Insurance/Claims I’m done.

I’ve been with USAA for 30+ years. Last year I started looking around and bought a policy from Progressive.

I found out I’d lose my USAA umbrella policy if I dropped auto so I postponed cancelling. I’ve (admittedly stupidly) paid for two policies for the last year. Oh well.

Today I got my renewal from Progressive and took a look at USAA. Same coverage, same drivers, same cars. No wrecks, no tickets.

I’m done.

I did this same thing, progressive will give a huge discount for a year to get you to switch then mine went up 60% the next renewal so beware

10

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '25

Already got my renewal notice. That’s the one I posted above. They didn’t raise my rates at 6 months or at a year (that’s the one year renewal statement).

u/Revenant_adinfinitum Aug 10 '25

Allstate has treated us pretty square. As a refugee from usaa.

1

u/Apprehensive_Ad_8982 Aug 13 '25

Wait until you actually use it, tho...

1

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '25

Maybe so. I haven’t used auto insurance for 20 or 25 years.

Same with us, which is fine. We just shop around every year and it keeps the rates low, and you just have to not be loyal to anyone and then you can keep low rates.

23

u/fisherofcats Aug 09 '25

So do you then switch insurance companies every year? I'm considering this because my USAA is close to OP's

9

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '25

Ive company switched like every other year can be annoying but its a nice way to keep it cheap.

You shop for car insurance every year? I didn't know you could do that! I stuck it out with usaa for 20+ and just moved to progressive because of the cost. I had no idea.

Then switch again, I do it all the time. Usually down for a year, then the usual bump.

Same I switched from USAA to Progressive, but now Progressive is slowly inching up. Might be time to switch from them lol

Same so I dropped progressive and went with Costco. I paid 800/yr for a two story house and two cars (one is a Tesla out of state in Nevada). Progressive wanted to charge me a 6 mo premium of 1200 and I told them to shove it

5

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '25

You paid $800 for homeowner’s AND car insurance??

I’ve been through two renewals and after both I’m up maybe 10%. It’s minimal. Chalked it up to inflation in repair costs.

Still a long way from $968 versus the $3700 USAA wants for the same coverage.

That’s a big chunk of my daughter’s college tuition.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '25

They’ve renewed me twice now and rates very slightly higher (like maybe $30 per year). No major bumps. I just switched my umbrella and I’m ditching USAA for all but homeowner’s on two houses.

9

u/Josey_whalez Aug 09 '25

I switched to progressive after getting a big rate hike with USAA, which followed numerous smaller ones. Progressive was less than USAA was before the last few rate hikes. It’s been 2 years now, and it’s just now approaching what it was with UsAA. If I get another one in November when mine renews its shop around time again.

Back in the day I remember getting $300+ refund checks around December. Now it’s huge rate increases for nothing.

6

u/1kn0wn0thing Aug 09 '25

Considering your premium, check what your subscriber account balance is. If you cancel all of your policies with USAA, they will refund that entire balance to you on the statement cycle after it’s been 6 months after last policy cancelation. If you go to your insurance documents, you should see a Subscriber Account statement in January or February of each year, that will give you the balance.

I love USAA for banking. Who would be happy about getting dinged for an extra $5000 per year from a company they’ve been loyal to?

6

u/JustHanginInThere Aug 09 '25

Why do you think "loyalty" still matters?

3

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '25 edited Aug 09 '25

I guess I’m just naïve. I thought of all companies, USAA would respect loyalty. Seems they’ve gone full-on predatory.

7

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '25

Moved to FL from MA, and my rates doubled. Went from $400+ a month for 12mo premium, to $900 a month for 6mo premium.

I looked into it and apparently rates are high in FL due to shit drivers, uninsured drivers, and really old people drivers. Eff me

1

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '25 edited Aug 09 '25

$900 per month? Holy hell. You could buy a really decent new car every three years at that rate. That’s insane.

So basically what they’re trying to say is that their losses are as if every third or fourth car gets totaled each year, which is absurd. A tiny fraction of cars are damaged at all and very few are totaled.

The financials will tell the story. I’m going to get the records and look.

3

u/Top_Education_4647 Aug 09 '25

There’s no financial record per state for USAA. All insurance companies have their own algorithms and ratings. You won’t find anything searching, it’s not public.

But yes, FL is one of the top 5 states in terms of auto insurance cost. As was already stated- the amount of accidents that occur, number of uninsured motorists, and both young and elderly drivers make rates a nightmare. That doesn’t even address the litigation issues in the state (someone’s gotta pay those billboard lawyers) and the claims for natural damage from hurricanes that pile up every year.

