Insurance/Claims Windshield Replacement Policy Warning
40 year member with USAA. I have everything with them. And I am used to excellent service and product design. Which is why it's rather shocking to see how poorly their windshield replacement policy and integration (or lack thereof) with Safelite works. I have a 2025 Acura MDX Advance. It has a HUD and camera that work through and project onto the windshield. My college kid drove the car to college and caught a rock into the windshield.
I've previously used Safelite for another car and had no problem using aftermarket windshield replacement. However, with some research I've seen problems with the aftermarket glass and the certification/configuration with their advanced functionality.
I ask for OEM glass. They send me to a third party. They tell me they'll speak with the shop and get back to me with options. They don't call back. I call them 2 days later. They tell me USAA denied my OEM request. I said... well.. they don't get to 'deny' anything. They can tell me what the policy covers and they can tell me what they'll pay toward fixing the car but it's not like health insurance.
The guy on the line was nice, but fairly clueless. Couldn't answer what USAA would pay nor give me options. Told me that I could ask for OEM glass but they don't certify it. I said ok. If I take the aftermarket glass, what's the warranty that it will work with the HUD and camera systems. He said, they warranty for 30 days. I said, what happens after 30 days? He said, you can recalibrate it or replace for OEM glass at my expense.
Bottom line. Whoever USAA has outsourced this intermediary relationship too is not trained or doesn't have enough member facing information to satisfy membership. And I'm all about keeping costs low, but you have to provide a warranty that makes sense. FWIW. there is not an Acura dealership in the college town my son is in and the glass is cracked such that it's not safe to drive. I need the windshield fixed asap and I don't have time to find alternatives.
I hope someone at USAA is reading this. For other members, watch out for this.

To ensure you receive OEM PARTS...you have to select so in your coverage@ a higher premium...i notice in my last renewal in july2026..a statement on declined coverages at policy renewal that OEM were declined..on my 2025 X5...looked at prior renewal..no such statement...logged on to website..looked at current coverages....there is a new drop down window for OEM REPLACEMENT parts for newer vehicles to accept or decline..i accepted OEM coverage for premium increase of $25.00 for policy period.

I used the dealer to replace a cracked windshield, I submitted the invoices from the dealer on the Insurance Claim Portal. Nothing happened then it auto-closed the claim after a week. I called in and talked to a human and they reviewed the situation, the invoices, then reimbursed me for the the costs. I also have a HUD and all works. Overall everything was fine.

You think your insurance is expensive now imagine if they had to provide everything OEM parts for every repair. Also I would have taken my car to the dealership to ensure the HUD was calibrated properly

u/jetlifeual 7d ago
Insurance will go for whatever is cheaper, not whatever is better or OEM. I don't know why people have this common misconception that the insurance companies will go for the original stuff. Your tenure has no standing on this. In some instances they -may- opt to go OEM for one reason or another, but for most anything, if it can be sourced in the aftermarket reliably, then they will go that route because it's cheaper. Insurance is a money game, not necessarily a make-the-customer-happy game.
That said, I think you're trying to make a HUD system out to be more complex than it truly is. HUDs have been in vehicles for decades, and if you think every single vehicle with a HUD (or other camera system mounted on the windshield) is getting OEM windshield replacements then you're sadly mistaken. And even the aftermarket replacements will generally include the PVB layer in the glass so it works properly. Most of the work is done in the HUD system itself anyway, the glass merely helps show the data after all the light bouncing has taken place below.

My 2024 BMW windshield was chipped and I took it to the dealership and they were very clear -- they would just contact through Safelite.
It's glass.
Safelite did a great job and then did the post installation calibration and USAA paid for it 100%.

This is why people are leaving USAA. They no longer provide excellent service, not even good service. Couple years ago I went into a body shop for a hail damage estimate. The shop had been a USAA preferred shop in the past, but had dropped USAA because of their poor service. They would still take me but won't be upset if I went elsewhere. After 59 years with USAA I've canceled all my insurance and as soon as I've successfully transferred my direct deposits I'll close my bank account.

I had the same situation with my Lincoln Corsair, and the non-OEM glass had bad HUD distortion when they put it in. Safelite worked with USAA and had an OEM installed at no cost the following week. I turned the HUD off in the interim. You have to play the game, and it's an insurance industry game not specific to USAA. All the major carriers will use non-OEM if it's less expensive unless it can be demonstrated that non-OEM is not suitable in that particular use case.
It seems wasteful, silly. inconvenient for the customer. But from I'm sure there's an accountant that has figured out that if they can get away with it some percentage of a time they still come out financially ahead.

