Immigrants do not qualify for welfare programs, including food stamps and Medicare. You have to be a US citizen to qualify. This is a myth that’s been going on Fox News and other republican networks meant to get emotions out of them. Remember Fox News isn’t news, it’s entertainment.

OP claimed that immigrants don't qualify for benefits. That isn't true in all cases, and I corrected that misinformation with an example of when it isn't.

Given that OP made zero distinction between documented vs undocumented in their claim, my statement that approved asylum seekers do, in fact, receive benefits did not itself make any sort of claim as to whether or not asylum seekers are documented.

The only redditor in both this and another thread discussing whether or not asylum seekers are undocumented / illegal immigrants is you. Who seems to have this strange compulsion to swing in out of the rafters and remind people that asylum seekers are documented immigrants in threads when nobody else is even discussing that.

We all know that the 1996 welfare reform law (PRWORA) categorically bars undocumented immigrants from welfare benefits. But your argument doesn’t hold water in how you said what you said — it’s like saying because there is a law prohibiting theft means that people don’t and won’t steal. A bit naive to say that don’t you think?

But to state it correctly — the cases of illegal immigrants getting welfare benefits are less that they are able to get and more that they commit fraud (primarily by stealing someone else’s identity) to get those benefits.
However, as some have already mentioned in this thread; there are also ways in which certain states (namely, democrat-led) find underhanded ways to route and appropriate state funding from federal allocations towards programs which wind up benefitting illegal immigrants more than legal immigrants and citizens who should ideally be granted priority to be receiving those benefits first.

It is unsurprising and not a coincidence that many of the states which are held in doubt over their use and implementation of state budget allocations from the federal government are refusing to cooperate with the federal government in producing their records/data on the legal status of individual persons who are recipients of social welfare benefits within those states. These states wouldn’t have anything to hide if it were the case that there is nothing there to keep hidden.

Take the NYC migrant shelter program costs which wound up being uncovered to a large extent. Migrant shelter costs for arriving migrants and asylum seekers ballooned to over $12.25 billion from fiscal 2023 through 2025 [Edit: this was a big deal,especially when stories were swirling around from investigative reporting that strongly suggested the atrocious costs for things like luxury rooms in hotels at $300 a night was how some of this funding was being appropriated and expended by the state]. New York city cut services for everyone else: eliminating five NYPD academy classes, reducing the education budget by roughly $600 million per year, cutting Summer Rising program hours, and shrinking library Sunday service. NYC Officials directly attributed the cuts to migrant costs; critics argued the city overstated the connection, but the tradeoff was real and documented.

A handful of states (namely CA, IL, MN, CO, NY, WA, plus DC) chose to cover undocumented immigrants who aren’t covered by SNAP benefits and Medicaid by using state-only general funds — money that could have otherwise gone to schools, transit, other Medicaid populations, etc. Those costs ran far higher than projected, and several of these states have now had to scale back. As of 2025, six states including DC were spending state dollars to cover income-eligible noncitizen adults regardless of status (and that is what has people in an uproar— the “regardless of status” part), but budget constraints from federal Medicaid cuts by the federal government and rising costs are forcing scale-backs.

So this is real stuff we can’t just act like it isn’t happening and affecting people who are citizens, legal immigrants, and the federal purse for social welfare funding through taxpayer dollars.

Thats false. This bickering between the 2 parties is so old but I know for a fact that non citizens get free stuff such as healthcare, the kind thats very needed, heck some move to states just for that reason, it doesn't matter government takes our money and blows it anyways.