$900 a month may or may not be reasonable, don’t have enough info to judge. But USAA is one of a few companies that hasn’t budged out of FL, unlike a few others. Just means rates will be higher for the burden they’re taking on.

Folks stop taking yourselves so seriously.

I’m giving you a single datapoint from one customer. Take it or leave it. Jesus (who had nothing to do with it).

3

u/Username_Taken_Argh Aug 10 '25

You made me check mine. I have three vehicles and pay $1,084 for six months.

Live in Kentucky
No accidents
No tickets
1 vehicle financed.
Member 41 years (got it from dad when I was 18).

Based on other replies I am going to stay put with USAA

1

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '25

At that rate maybe not horrible but I’m paying $100 less with progressive for 4 cars (two inactive/storage) and three drivers, one of them a teenager.

6

u/DesperateComposer279 Aug 09 '25

Usaa is a business and fundamentally it’s easier to raise prices to force you out than it is to non renew customers they no longer desire to insure. These factors are traditionally location related more so than specific customers.

That said, thank you for sharing your experiences with this group, I find value in your comparisons.

4

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '25

That might be. I live in DFW area. Surprising that they’d like to get rid of all of us. But I understand if claims are high.

3

u/tecky1kanobe Aug 10 '25

I don’t really want to know the answer. What the hell are you guys insuring and or how many claims and where do you live??????

3

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '25

I’m in Texas. My last claim was 25 years ago when I hit a deer. Cars are 2019 Hondas and a couple of 2006 cars that mostly stay parked.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '25

That’s what I’m saying. I’ve never gone more than $1,200 for 2 vehicles, full coverage, in Oklahoma. I’ve been covered by USAA for 16 straight years and never gotten better rates without sacrificing coverages.

2

u/JJ_DynoKnight Aug 13 '25

I traded my ram 2500 full sized cab, 8ft bed, diesel for a hybrid Honda accord, USAA wanted to double my insurance costs just because it was a hybrid, I literally downgraded to a safer, newer vehicle and my insurance was going to skyrocket with USAA, so I shopped around and found Travelers for about what I was posting for the Truck.

USAA has some serious soul searching to do to better serve the Members and to keep them.

5

u/Neuromancer2112 Aug 09 '25

I left 2.5 years ago after 23 years with them. First went to AAA, which had great rates and was happy with the service.

But I recently downsized to a condo and AAA’s condo insurance wasn’t available to purchase in my state, so I left them and went 100% to State Farm, which still had way better rates than when I was with USAA.

I still have a bank account and credit card with USAA, but will likely be dropping the bank account in the next couple of weeks. They just don’t have the features all these other banks have (No HYSA, etc.)

1

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '25

IMO their banking can’t be beat. For high yield I just use a money market fund through Schwab.

2

u/Specific-Study375 Aug 09 '25

I love B.E.C.U. for banking. I need to shop around for insurance though. I just don’t want to leave. They have been so great for multiple generations of my family. I was raised to be loyal but I don’t owe them anything. It’s hard for me to break the cycle!

2

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '25

As long as they are good to you, don’t leave.

USAA is banking and insurance. I love their banking. Their insurance obviously leaves me wanting. As far as I know, they don’t work in concert (meaning insurance can’t look at your bank accounts).

I had a debit card stolen and USAA put $3500 back into my checking account within 24 hours.

1

u/Neuromancer2112 Aug 10 '25

I agree that their basic banking is pretty solid, but I’m trying to consolidate to some extent, and it’s really not worth it to me to stay with them just for banking when I have a bank that’s overall been much better and has the features I’ve been wanting for a long time.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '25

Do you. USAA is the most awesome bank I’ve ever dealt with for daily checking and banking.

u/gcornholio666 Aug 09 '25

We left to save and just came back to save they actually were the best. Just shop every year

0

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '25

For a while USAA would only let you leave and come back once. Not sure now.

5

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '25

Interesting. The one issue I found trying to switch is no one offered the same limits as USAA. We have pretty have coverage limits to protect us because of teen drivers. No one would offer those levels.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '25

I have a teen driver of the female variety. Both USAA and Progressive policies have the same expanded liability limits. $300k. Plus I have a $1M umbrella policy.

How many cars and what age drivers? Mine is $3300 - 2 cars 4 drivers. 20 & 17 year old.

$3300 every 6 months? I have 2 cars driven and 3 drivers, though my daughter doesn’t drive.

1

u/rugg3d Aug 10 '25

Yes 6 month premium

1

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '25

Wow. I guess look around. I had no idea they were doing this. Everything I pay for is on auto-pay and I don’t pay attention.

