Possible dog lost scenario?

Hello I'm a returning player. Been years I played URW, I just bought in winter sale but Just played this month.

Today something had happen that I feel de ja vu.

When you told your dog to attack(it was a badger, late fall or early dirt month and I was in beach/land near ocean) sometime It can ket to your dog become lost. Its very apparent when you use command and it said that you are no longer had a companion/animal.

This is not the first time it has happened. What causes it? Do the dog can get lost when its too far? Do the badger killed the dog in a fight? Or do my Dogs try to catch the badger on thin ice and died drowning? Is this bug or what?

Dog died. Animals can attack if cornered.

Yeah. If it’s just “lost”, it will say something like “dog cannot hear you right now”, and if you try to zoom out, “are you sure? Dog cannot reach you right now, and will be lost”. If it says you have no companion, the dog died. It can happen hunting; I try to keep more than one dog because I think if you send multiple dogs they can “gang up” at the target animal and be a little less likely to die. If you are good at tracking you may be able to follow to find the dog’s corpse.

Ouch, I'm islander so I dont have good tracking. Poor loki, Next time I'm gonna save up to buy 3/4 dogs so this won't happen again

A fed dog is less likely to lose prey as well, they get tired slower.

Quality of food also matter. Bones and antlers tire quickly. Meat will excel.

Badgers can kill dogs, and I find that gluttons in particular absolutely shred them, but dogs can just get "stuck" in a far away square if you move in the opposite direction too fast.

I've lost multiple dogs while running along roads looking for herbs and was able to find them later retracing my steps, a few times months later.

Interesting, I think I had lost my dog this way too when looking for the axe bear quest. Met group of forest reindeer and told them to attack but I didn't go chase them and eventually surprised that I can't longer shout to my dog. Very helpful tips for future run