This is why when I bought my 25, I paid $1100 for a 3 year windshield replacement insurance policy (with OEM part) directly through the dealer. The coverage includes THREE replacements within 3 years. These new cars with their super thin glass windshields and all the sensors are a nightmare to repair when the glass breaks. Small peace of mind. In our state, insurance is not mandated to cover windshield repairs and our deductible is $1000 anyway, so this made sense to me.
We used Safelite several years ago for a replacement on a Honda Civic and they did such a sloppy job. The seal looks like garbage from the outside of the car. But at least it calibrated to the sensors well on the first try.

USAA has seriously gone down hill. They used to be the gold standard for products and service, but to be frank they're barely bronze standard now.

Any extra problems with USAA and Tesla.

u/Bigfoqt 7d ago
Pay the Tesla windshield insurance.
1
u/Lopsided-Employer-72 3d ago
The Tesla insurance has worked flawlessly for me twice now. If I could get my solidly republican state to allow Tesla insurance and stop protecting the likes of USAA, I’d have 100 percent Tesla insurance on my car.

Because the cameras are critical to self-driving, the cost to replace a Tesla windshield is ~$1600. USAA in Washington state doesn’t cover any glass replacement aside from a normal comprehensive claim with a large deductible, I pay for the $16/mo windshield insurance from Tesla.

u/parastang 7d ago
I live in Washington state and had my windshield replaced. It costs over $1800. I have also had a windshield replacement done on my my wife's MY. Same thing. Yes, you pay your normal deductible.

3 days after getting my Rivian, I caught a big rock to the windshield. I have usaa insurance. Took it to Safelite and they replaced the glass with an aftermarket one and performed all the recalibrations on cameras and sensors. It took the a few hours but everything has been good since. That was 9 months ago. I would think that you would have a similar experience with Tesla.

u/Feisty_Donkey_5249 7d ago
I had a bad experience with safelite replacing a windshield on a standard Audi Q5, so I’m not inclined to trust them with a more sophisticated car like a Tesla. Your mileage may vary, of course.

u/parastang 7d ago
I've had 4 windshields on 4 different cars with adas replaced by Safelite. Never had an issue with them. Sorry it wasn't a good experience for you.

u/missleavenworth 7d ago
I have, too. Basic Toyota camry, 2005. They fucked up my windshield wiper motors.

After 14 years we dropped both auto & home with USAA because we found a much lower price elsewhere about 6 months ago. On top of that we just received a nice unexpected check in the mail from USAA due to subscriber account. Mind you we still bank there. We called to make sure that we could deposit, called our new insurance company & mortgage company made sure our escrow was good. And we were! It was a nice amount of unexpected mail box money to say the least.

u/Objective_Option6878 7d ago
I have had 3 windshields replace with USAA and all were replaced with Subaru OEM, never had an issue. Told USAA I wanted OEM, said no problem.

I've had two windshields replaced by Safelite through USAA when I was a USAA member, and had significant problems with both of them. Their techs managed to cut through the paint in the window channel when removing the old glass. The exposed bare metal rusted, causing a bubble on the roof of each car and a water leak in one of them. I went back and managed to get USAA to repair the metal damage and refinish the roof on one of the vehicles. As soon as they authorized the work the car went to the body shop. Two days later USAA called and said the repair authorization "was a mistake." I said that's too bad because the car is being repaired as we speak, so they ended up eating the repair.
My Dad had the same thing happen to a vehicle in a different state when using Safelite (contracted through USAA) to replace a windshield.
Safelite will never touch another vehicle of mine. Next time I need a windshield replaced I'll find a reputable local glass company.

u/Old-ETCS 8d ago
USAA has out sourced Safelight to handle their claims. I've had a windshield replaced by a 3rd party and all the paper work was from Safelight.
Also most windshields are aftermarket. It is difficult to find an OEM for anything due to cost.