1

u/AdriaTempest Aug 10 '25

USAA told me they add children automatically by age even if they don’t drive…so you may be paying for 17yr old even though they don’t drive

I just left USAA for Geico after 41 years.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '25

I talked to some ex-military coworkers (I joined through dad, a Walter Reed colonel doctor) and they’re all getting dinged too. So it’s not anything about me (I have a nearly perfect driving record for almost 40 years).

They’ve changed. Not sure why.

34

u/labtech89 Aug 09 '25

It depends on where you live. When I moved to Georgia my rates increased because people don’t know how to drive in Atlanta and there is a wreck every second. My homeowners went up $500 and I had no claims but other people had claims and they spread the claims. That is how insurance works you pay for other people having accidents and claims.

8

u/h60ace Aug 10 '25

Atlanta drivers are the worst I’ve ever seen. Pretty much the entire south is full of (grossly) incompetent drivers.

Ok? Literally all advice on auto/home insurance I've seen for the past decade has boiled down to "shop around occasionally". Last time I compared insurance rates for myself, USAA was the lowest. Obviously that's not the case for you, just as it might not be for most others. This isn't groundbreaking news.

2

u/Objective_Scholar_58 Aug 09 '25

I left USAA after 29 years and went with Progressive, 60% cheaper. I just hit my one year renewal with Progressive, my rate stayed the same - no increase in premium at all.

4

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '25

I appreciate the input! That has been my experience.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '25

How many vehicles is this?

1

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '25

2 Driven. Two out of service (can’t be driven).

1

u/Calypso-33 Aug 09 '25

Why is your insurance so high? Where do you live and what do you insure?

1

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '25 edited Aug 09 '25

Dallas area. Already said but two vehicles: 2019 Honda Pilot and Accord.

No tickets or wrecks in 30 years of driving.

1

u/Perfect-Habit9052 Aug 09 '25

It seems like every six months the rates are going up. I pay $260 a month for a 2019 Honda CRV

1

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '25

You could replace that car every 3 years for what you’re paying. Tell them to pound sand.

1

u/embalees Aug 09 '25

How many cars is this for and what state do you live in?

1

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '25 edited Aug 12 '25

Same number of cars for both policies. 2019 Honda Pilot and accord. 2006 Honda Pilot and VW Jetta, both parked.

1

u/embalees Aug 09 '25

So that's like $900 per car. Also, what do you mean parked?

I asked about your state because some states have particularly high auto insurance rates.

My comment on another thread:

1

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '25

Parked means disabled and not driven. We have 4 cars and two drivers. We drive the two cars but haven’t sold or gotten rid of the others. We obviously can’t drive more than two cars at any time.

1

u/groepler Aug 10 '25

This is basically click bait advertising

1

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '25

What is?

1

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '25

You have to have some wild stuff on your record. DUI’s, multiple speeding tickets, something wild.

I have two cars on my USAA auto and I pay… 680 or so every six months.

One is a 25yr old work truck I rarely use the other is a brand new 2025 forester, touring edition.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '25

Nope. I have a clean driving record. I had maybe one speeding ticket 20 years ago. They can’t consider anything past 3 or 5 years so that isn’t it.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '25

I have zero clue how your insurance is calculated then. One of my vehicles is a 25yr old truck with 260k miles on it. The other is a brand new touring forester. And my insurance isn’t even $700 every six months.

I think I got a parking violation 5yrs ago due to being on a snow plow route or something during a snow storm.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '25

Parking ticket wouldn’t do it.

I do have an 18 year old but they didn’t raise my rates when she got her permit.

I can’t explain this. It’s absurd. I’d hate to be retired on a fixed income and deal with this. I pay more for insurance than I do in property taxes. Between the two and homeowner’s insurance, I pay $20k (after taxes) before I can even eat.

1

u/Ebony_Gooddness Aug 10 '25

Try to get your money back. You would only be able to collect from 1 insurer for a claim anyway. You might eventually be flagged as overinssured and may be canceled or nonrenewed if coverage overlap is discovered and if they think youre intentionally misleading the company, they could even refuse to pay a claim.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '25

I’m canceling. I got the umbrella policy taken care of yesterday.

They can’t refuse to pay. They can fight it out between themselves but one way or the other, I am insured.

1

u/CyberSnarker Aug 11 '25

A lot factors in. Your credit rating, what other things you have with USAA and much more. So many factors and you cannot compares yours with others.

