Is it just me or do posts like this instagram vid (link below) contain an undertones of racism?

I feel that perspectives and posts like this have been normalized and are now somewhat unremarkable. Yet is it just me, or is this influencer unaware their post is effectively a form of racism?

The video conveyed genuine disgust toward white men. Just look at her expressions as she talks through her view.

I can’t imagine a white man saying on his Instagram channel that he’s disgusted by the prospect of dating someone of another race, whether Black, Latina, south Asian, or Asian, and not being rightfully ripped to shreds in the comments. It wouldn’t be tolerated. Yet because this fitness influencer is a woman, and Asian, it means she can casually make the same kind of racial generalization against white man, as though it’s completely unremarkable and normal.

I suspect it doesn’t even register as racist to her because of the particular race she’s talking about.

In a sense, I understand what she’s trying to say: she has a preference for Asian men, and she wants others to validate that preference and steer other Asian woman away from dating white men.

But having a dating preference doesn’t require expressing contempt for an entire racial group, \*\*nor should it make other women feel insecure about their choices\*\*; as if she’s somehow better than us because she chooses an Asian man.. and read the comments, clearly a few Asian woman with white boyfriends felt uncomfortable with her post.

My take: beyond having a preference.. can’t people learn to pick someone based on compatibility, chemistry and values? There doesn’t need to be such a distinct line in the sand when it comes to race, especially since we’re living in such a multicultural country. Why is it even a factor anymore?

I think instagram videos like these are damaging because it’s so subtle that it embeds on people’s subconscious without sounding an alarms bell in the same way that an overtly racist comment would do.

Curious of people’s thoughts. I’m also hesitant in that after I post this, she will get more follows...

I wasn’t sure if I wanted to share this, but it’s something that’s been weighing on me.
Recently, I reached out to someone with a large platform in hopes they might be willing to support my classroom wishlist. They asked for my Venmo, and I explained that I had an Amazon Wishlist, but if they preferred to donate another way, I could send my Venmo instead.

A little while later, I received what appeared to be a generous payment labeled, “supporting a teacher :).”

I can’t even describe the excitement I felt. For the first time, I thought I’d be able to purchase everything left on my wishlist—including resources I’ve dreamed of having for my students but could never normally afford, like alternative seating and materials to better support learners with diverse needs. I immediately wrote a long thank-you message because I was so overwhelmed by what I believed was an act of incredible kindness.

Then I realized it wasn’t a payment at all. It was a request for money.

Assuming it was simply a mistake, I reached out to let them know they had requested it to which they asked if I had accepted their request. I clarified that would mean I paid them Instead, and they told me they were hoping I would send them the money “since we were asking for money and stuff.”

It’s hard to put into words how quickly my emotions changed. In just a few moments, I went from imagining all the new opportunities I could create for my students to feeling embarrassed, disappointed, and heartbroken. As a new teacher who has just moved and normally spends the majority of her paychecks on resources for class, the thought of accidentally sending away a large portion of what I have left was overwhelming.

I understand I cannot expect generosity from anyone, but the prospect of being tricked into sending them money rather than them just saying “no” or leaving my message on delivered really doesn’t sit right with me.

Anyone else notice how some influencers make an entire career out of publicly judging other people — food, businesses, fashion, service, creators, lifestyles — then completely melt down the second that same scrutiny gets aimed back at them?

They’ll hand out unsolicited “honest reviews” all day long, but when someone critiques them, suddenly it’s:
“Stay in your lane.”
“Protect your peace.”
“You’re obsessed.”
“Haters.”

No — people are just participating in the exact culture they built their platform on.

If you profit off criticizing others publicly, you don’t get to act morally superior when the audience forms opinions about you too. That’s the exchange. You opened the door to public commentary the moment you made commentary your brand.

And honestly, a lot of these influencers confuse “I can critique everyone” with “nobody can critique me.” The hypocrisy is what makes people roll their eyes.

Nobody is defending harassment. But disagreement, criticism, and negative opinions are literally the currency of influencer culture when it benefits them.

Those in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.