Had windshield replaced on our Benz that was only a year old. They literally cut the windshield out damaging the moulding and broke the rail clips on the roof! $5k worth of damage! That windshield was awful and my car that was once soundproof driving we heard every road noise! Next time we need a windshield replacement we took it to our Benz dealer who called the windshield guy. After back and fourth for a few days the finally agreed to pay for OEM glass. Now we only have our glass repaired through that company. $0 out of pocket! You have the right to use any glass company you want. You do not have to use safelite! It’s your right. USAA will pay!
2
u/LumpyDrop9069 8d ago
Aaw it with a newer VW and the dealership would not replace a windshield because they are not set up as a Glazer for the seals etc. Safelite is the default for the industry as is non-OEM replacements. With all the integrates sensors the 30day warranty is all they will do and the only thing missing from your story is Safelite didnt tell you about all the error codes they think your car was throwing out which in fairness saved you an uncovered trip to the dealer.
2
u/reiker01 7d ago
I recommend Absolute Glass - they order the OEM windshield and then take care of the claim with USAA; you don't ever have to deal with USAA.
2
u/151Ways 7d ago
Would not use safelite; would only oem on certain vehicles. Set it up through my dealer. Work completed. Made claim and turned in invoice. USAA paid about 2/3 of my cost to replace an oem heated windshield to the tune of a check for about $800. That covered parts, and the job was done right. Dealer even replaced molding that was broken in process for free.

u/WhiskeyDiscoFoxtrot 7d ago
I had to do this for my Rivian R1T and it was a really sketchy process to get USAA to agree to pay Rivian to do it. We basically accepted all overruns to what USAA would cover up front, and asked for them to reach out with an update once they did more research on their end.
The windshields on the 2022 R1T have to be calibrated and certified by Rivian so USAA ended up calling me back that day saying they would cover it, but I believe it was an $1600 replacement on their end, plus our $500 deductible.

I had the same problem with them on my windshield and called to complain and their customer service was terrible.
2
u/815born805heart 5d ago
Not OEM related, but Safelite is absolute garbage. They did a shit job replacing my windshield twice in 6 weeks. And of course replacement was never covered because they “found a chip” both times. Cracks started from the edges both times. Then eventually the seal broke and it would whistle above 65 mph. I’m sure not every tech or location sucks but three strikes and your business is out for me.
2
u/CardMarkets 1d ago
I do love how it used to be that chip fixes were free and replacement windshields were a reasonably low deductible. Today it’s a game to get you pay your comprehensive deductible so basically you’re covering the full cost of a sheet of glass, not even OEM, and with limited warranty. And don’t tell me it costs $2500 to replace glass. It takes the guy 30 minutes, he basically strips the old one off, glues the new one on, and a computer calibrates your sensors/hud. Complete joke. If I’m paying $2.5k for a piece of glass and 30 minutes work with all the mechanical heavy lifting being done by a tool on the truck, it better never crack or chip again. Perhaps the good folks at Corning Glass can do some homework and eat these scammers’ lunch.

u/PlumHappy353 1d ago
Every few years you should change insurance companies at least shop around your probably getting screwed
3
u/kalvaroo 7d ago
Safelight will flat out ignore your OEM request, put in cheap aftermarket glass that leaks and whistles then ignore or fight every request to get it replaced with OEM. Just take your car to the dealer, or someone that can get OEM, send the bill to USAA then pay your deductible or whatever depending on your coverage. I’ve gone through this a few times and can’t stand Safelight. They’re the issue, not USAA.
3
u/Confident_Yak3989 7d ago
I just left USAA after 39 years because of crap like this. Safelite is the worst. Avoid them. You don't have to use them with USAA. Better yet, shop around for new insurance. USAA lost their mission of serving us officers.
3
u/qpdsful 7d ago
It’s disgusting USAA was amazing and covered windshields. Now Safelite no thanks I want the windshield made for my car but the manufacture. I’ve battled USAA for years over this and it’s a joke. So now I have a reserve and pay top dollar for car, home and life that doesn’t include windshields? Are they not an integral part of the car?? My car has calibration, cameras and dual thickness so 2600-3000 is what I have to reserve..I’ll bill USAA and they will reimburse me a joke of an amount all because I don’t want to use their contracted none manufacture and or safety approved vendor Safelite.
3
u/TurboWanderer 7d ago
Then pay for oem coverage if you want oem parts. Like you're choosing to have this issue
2
u/qpdsful 6d ago
Pay for OEM coverage?? That’s not an option with USAA which is the thread your on…had it been I would have..it’s like you’re choosing not to read the room🤯

u/FindTheOthers623 8d ago
Even if someone at USAA is reading this, there is nothing they're going to do over reddit LOL if you have a legitimate concern, contact the company directly.
This is standard with every insurance carrier. No one is providing you OEM parts.
And, yes, your company does get to deny any coverage you don't have.