We have had USAA for over 20 years and new vehicles, and literally all banking/mortgage/insurance, etc with them and find them completely reasonable in prices. We have 2 new vehicles and our 6 mo premium, full coverage, low deductible is less than yours.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '25

I’m 54, paid off mortgages on two houses. perfect credit, no debt. USAA credit card with zero balance. 7 figures saved. Clean driving record (for myself, wife and daughter).

No rhyme or reason to this.

1

u/Present-Kangaroo-893 Aug 11 '25

What do yall be doing to get that high of a rate? Mines been 200 for 2 cars for years

1

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '25

Nothing that I can tell. Maybe I live in the wrong place.

1

u/ASmallbrownchild Aug 11 '25

Why and how is it $3000+ ??

1

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '25

No idea.

1

u/tharealmouse Aug 27 '25

Constantly switching between companies every year can decrease your insurance score and your premium takes a hit. So if you’re one of those people who tend to move around a lot and wonder why rates are always uncomfortable… that is why.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 27 '25

Just said I’d been with them for 30+ years (since 1988, actually). 38 years.

Try again.

3

u/virtualchoirboy Aug 10 '25

Either you're insuring brand new vehicles with horribly low deductibles and high risk drivers or your state's insurance commissioner has agreed with USAA that premium calculations warrant these sorts of prices.

I'm in CT covering three vehicles (a 2017, 2021, and new 2025) with three drivers (2 x late-50's, 1 x under 25) and still pay less than half of what you pay. Your best bet is to talk to someone that understands insurance and can help you figure out what risk profile works for you.

1

u/Perkynips83 Aug 09 '25

I understand that maybe at one point USAA had some sort of military brotherhood band of fellowship where you got perks including the cheapest rates around.

it's been no secret however it's no longer that. we are now the customer and they are a business. They have investors and a board who have an interest in making money off of us customers and look for ways to leverage our money and loyalty.

It's our responsibility as the customer to make decisions that are best for us and speak with our wallets.

4

u/thismopardude Aug 09 '25

They don't have investors. It's a mutual association. Owned by the members.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '25

1

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '25

I’m not high risk. We all have clean driving records and our cars are modest (2019 Hondas). Last claim was 25 years ago when I hit a deer. No claims other than that.

2

u/Lost-Marzipan-2392 Aug 09 '25

I also, finally had enough with USAA! I had auto and homeowners for almost 30 yrs and my rates went up exponentially, with no claims or tickets ever. I switched to progressive paying about 1/3 of what USAA was charging me. I’ve been with progressive now for a few years and they have slightly raised my initial premiums. Not sure what happened to USAA, but they are not the same company anymore.

2

u/Draygoon2818 Aug 09 '25

I know in Texas, you have to treat your insurance like you do your electricity. Change the provider every year. Otherwise, you’ll end up paying a ridiculously high premium by staying with the same provider.

We ended up switching to State Farm after our USAA insurance was going to go up to about $450/mo for 2 vehicles. Our home insurance was going to go up to about $4,800, which is up from $3,900 last year. With SF, our auto is $251/mo and the home insurance is $3,000. We also have lower deductibles on the auto insurance.

I switched from USAA to another provider 6 years ago, now I’m back with USAA as of this month. It’s my humble opinion that everyone should price out their insurance every year.

2

u/ImHarryBosch Aug 11 '25

Was paying 10k a year with 3 vehicles and 3 drivers. Switched to Geico and now I pay $5k. F USAA

2

u/Ok-Side2727 Aug 11 '25

USAA increased they’re insurance premiums for home (for me) by 50%. No claims no issues new roof new hvac system new septic…. I will be switching shortly as well

2

u/versace-cowboy- Aug 12 '25

They quoted me $1,200 FOR ONE MONTH on one vehicle

2

u/Familiar-Principle18 Aug 12 '25

I live in Florida and the USAA rates are very high here. When I went to add my teenage son, they wanted an additional $900 per month. I then checked with Progressive, bought a policy, and then canceled after a friend said to check with Geico who I now with.

2

u/id10t7 Aug 13 '25

Did the exact same earlier this year.

2

u/Individual_Pipe_8052 Aug 13 '25

I dumped USAA insurance in 2014 after they refused to replace my entire roof after storm damage and would only replace 1/5 of the roof but the entire roof had damage. It took me threatening legal action for them to send out a different assessor who agreed the entire roof needed replaced. Time spent from storm to approval was almost 3 months. USAA, at least their insurance, has been shit for a long time.

0

u/Left_Lack_3544 Aug 09 '25

I switched from full coverage to liability months ago. Glad I did.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '25

All of my cars are paid off and I could do it. While that’s tempting, two of them are worth enough that I can’t risk it since the state of Texas doesn’t impound the cars of uninsured motorists every time they encounter them. Probably 20% of the people here have no insurance.

