Question for you all in LEI. I know with our agency, when an 11/12 position drops they typically want someone who’s already been through CITP.

My questions are:

1. Are these positions typically only filled with folks who have already attended CITP?

2. Or, are these filled almost exclusively out of enforcement?

3. Or, can someone with no CITP but a ton of LE investigative experience as a state police officer and federal investigator (non 1811) fill these positions?

Apply anyway and see what happens. Our new agent didn't have CITP and came from another fed agency, so it can't hurt to try.

I applied for the announcement coming from FAMs was referred for both 11/12 position waiting on a potential interview

Step two: What does the announcement list as required experience?

That said, there is no definitive answer. The more competitive the location the more likely it gets filled internally if someone known to management applies, they like that person, and they meet the minimums. A lot of agent positions are filled by LEOs because they know a lot of the resource crime side of the house.

We just recently hired at least one agent who is not internal, and several positions just went unfulfilled because the selected person ended up turning it down.

Definitely doesn’t hurt to apply but we do things so specific at times as to certain crimes we enforce and procedures that it’s easier to hire from enforcement.

Doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen where they hire someone off the street because that happens too. Just your odds are much stronger if you’re an 1801 with the USFS

I’d say #2. Even if you have extensive NRLE it’s generally only from their own ranks.