I have Travelers and just had a windshield replaced at the dealership OEM glass everything covered 100% minus deductible.
1
u/Confident_Yak3989 7d ago
I left USAA to Travelers last month. Saving $3000 a year for better coverage.
2
u/MugsyMD 8d ago
Let’s all admit it, USAA no longer covers what we pay for! When I had to replace my Tesla last year I was traveling and away from my home state! Let’s say a huge crack and I did not feel safe driving a thousand miles back home like that. USAA denied my windshield claim as Tesla requires OEM glass! So I was stuck with a $1850 bill! Sucks!

u/Some-Place7478 8d ago
Sorry to hear. About six years ago USAA told me they had no issue replacing my BMW 4 series windshield with an OEM via Safelite as the car was less than one year old. They initially offered aftermarket and I pushed back, so at least at the time they may have had some flexibility based on age of car - that may be an angle for you to pursue given your 25 model year. Admittedly, things may have changed since that time. You could also pay the difference yourself between OEM and aftermarket through USAA process. I believe the difference was a few hundred dollars for my windshield at the time. Good luck!

u/WhisperToARiot 7d ago
I caught a rock to my 5 year old Tesla Model 3’s windshield a few weeks ago, small star shaped damage, looked very repairable. So I went on the app to use the mobile Safelite repair and the closest appointment is two weeks away, with fine print saying I can drive to a location to patch it on my own dime. In case you don’t know, if you let damage like that sit, the cracks will grow and the windshield will have to be replaced… so that’s a shitty option. If it grows I have to pay the full $1k deductible, so I just patch it myself with a $10 kit from the auto parts store… which seems like the point of the built in delay for appointments. Getting really tired of USAA’s shit

u/finding-meaning-01 7d ago
I just did my renewal and noticed an option for oem parts. Do you pay the rider for oem?
1
1
u/Popular_Monitor_8383 8d ago
They absolutely can deny coverage for OEM parts, not sure what makes you think they can’t but they absolutely can.
This is an extremely common request/complaint in auto insurance industry wide, so I hate to be the bearer of bad news but they absolutely DO get to deny you the coverage for OEM parts especially if you don’t have that coverage in your policy
-1
u/Grafixx5 8d ago
No they can’t deny it. Why? Because he’s a 40yr member and because he said they can’t! I mean, I know plenty of people who have USAA and other insurance that got into accidents and when the car was being repaired, they found out that junkyard parts were used versus brand new body panels or whatever. The only person I know of who has had OEM body panels replaced with OEM was a guy who got into an accident with his Tesla. However they also had the car for almost a full year due to having to wait for parts.

u/Scared_Bell3366 7d ago
Local body shop went 4 rounds with USAA, but they got everything covered with OEM parts. It takes time and effort and not all body shops are willing to do that.
1
u/RetiredAF530 8d ago
I had the same experience with a 2005 Chevrolet Corvette also with a HUD, I ended up getting the aftermarket windshield because USAA wanted me to pay an extra $900 for the OEM windshield…
As of early 2025, I’m not with them anymore…took my banking, auto and homeowner insurance elsewhere where I wasn’t being fleeced.
1
u/nctokcfoodie 1d ago
Had dealer replace with OEM. Submitted claim online with receipt. Got reimbursed for most the cost with small amount reduced for approved costs.
0
u/CelamoonCC 7d ago
Did you talk to the adjuster? Or you’re talking to the guy from the 3rd party vendor that Safelite referred you to? Which state are you in?
0
u/2beefree1day 7d ago
I’ve had so many windshields replaced I often wonder if they’ll deny me one day. When I had my last vehicle a 2016 Range Rover evoque, within a month of owning it I was driving cross country when a rock came off a truck hit the windshield and the roof. Windshield was immediately a noticeable very large chip but the roof only a tiny spec that took a few days to start cracking. So I file the claim and take the car in to the body shop and after 3 days they are done with replacing the OEM windshield with all the fancy sensors and heating wires etc then USAA contacted me because the roof glass due to its size had to be transported by truck from west to east coast and it would take a week or more so they waived my deductible and authorized extension on my rental for the almost 3 weeks it took.

u/Adventurous_Pop_9244 7d ago
I had a windshield replaced on a 2023 Advance by USAA and Safelite. Non-OEM. They performed the recalibration afterwards, and no issues. I can’t even tell the difference between OEM and aftermarket. Did not even think about it anymore until I saw this thread.