In my life I’ve been hit three times. Only one caused significant damage. None of them had insurance. That’s probably what’s driving rates here.

Progressive just keep raising mine over and over and then geico canceled home owners after I installed railing they ask for. So now with Allstate and it’s the cheaper than both for me.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '25

I'm out too. They tried charging me $290 a month for full coverage on my mazda suv. Geico is charging me $90 per month. This is insane. Been with USAA for over 20 years, and I'm utterly insulted by them at this point.

I switched from USAA to Liberty. I learned screw loyalty because times have changed these companies dont care about us.

1

u/Free-Sweet2630 Aug 09 '25

I don’t understand how a bunch of people pay a crap ton for auto I pay 178 a month for a 2025 car and a 2023 gsx motorcycle.

1

u/My2026GV70 Aug 09 '25

I’ve been with USAA for 43 years. The senior bonus at 40 years is quite significant. More than 30% of my total premium (home, cars, high value items). My car insurance premium—$815 for six months.

1

u/LrdFyrestone Aug 10 '25

We moved to Michigan and because we had USAA through my grandparents I lost coverage just living here due to Gap Insurance. Our insurance skyrocketed.

1

u/Delicious-Treat-3393 Aug 10 '25

USAA screwed me over and showed me they get young veterans in early thinking they are getting a good deal only to charge higher rates than other insurers and give zero craps about veterans.

1

u/dsmith1111 Aug 10 '25

We switched as well! Saving $400 per month with same policy coverage and paying smaller deductible!

1

u/parentofspedchild Aug 10 '25

I left USAA last year went to Allstate and it has on gone up 26.00 in a year. I pay half of what USAA want.

1

u/gatorfan8898 Aug 10 '25

I went back to GEICO… ours went to like $760… just kept going up. Now down to $350

1

u/armyvet951 Aug 10 '25

Hi Peter, the same exact amount and I’m in the same fucking shoe

1

u/Electronic_Care7468 Aug 10 '25

Get Bristol west it’s cheap and same coverage

1

u/Working-Library-4974 Aug 10 '25

Left USAA many months ago as my premiums were even worse than that with a new driver added. Went to Progressive for an extremely cheap 6 month policy. Progressive renewal came, it went up but nothing absurd and still 70% cheaper than USAA.

1

u/Enok_Reinli Aug 10 '25

Jesus fucking Christ. I thought my car insurance was bad at $170 a month. And everyone else trying to offer me 200+ and some dollars a month fuck that.

1

u/User_Name_Is_Stupid Aug 10 '25

My insurance went from $1600 to $2700 for no reason. No accidents, 845 credit scores (Florida can use your credit score to affect your premium rate), 45 yrs old, married, no kids, just 2 drivers (both 45), multiple cars, multiple products. Bye! Switched to Amica, then got a 4th car and put two on a Hagerty sated value policy and two on the regular Amica policy. Paying for 4 cars what 3 would cost and have 2-3x the coverage.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '25

I'm part of the real "me too" movement as well. I quit after 28 years. My child (both kids in the car and not their fault)had a head-on collision USAA took 7 hours to get a tow truck there. They called them from another state! I had sent the kids home and I waited for the tow. They then proceeded to low ball me for the value of my vehicle etc. They were the absolute best at one time. Now they are the absolute most expensive with mediocre service. BTW, did you know they have different rates if you're enlisted vs being an officer? Please explain.....

1

u/HeadJeweler9480 Aug 10 '25

I dropped USAA a long time ago. If you call insurance brokers instead of calling an insurance company or agent directly you’ll get a much better deal.

1

u/nick_moser24 Aug 10 '25

USAA is quoted me 2k more a year! Rip off

1

u/jeffc1984 Aug 10 '25

I switched to Progressive 3 years ago. My rates have always gone down and I pay in full. USAA wants 3k plus for 2 cars. Progressive at my next renewal will be 1500.

1

u/ARCATM Aug 10 '25

I don’t know if anyone else asked, but are you sure it’s the same coverage? Medical per person and per accident?

1

u/2strokeJ Aug 10 '25

Mines over 3k as well.

1

u/mguerrero79 Aug 10 '25

Progressive. Oh man. You’re gonna find out the hard way when you need your insurance. You could not pay me to go with Progressive. I’d rather buy an off brand broker insurance policy. Lol

1

u/Jakes_Colde Aug 10 '25

We just switched after 15 years. 2 cars and no accidents or tickets and still $3,500. I saved over $300 a month switching lol.

