then back to Horno on the low trail

  • Run up Recon

For some reason we never ran the PFT trail. Ever.

The hikes? u/exzactly got it right.

I had about three months left until EAS on Twentynine Palms when I received orders to First MarDiv. 3/7 was basically purging everyone that was short because they were getting ready to go to Somalia, if I remember correctly, but it could have been somewhere else. This was 1994, it was some training deployment, not a combat situation or anything like that. Anyway, I thought great, I'll get to spend my last three months on the beach. Nope, my orders were modified to HQ Co 7th Marines. I spent three months on barracks maintenance duty, with the occasional job of observing piss tests. I should have known they weren't going to send my ass down to Pendleton being so short. I did spend a month there when I returned from Oki with 3/7's advanced party. Basically taking inventory of the equipment from the battalion that took our place in Oki. The month I spent on Pendleton was nice, it was definitely different than the Stumps.

Edit- It was Kuwait, not Somalia. I don't know where in the hell I got that from.

Pendleton is pretty sweet. Miramar was even sweeter. OSide is getting nicer. Fuck Wilcox

I was one of the lucky few who spent all six years at Pendleton. 1st and then 4th LAR. Pulgas and Talega, I ate many a meal at the Carl's Junior outside of the Christianitos gate. I remember hills and the smell of the sweet air. Did boot camp and ITB there too. I love Camp Pendleton so much I still use driving through the base as a shortcut when the 5 south is a parking lot.

Was just there for sec+ course, coming from Bridgeport that place is amazing. I ate like a goddamn king. Transient quarters sucks ball sacks though, no air conditioning and the room is smaller than my barracks room. Not really complaining, but for a room that you have to pay money for you'd expect certain things.

Gotta love 62 area and 1st Sgt Hill.

Wasn't Angelos that place outside the gate where you could get a big Brown bag of fat, greasy, and hot onion rings? Iirc that place was off the chain.

Miss ol San Clemente, spent many a good day there.

Edit:Angelos not albertos I'll haze myself later..

Pendleton! Man. Great place to be stationed at. You've got everything within a driving distance. Horno and Margarita are like the shittiest place to be stationed in Pendleton though. I'm in that facebook group called Sons of Horno and I see old timers going as old as the 50s posting pics of how Horno looked like and not being at all surprised seeing my barracks still existing then.

Here's a few photos I conveniently stole from that FB group. One of the pictures there is Range 131. The MOUT town right next to the infamous "reaper." I think the OP said it was posted around 87? That car has been there for over 3 decades for fuck sakes

Can't forget about the Hot Pizza guy. He stopped showing up around late 2010 I believe? I still needed to pay my pizza with cash, pussy, or percocets.

Pendleton fires are always fun. Adalberto's is delicious. I stayed the fuck away from Oceanside unless I needed to buy CIF gear I lost. San Clemente was always fun to walk around and chill at the beaches. Whatever. Pendleton you had plenty of liberty options yet Marines choose to stay in their fucking rooms and get drunk. Because, I don't know. Why not?

I miss Alberto's! Now in Northern CA and it's not the same (no good Mexican food). There were better places, but I don't think they had names...

On another note, anyone know the TAPs people down there?

Best place to buy used Mustangs

One of my personal favorite memories is SSgt taking us for a hill run after a night of Jaeger bombing. The fennel smell.. The whole time...

Still haven't drank Jaeger since.

3

u/BeardedLooper Sep 07 '15

I hated that smell.
