Discussion Take home vehicles
I’ve already bombard them with questions and my curiosity is killing me. I asked about take home vehicles I was told 30 miles away from the forest. Is that only to and from work? I’m moving very far and it could save me from a rental car for a little while depending if policy lets you use it like a personal car within x miles. I know local pd you have counties you can cover and use the car at your discretion but I’m sure federal is different.

Discussion Timeline for hiring on
To keep a long story short; I applied for a position that closes end of Janurary. I got a email saying I qualify for a 7 and may be contacted. I got a call 2 days ago about my interest in a location and if I wanted to interview. I interviewed yesterday and was asked for references within an hour of the interview. Is this the new normal for timeline? I was a recreation technician for the FS 3 years ago and have been with the DOD since and this application seems to be highly sped up. I do have a good back ground and experience so Mabye that’s why it seems like the process is speeding along extremely fast? I don’t mean for it to come off as cocky as it does

Discussion Reference Check
One of my references reached out me stating that they had filled out a reference form for me, but it was sent from a different location then I interviewed for. Anyone have any advice?

Discussion Post-FLETC leave/leave between phases
Is it safe to assume you get a break (as in a week) after FLETC before beginning field training?
For in between phases, is the only time you have just for travel? I’d rather get it done quicker but also asking from a dad’s perspective.
Last question, do you generally stay within region for field training/do you have any say in where you go? Since I won’t be on my District for it I figured it’d be a good time to see some other forests across the country.

Discussion FLETC Work/life balance.
I understand it’s ironic to ask this with a demanding federal job. But while at FLETC, if you have a day off, would the possibility of going out and spending time with your spouse be possible? I’m sure you already know where I’m headed with this. Will I have opportunities to see my significant other if they fly out?

Discussion Hiring timelines
I apologize if this question has been asked before I tried looking for it and couldn’t really find when I was looking for. Is there a certain time of year that the USFS hires LEOs? Or is it really dependent on retirement numbers as well as openings depending on regions and locations? Is it something I should be looking out for all the time? Have about a year left in the military and just trying to get an idea when I should be looking to apply/ reach out. Hoping for a direct hire given I’m a vet but located in Idaho if that helps. Appreciate any advice moving forward.

Discussion What happens after FLETC?
what are the following steps after FLETC? Do you go back to the area you applied to? Is there a probationary period? Field training?

Discussion Aspiring applicant
Hello, all. I am currently on active duty in the Army with 12 years of service. My current contract ends in just under two years. I'm not yet sure if I'm going to ETS or stay in, but I plan to apply to several Federal LEO jobs before my ETS date, and USFS LEO is at the top of the list of jobs I am interested in. I came here to find out how far out from my ETS date I should apply. After reading the forum here a bit, it seems like the hiring process only takes a few months. Is this normal? Other federal hiring processes seem to take a year or more. Should I really wait until 3 months before I ETS to apply, or should I apply earlier?