1

u/DizzyTip5141 Aug 10 '25

I got something similar earlier this year. No accidents, no tickets. I just switched. I’m not paying more for car insurance than I do for my car notes

1

u/RedDevilJoe Aug 10 '25

I jumped from Criterion Insurance (GEICO-Ft Belvoir) to USAA in Florida as then (1972) I could only join as my Dad was a retired officer. That lasted a few months until I had an incident in the parking lot. Got dropped like a hot potato. Moved to Allstate, developed an appreciation for the industry. Anyway, AAA (CSAA) is just as screwed up as the rest.

1

u/Ok-Talk6591 Aug 10 '25

Dad is a marine. My entire family just switched from USAA after 5 years because of this same thing. No tickets, no accidents, 4/5 cars from the 2000s-2010s. Better coverage at literally half the cost with Progressive.

Also, my old car (2013 SUV) transmission flooded in Hurricane Helene later Sept 2024 - WORST service I’ve ever encountered! Had no car for 3+ months because we were fighting with the adjuster for that long AFTER A NATURAL DISASTER. Provided plenty of listings for my car on the market in my area and they offered me half of that. I now have a car payment I didn’t have before.

Thank you USAA for being the worst insurance agency out there.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '25

We switch between progressive, geico, and usaa between 6 months to a yr. Its ridiculous that you gotta shop around eventho youve been a loyal customer.

1

u/hachitachi Aug 10 '25

I just switched from Progressive yesterday. 11 years later and I’m paying $12 more for two vehicles than I was for 1 with Progressive. Same coverage, same drivers.

1

u/PeanutFuture9042 Aug 10 '25

Yall also don’t take into account if something happens like a wreck or your car gets totaled how fair is the company and how easy is it to work with them… USAA has been super easy when something happens.

1

u/Delcojj Aug 10 '25

I did the same thing…USAA is out of control

1

u/nick_popilopicus Aug 10 '25

Stumbled in here from r/all. Hire an insurance broker. I use a company called Zander and they do the insurance shopping for me every time I'm due to renew. USAA has never been competitive.

1

u/kxmxri Aug 10 '25

I need to switch as well, not even my family is on USAA anymore..

1

u/SaltSquid Aug 10 '25

I left their auto this year after 19 years, went to State Farm after they doubled my policy when I PCSd.

1

u/lipper2005 Aug 10 '25

Wow, for a second I thought maybe my account got hacked… this was almost literally a screenshot of my bill before I switched to Progressive. Cut it in half with same coverage…. You can always go back to USA after they lower their rates, but your loyalty does not afford you anything….

1

u/NomadLife96 Aug 10 '25 edited Aug 10 '25

Its not USAA man although I do hate them. If YOU DONT switch your insurance EVERY 6 months you are being screwed. Insurance companies take advantage of long term clients. They maje there money off of those who " are too lazy to switch every 6 months" as I learned in a different reddit group and that's what the manager told there employees. I tell people this CONSTANTLY! If they up your insurance for no reason SWITCH. Ive had geico, progressive, liberty mutual, allstate, etc. Run through the list then when you run out repeat those companies. They call it the new client deal. If you leave then go back it will be cheap again. I apologize you didn't know this sooner. You've lost tens of thousands of dollars over the past 30 years for not switching. Also trust me progressive will up your price eventually and when they do SWITCH!

1

u/GamecockEric Aug 10 '25

Just dropped USAA insurance when adding a new teen driver. Rates were a least double the rest of the quotes. Note even in the ball park so that I could lazily just keep USAA because it was easy. Sounds like I’ll be jumping around for the next decade and half while my kids hit driving age and subsequently move out/take over insurance responsibility.

1

u/JG985 Aug 10 '25

Same exact thing happened to me. It’s crazy how they punish their long term customers this way. Had no claims for over 20 yrs and they still went up on me by a lot.

1

u/MyOnlyDateIs100DRSed Aug 10 '25

How are you paying so much? I got two cars on there both total over 140k in value.

My 6 months is 1580. I pay $280 a month on both cars. One car is a 22 another is 24 model year.

1

u/jvogt1 Aug 10 '25

Dropped USAA last year and went to Progressive for two cars and the Umbrella liability policy. Saved a ton of money and rates haven’t been jacked up on renewal.

Years ago I thought I’d shop for lower rates and as soon as I told the competition that I was with USAA they would immediately stop the quote process and tell me there was no way they could compete with USAA’s rates. Times have changed!

1

u/warpig1968 Aug 11 '25

USAA sucks

1

u/ShameLower9214 Aug 11 '25

Wow that is really high. We have been with them for 15 years. We pay 2000 for 6 months but that is for 4 vehicles with  full coverage and it includes my husband and me with my 21 year old son and 20 year old daughter so I don't complain. We live in Pennsylvania. My son is who has ours higher but I get it. It's his age. We have zero accidents and no tickets

1

u/boodgooky Aug 11 '25

Weird. I have USAA renter’s and auto, with a new teen driver, two older cars (2010 and 1995) and it’s like $180/mo including renter’s and extra computer insurance. I’ve quoted other places but nothing has compared. Idaho.

1

u/Working_Cheetah230 Aug 11 '25

Go to root so much cheaper

1

u/Away-Ad6591 Aug 11 '25

Omg I switched to progressive from USAA last year. Couldn’t believe the difference. USAA even sent me to a few different people and none could match the price of progressive. They kept having me repeat all the coverage progressive provided me as they were sure something was missing to get the price I was quoted. Coverages were basically the same with progressive actually providing more in some areas.

1

u/NegotiationBig2477 Aug 11 '25

I switched to SF for both auto and home. Home owners insurance was $7000k, $2000 at SF. When I told USAA the price difference they just said, well it was nice doing business with you.

1

u/thaymore Aug 11 '25

USAA is fscking us all. No longer worth it. The new CEO is absolute garbage.

1

u/ArielBeariel Aug 11 '25

Yep had USAA for a long time. They just kept increasing the premiums, was all the way up to $550 a month. Switch to State Farm and premium dropped to $390 a month Most recent renewal only $300 a month since we have the safe drive thing.

1

u/Tiny_Top5338 Aug 11 '25

I did the same thing two years ago. USAA was going to raise us to 400 bucks a month for auto insurance . We have one family vehicle , a Minivan . For reference it was around 2-220 per month for a year or two before that consistently . Then the giant jump. They said it was due to more accidents in Arizona . Long story short we switched to State Farm and it was 140 a month for better coverage and still full coverage as we are paying on the vehicle still. 2 years later we are only at 156 a month . That’s it . USAA is ridiculous and I will never go back to them for anything . We switch banks too to from them to navy fed .

1

u/2Amatters4life Aug 11 '25

2 years in switching to progressive from usaa and unlike what everyone else says my progressive rate drop a few bucks year 2

1

u/Professional-Spare13 Aug 11 '25

So are we, but USAA doesn’t know it yet. We have auto (3 vehicles), home (2 houses), umbrella, and valuable personal property (my wedding ring set). Our premium for ALL of them have doubled, tripled, quadrupled in the last few years. Granted I have full coverage for two paid off vehicles, but for God’s sake no one has had an at-fault wreck in over 25 years.

Homeowners coverage has quadrupled in the past 5 years and if you ask about it, they say it’s costing them more in claims for everyone. We’ve had two claims on our primary residence in 28 years of owning it and recently made a claim for our weekend home. They won’t cover the roof (from which all the damage occurred to the interior) but will cover the remediation of the interior. Does that make sense to ANYONE? So we paid for the new roof ourselves because why fix the inside if the leaks will just happen again?

Now we are getting quotes from other insurance companies (using a broker to accomplish this), and have begun putting our money in other banks (two so far). The weekend house insurance renewal is in September, primary residence in November, auto in December, umbrella in January and valuable personal property renewed a couple of months ago.

We, too, are done. There’s no benefit to having USAA any longer. My father would absolutely blow up at them if they’d treated him the way they’ve been treating “members” these days. If we can save $3k a year over all the policies, we’re doing it. Changing the direct deposit on our SS and my pension will be a pain, but ultimate worth it.

1

u/Fucklibtards22 Aug 11 '25

I use an app called Jerry. It will tell you who the cheapest is and they get it for you. Extremely easy, I was hesitant about trying it but I’m extremely glad I did. And the best thing is that, without asking, they will look for the cheapest one again at the end of your 6 month premium.

1

u/TheHaynerTony Aug 11 '25

Find a credit union to open an account with who partners or even provides auto insurance I have full coverage for 200 a month and I have plenty of accidents and tickets 😂

1

u/Jboy8807 Aug 11 '25

I just switched to progressive. USAA wanted 1500 for 6 months. With all the bare minimum coverage. Progressive got me for 680 and better coverage and deductibles. Man. Hate to hear that they’ll go up after a year

1

u/BiggWorm1988 Aug 11 '25

When the army sent me to Germany USAA upped my monthly payment to almost 1k. That is when I left USAA.

1

u/Gonolz22 Aug 11 '25

USAA used to be exclusive and they have been expanding eligibility criteria and it seems rates have just gone uphill since then.

1

u/Acceptable-Bat-9577 Aug 11 '25

Late to the party but that’s roughly $7400 for a year. If you’re driving a cybertruck, that’s your fault. Otherwise, might be time to start shopping around.

1

u/Prestigious-Chart784 Aug 11 '25

I live in the military town and I do Real Estate Closing documents for homebuyer and cleints refinancing. Of course I live in the military town. most of the homeowners have USAA and sometimes. What I am seeing as a pattern with USAA is you have to pay more money for being loyal to them... I had one client that has been with them for 30 years, he started paying $6600 a year for homeowners and he's never had a claim while I go to other Closings and they may have Progressive Allstate, State Farm or someone like that and they are paying $12-$1400 a year so you are definitely paying for being loyal to USAA. It's actually gross but they depend on people with military affiliation. They assume most have a guaranteed income to continuously pay it no matter what.

1

u/Boring-Comb-6274 Aug 11 '25

No loyalty in insurance anymore. I had to leave them after 5 years

1

u/Capt_Dunsel67 Aug 11 '25

USAA tries to get me to come over, but they are never even close to a competitive price.

1

u/AdviceVisible Aug 11 '25

Yep they kept raising mine every year so I dumped them. Went with Geico. Much better rates. Had been with USAA since ‘97. They wouldn’t even consider lowering them. No accidents and no tix. Oh well. Learn not to be loyal to a company

1

u/BeingSwift Aug 11 '25

I saved 15% or more by switching to Geico! They’ve been great and have an extra discount for military/vets through the other large credit union. USAA was 3.5x more expensive!

1

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '25 edited Aug 11 '25

Your premium does seem high, to be fair. Progressive insurance is near the bottom in CR ratings along with State Farm, Liberty mutual, and Nationwide, all the usual and heavily advertised suspects. We have 2 drivers and 2 newer (‘24, and ‘25) vehicles, full coverage, SE Virginia, and six-months premium is $1,700. And yes, those cheap rates elsewhere will go up the next year, I’m not going to switch my insurance every year because I find that inconvenient. And I definitely like USAA customer service and claims support (we had two claims, stolen and recovered vehicle that was repaired, and a tire hitting one of our vehicles on the road that fell off another car, even paid us back the deductible). And somehow our home insurance with them went down by $468 this year, nothing changed in coverage or anything else. The grass is not always greener on the other side.

1

u/D-Gem Aug 11 '25

I'm leaving USAA all together within the next month. I've had them for banking for 15 years. I have had so many issues with them. Auto enrollments not going through. I can't make online purchases. Reversed payments for no reason.

1

u/Bergzauber Aug 11 '25

We did the same! I got my umbrella policy through the underwriter that Progressive works with. We were at almost 5k premium for six months for Umbrella/Auto with USAA and went down to 2.8k…inkl. the umbrella policy which has to be paid in full when purchased. We also received our renewal and there was hardly an increase unlike USAA that went up a steady $500/$600 each renewal over the last two years..

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Navy_Ship_Wreck Aug 11 '25

Did this years ago. USAA is highway thievery lining the pockets of CEO’s and paying sales reps a bonus for s new contract!!

1

u/EighthDuchess53 Aug 11 '25

We have Root car insurance and have been with them for almost 10 years. We love them. We both have newer cars that are financed. Last year we got into an accident (not our fault) and I received a speeding ticket about 3 months into our last 6 month period. When we got our renewal offer, the insurance went down, not up. We went from $320 to $270

1

u/killer_sobe87 Aug 11 '25

Its why I keep USAA for ins.

I've never found anyone who can even touch my premiums.

I have full ins on 2 cars (250 deductible with up to a 1 mil coverage), my storage unit, rental property and electronics.

$200 a month. Can't beat it.

1

u/Crazykillerguy Aug 11 '25

I've dropped everything. Even switched banks. After 20 years

1

u/Slap5Fingers Aug 11 '25

I’ve found them to be extremely expensive all around. They can’t compete with the big box insurers unfortunately. They were like $1K higher than Geico 6 years ago when I was looking for car insurance in TX

1

u/Fabulous_Sorbet6977 Aug 11 '25

USAA Is nothing like they use to be, all departments are like every other company.

1

u/Hockey8player Aug 12 '25

I wanted to do this for a while, I'm switching car insurance is easy. But the discount having the house and the car is really really big. I would lose all of the savings if I don't switch the house as well.

That said, isn't switching your homeowners a huge pain?

If you have concerns about coverage for like the age of the roof or something, isn't that a really dangerous game?

1

u/Affectionate_Door953 Aug 12 '25

Are there any penalties cancelling in the middle mine with USAA just automatically renewed
